Talk to Al Jazeera - Mmusi Maimane: 'Fighting a system, not a race'

He rose quickly from political obscurity, emerging first as a mayoral candidate in Johannesburg and soon after becoming leader of South Africa's main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), in 2015.
Mmusi Maimane thinks he has got the answers to South Africa's problems. At a time of economic and political turmoil, the ruling African National Congress (ANC), he says, is focused less on the needs of the people, and more on the enrichment of its ruling elite.
When he called for a vote in parliament recently to impeach President Jacob Zuma for breaching the constitution, Maimane struck a heavy blow in an opposition campaign to overtake the party that he accuses of betraying the ideals of Nelson Mandela.
But the vote failed and the ANC is fighting back, using the rhetoric of race to discredit Maimane. They call him a sellout, a puppet of the rich, the black face of a white party.
"The true test was whether or not the ANC would defend the constitution or defend Jacob Zuma. I found that as the leader of the opposition it was important to put that test before them. When they took the test and made the decision to defend Jacob Zuma it made us realise, and it made South Africans realise, that project Zuma is not an anomaly to the ANC, it is the ANC itself," says Maimane.
The politician believes that "one of the things the ANC has departed from is the basic freedom that is the freedom of association. They fail to recognise the fact that it is possible that black South Africans can join any party that they so choose, they have departed from that. The second thing the ANC has departed from is what I believe the generation on 1956 that was led by President Nelson Mandela that said that they were fighting a system not a race. And if you are fighting a system you recognise the fact that black and white can join together to fight a system that oppresses black people even though the same white people were benefitting they can join arms with black people and fight against it.... I am not building a party that is black. I am building a party for all South Africans regardless of race who recognise the fact that their fundamental job is to fight for the marginalised who in this instance are black."
Maimane points to his party's successful record in governing the western Cape province, with Cape Town, the jewel, at its heart. With local elections due next year, he believes the Democratic Alliance will make its mark in the country's other big cities as well.
But in the townships outside Cape Town the poor are getting poorer, much as they are everywhere else in South Africa. What does Mmusi Maimane have to offer them? Talk to Al Jazeera spoke to him in Cape Town about the ANC, the DA, Jacob Zuma, and his vision for the country.

Don't disagree with you completely, but English being one of the official South African languages should count for something. Which of the many countries you listed above have English as an official language? Don't believe any. English is the fallback language for international travel and therefore our representatives on international travel should be presentable when speaking English. Growing up in South Africa it is one of the compulsory languages in school and university. But of course we all know his academic record.

+DesertFox Again, not basing your arguments on facts. In Zimbabwe the black tobacco farmers outproduced former white farmers in a very short space of time. Currently there is a push to compensate white farmers for developments and infrastructure on their former lands, not an invitation to bring them all back; it is something i believe is fair and moral but not to be taken as another failure by Zimbabweans. The economic problems in Zimbabwe are a result of no access to finance/lines of credit like the rest of the world to a greater degree, and of government incompetence on a lesser level. Nobody supports handouts to irresponsible people, that is common sense; but to conclude that the idea of wealth redistribution equals handouts to irresponsible individuals is unintelligent!

Responding to the young person's observation that Cape Town is divided between the haves and have nots by stating that he/she has a better chance of getting a job or education says a lot about what DA stands for. The best hope for any young black person in Cape Town is to be lucky enough to be an employee of the haves but never to be one of the haves. Investing in poor black children getting 'the best education' in the western cape compared to that of the rest of the country's poor black kids is like saying to a homeless person; 'the garbage you are eating from my bin is better than the garbage the other homeless guy is eating so thank me'. How about redistributing wealth so nobody eats garbage; how about that for a thank you?

If I were to interview a person or party campaigning for presidency in my country, I would pose similar questions with even more diligence and interrogate the candidate/s. It is perhaps the same level of interrogation judges go through when applying for office. The office of the presidency is the highest in the land, it is earned and not given.

There is a growing perception that the judiciary trumps everything, even morals. There is a protection of wealth and capital in this country that is the root of much evil; that is where the judiciary has drawn a line in the sand. The constitution shows its teeth when dealing with one side (easy targets such as an incompetent president) but never against the big wealth and the big capital machine that, as well documented facts reveal, is what is causing so much strife and a negative impact on the economic and social growth of South Africa. Mmusi, you have quiet an excellent unique political vision different from any other political party in SA. The good things is that DA is not denying the inequality which is the basis of political ideologies shared by political movement like the EFF to the fact that they entrench in their cardinal pillars to take over sources of ownership without compensation. obviously this should be taken from minority whites who own that at the moment to the detriment of majority blacks. How will you achieve eradication of inequality without harming your white support base?

Like he said, by properly educating the impoverished, so they can compete with their own skills, knowledge and merits, rather than needing the government to impose racist quota systems. You create an equal playing field, and then let the players play. In this way you empower black people to compete with white people on equal footing, ensuring both improvement of black people by their own power and effort, and the freedom of the individual, and the market. This is a long term project, but it is the only way to properly address the problems, rather than just pasting a plaster over the wound and letting it fester underneath (which is what the ANC has been doing). In essence, you build up the impoverished to the standards and levels of the privileged, rather than tearing the privileged down to the standards and levels of the impoverished.

The DA are essentially classical liberal, whilst the ANC are socialist, and the EFF are communist. For context: Classical Liberalism is the value of individualism (which naturally leads to a rejection of all collectivist ideas, such as racial profiling or race level characterisation, and identity politics), individual freedom (such as property rights, freedom of expression, freedom of association, etc.), voluntary participation in economics and service delivery (i.e. market based economics, which naturally limits government size), whilst acknowledging that you do need at least basic governance to protect this system and ensure it's continued functioning and growth.

CLs (Classical Liberals) advocate individuality; Progressives (henceforth Progs) advocate identity politics (which is inherently collectivist). 2. CLs advocate individual freedoms above all else; Progs advocate social justice at the expense of the individual. 3. +XZDrake nobody will ever be perfect as a president, but mbeki managed to hold the South African economy in a very good position the South African economy has never been at what it was under mbeki since he came out of office. He understood the true meaning of politics. Another thing you have to understand is it was not necessarily about blaming the boers but mbeki came in 4 years after the end of apartheid. So the effects of the regime were still effecting the country he had ground to stand on. All in all I feel that he was a decent president.

He said he celebrates his economic achievements. It's possible to recognise and celebrate a certain achievement or quality of a person, without liking or endorsing their entire character. I very much admire Adolf Hitler's public speaking ability, but I detest pretty much everything else about him and what he's done. Just because I admire that one bit about him, doesn't mean I'm all for everything he stood for. I'm inclined to giving Mmusi the benefit of the doubt, since I highly doubt that his 'celebration' of Bill Clinton (for his economics, as he said himself) is an endorsement of his character, conduct, and policies as a whole.
