True Stories was dyn-o-mite. Nobody got it when it came out. Nobody. Byrne is a flippin genius. He may not be the greatest artist to work with on a project (like Peter Gabriel), but they are both musical and lyrical geniuses. I think I was one of the only people in my high school who dug Talking Heads. My friends who I grew up with (and who are now in our late 50's) still don't get why I'm such a fan.

I'll be 40 in a couple of months... my parents used to play some TH stuff growing up, but never deeper cuts, always the same hand full of "Top 40" hits.... I now feel like I've been robbed of this audio and visual experience for a large chunk of my life now.... this album lives on repeat for now....

by the 1980s advertising and branding had gotten really good. How they try to emotionally manipulate you had gotten good too. This is song is prophetic and full of a doomy, gloomy outlook on our blatant consumerism. It reminds me of Devo's "Beautiful World". Seems so benign and sunny. It's not. This song is a warning. The video is PERFECT at broadcasting its true meaning to anyone wanting to understand what's really going on. On the musical side though, this song just infects my ears and I GET ADDICTED. I could play this song dozens of times per day and have over the years many, many times. That riff IS OUTMATCHED NOWHERE.

Masterful video, wonderfully done, loaded with obvious images of crass commercialism - and a killer song that's instantly likeable - and yet it is still just a silly love song - as all the best songs mostly are! For the opposite sentiment, go see Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" - another song of pure genius - just as crass as this one, and yet darker in tone. Love them both!

The remastering does an excellent (and much needed!) job of removing any nostalgia there might be for that era's commercial culture. The Talking Heads always created music that was about 10 years ahead of its time, and the advertisements, "stripped" of their analog fuzziness seem like the sort of commercials we could see at any time in the post-modern world.

Interesting story about the time I met David Byrne. It was 1996 and I was living in NYC. I worked at a small health food store in Greenwich Village called "Healthy Pleasures". One day I am tending to the deli/ bakery section and a rather ordinary looking, unassuming man walks up to the counter and in a soft friendly voice asks if we carry Kalamata Olive Bread. I replied that we did and it was when I got the bread for him that I realized it was David Byrne! The guy was just so polite and ordinary looking I hadn't even recognized him at first. He paid in cash and thanked me and left. I wanted to say something like " I love your band" or something lame like that, but I held my tongue as I sis not want to draw attention to him or make him feel uncomfortable. I worked at that place for about two years and numerous celebrities came in there such as Charleton Heston, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Al Pacino. I heard even Robert DeNiro was in there, but I wasn't working at the time. Great memories!
