Can you do a slow troll with these flies

Yes you certainly could although we most often fish them beneath a strike indicator. Cheers Phil

I caught your video on you tube replay. Enjoyed it very much. Not any trout in my local waters here without some traveling, However, the fishes we do have should tear these up pretty good. Learned something new (two new ties), which I thank you both for.

Hi Eric, Thanks for the kind words regarding my video. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed it. I have done well with micro leeches such as these for other fish too including bass and panfish. Cheers, Phil

Thanks Phil, Jordan too, great info on ice off fish location, presentations, and food items. That M&M is awesome, UV resin really opened up new tying techniques for all sorts of patterns. I'm going to tie that on scud and jig hooks for fly fishing in general, also on lead head jigs for spin fishing for walleye and other warm water fish. Thanks again!

Thanks Joe, glad to hear you enjoyed our live tying event. We will be doing more of these in the future. Yes, you can use this resin technique for a variety of flies and materials. Cheers, Phil

I learned a lot last year float tube fishing. I really had to discipline myself and slow down my retrieve and have some very long pauses when ice went off. Hopefully there won't be much winter kill in our local waters.
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
I am hoping the same for my local water too. The Ice should be leaving our lakes anytime now. Yes right after ice off the water is still very cool, ok cold :). Retrieves have to be slow or sometimes static. That's why indicator presentations are so popular. Cheers, Phil

Tungsten beads are unnecessarily and disgustingly expensive...I primarily fish moving water so I use them, but I buy them from junk amazon sellers for like 15 bucks for 100. Not spending 10 bucks for 25. If I need to get down faster I put some split shot on. Not everything should have a bead either.
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing Жыл бұрын
Yes, tungsten beads are more costly than brass beads. I use brass beads most often, but tungsten beads are a must for my balanced flies. I actually only use beads on some 25% of my patterns, such as chironomids, leeches, and some nymphs. Most of my patterns are unweighted or actually tied using buoyant materials such as foam. I prefer to let my fly line present the fly at the right depth if possible. When using strike indicator presentation then, we use bead head patterns. This presentation was focused on ice-off patterns. At this time, fish in lakes are in the shallows as that is where the most oxygen is. Water temperatures are cold, so fish doing move much as their metabolism is still slow. As a result, indicator presentation using bead head patterns works best. Cheers, Phil

Jordan do you use your rotary vise in tying this type of fly? I normally use mine to speed up and do a better job in my tying. Clark Stevens
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing2 жыл бұрын
Hi Clark, thanks for taking the time to comment. I believe Jordan often uses the rotary features of his vise when tying this and other types of flies. When filming a tying video we usually keep the vise stationary so it stays in frame and in focus. Cheers, Phil

You are tying flies with bright colored beads. are these more productive than standard silver or gold beads?
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes they are other times not so much. I often have a blend of flies with fluorescent beads and more somber copper or black nickel beads too. Cheers, Phil

The wire wrap isnt worth it in my opinion. I tie these marabou leeches with no wire and i use flashabou and crystal flash just one strip each in the tail. I feel the wire dampens the body too much and makes the body less full. Never thought of using the ostrich herl i still prefer marabou right through. Ill have to get some ostrich herl in black
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
My M&M Leech uses ostrich herl, not marabou. I use the wire for additional reinforcement as the ostrich herl isn't the most durable of materials but it is easier to wrap through the herl than marabou. The finer nature of ostrich herl also allows the Mirage Opal Mylar body to shine through which provides an attractive flash that the fish seem to love. Cheers, Phil

@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing thats a new pattern for me. The wire would work better with the ostrich herl. I will have to pick some up in black
