I've been wanting to make this video for a long time and I must state clearly from the outset this is not a personal attack on anyone who thinks they are doing the right thing by advising new/returning modellers that they should get a Airfix/Revell/Italeri 1/72 as their first aircraft kit.
Its just bad advice!
There's no need to go down that wretched road when there's perfectly capable kits available from Tamiya's "old" catalog of single engine WW2 fighters in 1/48 scale - namely anything in the 61032 to 61097 range.
Shoutout to a bunch of folks at the Scale Model Critique Group (SMCG) on Facebook who contributed to a lot of the discussion here. / scalemodelerscg

If you want a closer look at my recommended Tamiya range, here's the online Tamiya catalog - www.tamiya.com/english/products/list/48plane/kit61001.htm remember to start looking from 61032 onwards to 61097. Below that are Tamiya's earlier, okayish works (equivalent to 2000s Airfix) while beyond that are a lot of jets, more complex and larger aircraft subjects that are best suited for your 3rd or 4th kit. If there's enough interest, I'll do a special step by step video building that Spitfire Mark V using the starting - but high quality - tools and materials I recommend (and use myself). Remember there's more than hobby - what you do and are interested in will differ from others and that's perfectly fine - I continue to say and will always say there's nothing wrong with building older kits (I have some myself!) and none of this is personal...so let's keep the comments that way too. Cheers, Chris

I am a 45yr old returning modeler. I just by luck, before watching this video, built a Tamiya P51 (61040) as my first model in over well over 20 years. I had a great time building it. Now I am tackling a 1/48 scale Italeri F-14. It's driving me crazy. I'm very glad I started with the Tamiya kit. It was easy to put together, with no fit issues. If I had started with the Italeri kit, I might have quit the hobby before I started. Thank you. This video is definitely on point.

Thanks Stephen - consider chucking the Italeri F-14 and grab a new tool Academy 1/72 F-14A. Goes together extremely well, just like the Tamiya 1/48 version, but at one third the price. Cheers, Chris

Great advice, well presented. Some of the most discouraging of FB commenters will say things like: "Are you a modeler, or just an assembler? If you spend all your time choosing only good-fitting kits, you are nothing but an assembler. You can only become a modeler by working on the older, ill-fitting kits and making them look good." Your commentary is a breath of fresh air!
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels 3 жыл бұрын
My instant reply to that is - are you a scratchbuilder? If not, you obviously bought a kit with parts already to be ASSEMBLED. Just because you bought a kit with parts that need more fettling, still makes you an ASSEMBLER. Thanks for the comment Ian!

This was so refreshing to hear. I am 66 and have been modeling since I was 10 and have had my fill of ill-fitting kits. Sometimes it cannot be helped if the subject is not a popular one and your choices are limited. I love a good fitting, well-engineered kit and there is no need for me to prove to anyone that I can build either type, good fit or bad. It's nobody's business but mine. The 1/48 Tamiya kits mentioned here are little gems and a great way to hone your modeling skills without getting discouraged. All the basics to building a not-so-good fitting kit also apply to well-engineered kits like these, just to a lesser degree. You still have to make the seams disappear - it just requires less work. Thank you so much for posting this video. We need to keep this hobby growing.

I'm 64 and have started up again, building and painting and taking little baby steps. For me, it's more of the subject of the model, its scale and how much fun I can have getting a decent finished reslut on my shelf. I have noticed a huge advancement in the level of graphics and lucidity in some of the modern kit manufacturers' instructions. Well-engineered sprues coupled to clever constructional solutions can really raise the eyebrows and give a smile while in the building stage. Fit, elegance and smoothness of construction, even during the more complicated stages, is a joy to experience. I know that I will not, at this stage in their game, be able to produce anywhere near the finished results many of you KZbinrs seem to achieve. But I do use your channels for inspiration and encouragement. One thing that does separate my current view of the hobby from the younger "M.E." is patience. I do not have to manically burn through a build in one sitting any more. My hobby has become a slow burner these days - and has turned into a much better and more rewarding hobby for this reason.

Welcome back to the hobby - my only piece of advice and its seems you're on the right track anyway - is don't compare your output with KZbinrs etc. A lot of these folk do this full time and have had the time and energy to put into practice that for the majority of us is only a part time passion. Enjoy the process and yes you're quite right about patience! Cheers Chris

Thanks Chris! Just a word from me about what I'm into, so to speak. I am simply potty about WWII aircraft. I bought a 1:72 mkII Spit from Revell, to go with an Italeri BF 109 F that I have had in a cupboard for 7 years. Both are now built and brush-painted. I purchased an airbrush and compressor and plan on getting stuck in on a Tamiya 1:48 Corsair with tug and an Airfix 1:72 Bristol Beaufighter. I even have a Jas Gripen 1:72 from Italeri, but as I am not so fond of jets (or Italeri) 🙃 it may have to wait until I am in the mood.

