At my parents house we used to burn brush fires every year with huge bonfires with no push back from our surrounding neighbors. Until one year where someone did happen to let us know that the smoke was bothersome and was wafting through their windows. We have since reduced the size to deal w/ that, but at the time we never once cared what the effect was on anyone else around us. In seeking our "happiness" or our "goals" we were indifferent asto who it effected. Kenneth was absolutely right on this point.

Actually belief itself is not a disorder. We believe in lots of things and then find out they were false. Fairies, leprechauns, Santa, gods! It's when those beliefs harm themselves or others. For instance generally any theistic belief is harmful. Thus harm must be the issue, not belief. For instance informing someone their belief is harmful and they continue to do it! Is belief in fairies harmful? I'd say no for people (kids) still to learn sceptism. However if fairy belief causes harm, then clearly that harm should be stopped. It's an equivocation fallacy to say: God belief (generally always bad ) causes harm THEREFORE belief in Santa is wrong. When no harm for those kids or others is coming from it (as long as they eventually learn their belief was false). Is it lying? Oddly not all lies are harmful to yourself and others. Lying is not punishable under good intentions. It's only the harm that it may cause themselves or others.

What about sceptism? Endeavouring to remove (or question really) false beliefs is not harmful. Although any harm it's presently causing must be stopped. Capitalisation The reason why a day is set aside (other than doing everyday or no days) is to make it a psychologically special day to hope for. If we have resources available, then good idea to use them. As long as it doesn't cause harm.

There is nothing to recover from as it's not an illness. After a few weeks of conversations, I finally saw reason. Belief is not a disorder, true or false. The only reason it is an option to tell the kid Santa isn't real is because they lies were told already. Odds are as a parent you were part of the lie if not the origin. The silly thing is it is utterly unnecessary just like religion. The kid would have loved the stories and the holidays just as much without the deception as evidenced by still enjoying things after the revelation of the truth.

Never having kids, I'd imagine it's very difficult to avoid ~all~ white lies... However, I wouldn't have lied to my child about Santa Claus. Christmas can still be magical for children without a Santa Claus. On the other hand, I'm sure I'd screw up and tell them a white lie while I'm in the midst of some minor emergency or whatever. But I'd certainly do my very best to avoid lying to them. The Santa Claus thing (along with the bunny and the fairy) was one of the things I still kinda hold against my parents for telling me when I was young. It's hard to see them the same after learning the truth.

There are many examples of people achieving forgiveness directly with repentance only, including a whole city of gentiles in the book of Jonah. Christianity has 2 things against it.
