The role of MEWShop in preparing editing students is discussed, focusing on the multifaceted skills required beyond technical proficiency. Jamie Hitchings offers guidance to aspiring documentary filmmakers, emphasizing authenticity, perseverance, and problem-solving skills. The challenges of acquiring music rights and balancing self-funding with external funding for passion projects are explored, with a specific focus on Jamie's film, "Catching Air." The episode provides valuable insights into the intricacies of the documentary filmmaking process.
A film-obsessed nerd since as far back as she can remember, it's no wonder that Jamie Hitchings became a filmmaker. Specifically, she's a post-production specialist whose work reflects an interest in technology and asks tough questions about how it affects humanity. Hitchings teaches college-level post-production and film history and is also a freelance editor for the United Nations. She is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute and completed her Masters at NYU. Her first feature-length documentary "Catching Air" was born out of a strong desire to create a story from something that most people are not familiar with. Through this documentary, Hitchings hopes to not just to spread knowledge and dispel myths about the fringe creative world of international air guitar, but also to inspire others to explore thing that lie just outside of their own daily routines.
