A border-less Africa may no longer be just a pipe dream. According to the African Union’s 2063 Agenda, there will be a single African Union passport that permits freedom of movement and shared development among African nations. But is a border-less Africa a good or a bad thing? And why has it taken so long to implement the single African passport policy? Beatrice Marshall and her panel of experts delve into this debate on this episode, of Talk Africa!

@Sammy A. In this world those types will never go away, your going to need a strong united military. But I must agree, if you provide young men and women with jobs and opportunities you will eliminate those home grown terror groups. Of course, there is also cultural evil, as seen in the southern racist groups of the US. Those will always be around, and a strong professional, well paid military can dismantle those groups.

@@akadopeboi I was just reading into Costa Rica on how they abolished their military since 1948 and haven't had a civil war since, you would think that with the cultural evils in many countries that they would have a more permanent standing army. But overall I agree with more investment into work for citizens and some type of law enforcement to deter hate groups.

Nkrumah did NOT get it right. Nkhrumah has been "misled by a false thesis which said that Afro-Arab continental unity, rather than Black power, was the key to solving the many problems of the Black race." Could this belief being held by Nkhrumah be the reason behind him marrying a white arab and NOT a black woman from Ghana ??? What can you do with a battery that has no POWER ??? Is it possible for a disadvantaged people to transform their environment without POWER ??? Should black afrikans form a union with those who have been our enemies and oppressors (white arabs in north afrika). How are black people treated in afrikan countries that are dominated by white arabs (Libya, Tunisia, Egypt etc) and arabized afrikans (North Sudan etc) ? " Why did Sudan break up into TWO nations ??? "In a world of wolves one should go armed, and one of the most powerful weapon within the reach of Afrikans is the practice of RACE FIRST in all parts of the world." (Marcus Garvey)

@@tylancoleman2862 no. Africa should be one nation. Of course, the countries will turn into provinces and the provinces will have some autonomy but will overall be under the power of a continent-wide national government. We could control the continent with a huge military and it would be justified because Africa is so large will become the largest country when it unites. A United Africa should be under a monarchy, not democracy since democracy won't work since the majority of our Africans are uneducated.

@Forward To The Past I'm a European and the Schengen Area is a blessing. We don't need borders within our union. The EU is an example for the rest of the world to follow. The AU needs to take notes. European countries only became superpowers because we looked outside of our borders. But when we looked within our continental borders we realised that we shouldn't have conquered the earth. We should have cooperated with each other from the start.

Yes, I love it...now Africa is truly on the right path..the open borders policy will boost the local economy's in every African country in their area of strengths. It will also help slowly merge the African countries into one country. Which is good because it creates one market; less competition among each other, and global growth. For years this is a vision many African-Americans from the united states, Brazil, the Caribbean Islands, and Canada has been sharing especially the United States.

Not quite true. Nkrumah was of the opinion that African Unity would be achieved through political union first and economic union would follow. Nyerere, Mboya and some others considered that approach to be unrealistic. They believed that African Union could only be realistically achieved through economic union first. In particular they believed that the first step was to establish regional economic trading blocks, then later merge the blocks into one economic block with free movement of people, goods and services and complete removal of trading barriers. The path Africa is adopting is closer to Nyerere school of thought rather than Nkrumah's.

Nkrumah, in all honesty, was his own worst enemy. He had no skills for diplomacy whatsoever and routinely insulted his peers in other African nations. Perhaps they might have resisted his ideas anyways, but he did a terrible job at bringing Africans together. Given that he would then become a cruel authoritarian leader in subsequent years, you have to wonder if it was always his great ego that stood in the way of his pan-African goal.

The only people I say should be allowed back in freely are those of the African diaspora, like the African Americans, African Caribbeans, and those who are first, second, and third generation African in any country etc... This bettering Africa project needs to be grassrooted by Africans who are interested in African prosperity. Maybe investors from big project and tech companies should be the only outsiders allowed in freely because they are trying to make a contribution and not just a profit.

