In this talk given at Paideia's Living Latin in NYC 2024, I present my observation that technological progress is not inevitable, exhorting those of us who know and appreciate ancient literature and history, and therefore know how easy it is for a civilization to stagnate and collapse, to teach what we know to anyone who is willing, including and especially the engineers, the doctors, the statesmen, the scientists of the world who, inspired by the accomplishments of the past, might right along with us carry on the patrimony of classical literature and history, for they are the very people in a position to craft our best future.

I have never studied Latin as a language, but in my English classes as a boy, they hammered us time and time again with Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. It took a bit to adjust to the rhythm of the language, but as I adjusted I was surprised how much I could understand just from being taught those roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Very interesting talk, thank you!

I clicked on this video on a calm Saturday evening to hear someone speak Latin and work on my translating. But that was a really moving speech. In the media, there's this sense of fear at the inevitability of the collapse of the current world order, fear that the end may be close. This kind of helped me feel a bit better about that. Thanks for that.

Always great to hear stuff like this👍. In my secondary school we got Latin and ancient Greek courses as a standard. It wasn't thought at a very high level, rather intermediate. I can still folow the talk though😂

Beautifully done, although I'm pretty sure we figured out the secret of Roman self-repairing concrete a few years ago, pretty recently but still.
@ScorpioMartianus
@ScorpioMartianus 13 күн бұрын
That’s exactly right! That’s why it was the first item on the list. If it wasn’t clear in my commentary, I meant that we finally understand this list of things - and yet the subtle perfection of Roman concrete, or at least its precise formula, has yet to be 100% understood. I think we’ll get there one day.

You're an inspiration. You said in a comment that you wrote down the full familia romana and that you then were able to read latin. But that meant slightly above level of familia romana right? Or did that mean being able to read classical authors?

Salvē Lūcī, love your work! Was having some fun with your Ranieri's Latin Pronunciation Chronology while reading Augustine (assuming 400AD) and questions started to pop up! Maybe you updated the chart many times by now? (Found it on Reddit and it says 2019): 1. quia superbīs resistis -> [k(i)a su'perbi re'se:ste]? 2. prius -> [pre:o]? 3. laudābilis -> [lo'da:bile] or [lo'da:bele]? Laudābilis, laudābile, laudābilem, laudabilēs all get pronounced the same way, right? 4. numerus -> ['noːmero], right? But what about Sardinian/Southern-Italian numeru? Was the u a later innovation from the [oː]? 5. circumferēns -> [t͡ʃirku:feres]? 6. aut -> [o:t] or already [o:] without the t? 7. By 400 AD the chart goes full palatalization-mode with all the lovely ʃ, d͡ʒ, t͡ʃ etc.. except for [s̠c] in front of e and i. [s̠c] - got me wondering why? Man, the pronunciation becomes tough on the inflections and conjugations with all those word final -s dropping. Or would Augustine have preserved some singular/plural distinction? Also, it's funny how the word final -s becomes a sign of a participle ( = [-es]) , rather than of the second person ending ;). Would love to know your thoughts! Sorry if it's an old chart!