I agree Africa should first unite regionally with open borders and with a regional currency. These regions should be divided into western, eastern, and southern divisions. Africa should represent herself with the three regional heads to the United Nations, and the European Union, and any union or country asking to do business with Africa. These false borders drawn by Europeans allows corruption in its most horrific forms. Regional governments will be able to seriously curb illicit currency flows hampering Africa's development. For example why does Guinea not profit from its Bauxite? Or Zambia who is not profiting from it massive copper wealth? Or DRC not profit from its cobalt, uranium, gold, oil...etc? Our so-called colonial drawn borders sell Africa's mineral for the price of onions. While the Nordic countries (Finland) receives 70% from all of its oil directly benefiting its citizens; while most African countries receive as little as 2% in revenues and most of that is channeled to corrupt politicians imitating western democracies. So exactly which countries are benefiting when Sub-Saharan African countries contain the majority of the worlds resources and we have the lowest HDI (human development index); those opposed to unifying ask yourself where does your perspective country lie on the HDI? And, more importantly what ideas do you have to increase our human development? Colonial bordered countries only benefit the colonizers. There will be extreme difficulties in unifying but in order to advance sacrifice cannot be substituted for religious promises. Our currencies are decimated continent wide with large swings from country to country. How is it that the worlds 5th largest country by population (Nigeria) currency is traded 250 -300 : 1 USD. Or, CAF counties are 900 : 1 USD. This is ridiculous. If Africa does not take bold steps today when problems are manageable then what will we do when the population doubles in the next 20 -30 years, the future of Africa could be very volatile if corrections are not made now.

Moreover, leaving Congolese (DRC) to be killed like flyers by rebels supported by our neighbours. Ibanda Tembi you are so correct my friend. African leaders view their population as if they were burdens, something that they must contend with but despise. Their main objective is to enrich themselves along with their western counterparts. Africa needs major job creation to battle the oncoming population boom. The only continent with the youngest population is being systematically under-educated, and depopulated. By redrawing borders population and resources can be evenly distributed. But instead our borders serve the interest of ex-colonizers. What's needed is something Africans and the West fear most - a Shakazulu in his younger years. Let us not keep pretending the West will accept us; until each African the world over is ready to sacrifice time, energy, and life; then the hard work of nation-building will take a back seat.

That why to start they should border with other countries until we iron out all the kinks... They had borders, empires, buffer zones, city states, caliphate's, emirates, oligarchies, duogarchies, the lot. They even had political systems that never existed in Eurasia and thus don't have names or references in modern literature. Africa has always been divided because of it's ethnic and climactic diversity.

You do not want open borders. Borders are very important to maintain security, stability and control over your country's economy. In Europe they had to start building fences to be able to control the influx of migrants. You loose control, and riots and maybe civil wars will be the result. For trade you can do bilateral or trilateral trade agreements.

First start regionally. East African Federation(made up of EAC), West African Federation(very large -Nigeria, Liberia,Senegal, Ghana etc,) and South African Federation(South Africa Namibia Botswana Mozambique etc) after 10 to 20 years of stable regional Federation then we can begin to combine them. One Passport, One Flag, One Currency, 1 or 2 languages(Swahili and some other language - maybe Amharic) North Africa has sadly been stolen thousands of years ago so they should be left out of the plans for now. Ethiopia, being the Lion of Africa, should probably host our Capitol city.

The Diaspora will play a KEY role in this as they have the technical knowledge to execute many of the things we want to do. Major incentives should be given to them to return as i am sure many of them have grown comfortable with their lifestyles in the West. Once progress is tangible, incentives to return and help the motherland will be needed less. University exchange programs should be made with the prestigious/respected Historically Black Colleges in America(Howard University etc) to build our expertise here and assist with creating our own elite university system around Africa. Economics and governance should model Singapore/Mainland China which places emphasis on state ownership of crucial industries. i.e. Banking(initially) Steel production, oil, minerals, certain manufacturer sectors, etc...any business wishing to enter these sectors must enter into a partnership with our state owned entity(where we control the majority) Governance,- I'm in favor of one party rule initially. Sometimes democracy as practiced in the West can really slow down progress. In China, the right to a job with good enough wages to feed your family weighs more then most other freedoms the West trumpets. Media - There should be an African version of CCTV/BBC....our news should be told and controlled by our people though i applaud CCTV for employing many Africans within the continent.