I hoped most would understand that term! The other thing that is great about them is knowing going in that you are going to have a pleasant experience steels you up to do additional things - like superdetail the cockpit, or go to town on the paint job. Your "mojo meter" remains near full throughout the experience! I recently built a P-47 Razorback completely out of the box, but I spent a huge amount of time painting a very tricky camo and sharkmouth pattern - you can just see it behind me in the video. As a veteran of pocket money Airfix kits in plastic bags and enamel paints, I still hold a nostalgic, misty eyed view of their products. However, I have to say that this video is absolutely spot on. I still make some modern Airfix 1/48 kits - their Hurricane and BP Defiant kits do go together well, and I am currently making their P-40B (Eww, that soft plastic) but I always have a stash of 1/48 Tamiya to hand. As someone on this thread has said, if you want a new starter to go on to make a second aircraft model, make the first one a 1/48 single engine WWII Tamiya. I do like Airfix, but we can still be friends ;).

Thanks Dave - I have several of Airfix's quite old, but big stuff, like the 1/24 Harrier (only got it last week - I might review that soon), plus the Mustang and Spitfire - oh and the beautiful 1/72 Lockheed Constellation. I get frustrated with their lack of quality control in their new stuff, but that doesn't mean they are unbuildable. I'm coming from a point of view of the new/returning modeller - less fuss, less challenges, get into the hobby first, then experience the wider range of kits....Cheers, Chris

Thanks man, this gave me a boost. I am a year and a bit into my second go at modelling [after doing 3 or 4 as a 10/11 year old] and I am enjoying myself. Way back near the start, I encountered one of your 'gatekeepers' [great phrase] the very first time I posted on scalemates, to point out the flaws in an Airfix 1:48 Mosquito. The guy reacted as if I had attacked the hobby as a concept, rather than just pointing out that the clear parts were a dreadful fit on one really old kit with a modern box ["..IF you'r willing to invest a little bit more than just glue and 10 minutes..."]. I really like your passion for the hobby - no doubt the gatekeepers have the same passion - but I dig your POSITIVE style.

I'd add the caveat of picking a subject you care about. I'm currently working in my first kit in 20 years which I've learnt the hard way isn't the smartest first kit back. It's an Eduard Superbug (1/48 Hasegawa F/A-18E sprues bundled with Eduard resin, photo etch and nice aftermarket decals). What's kept me going when things get challenging is the fact that it's a really cool aircraft that I love and has some really nice elements to it. I have really enjoyed the challenges of feeling with some of the smaller more intricate parts. What I haven't enjoyed is the parts whence I've been fighting poor fitting parts and dated engineering. This kit much not be the smartest first kit but it would be a good service or third kit to teach yourself some of the more intermediate/advanced skills required to deal with older kits. The nice thing about this kit is most of the sections with fit issues that need correcting are on the underside and in places less like to be seen so you you can have a go without fear of ruining the model.

Interesting points, I will say that I've had my choice of kits on both ends of your argument critised either for being "too easy" or for being "old and crappy". Really it comes down to build what makes you happy. If you are happy spending four weeks old an old kit just getting the fuselage correct then that's fine. It's like I always say "model your way".
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels 3 жыл бұрын
Yep I can't disagree with that, all I'm saying is as the first step into the wider world, you have more chance of success with an "easy" Tamiya kit than trying to battle an old one. I have old crappy kits in my stash too that I'm looking forward to build (1/24 Airfix Harrier and Spitfire and 1/32 Tamiya F-14!) and I really will need to flex my skills on those ones, which is fine! Cheers, Chris

I enjoyed watching your video, Chris. You are wise to point new modelers towards kits which are easy to build, without a lot of assembly drama to deal with. I would add that the subject be something that really grabs the new modelers interest. Nothing will kill the modeling mojo quicker than building a kit which doesn't hold the builders enthusiasm for the subject. A coworker showed me some pics of a 1/48 Revell Spitfire he had built over the course of a few weekends. It was his first model and he did a decent job on it, but it was not going to win any awards. No matter, it was a subject he was enthusiastic to build and it spurred him on to build more 1/48 kits. His next one happened to be a 1/48 Tamiya BF190E-4/7, and I remember him commenting to me after the build as to how well the kit went together. It's "Tamiya quality", I told him. He wanted to build a 1/72 B-17 next, which leaves his only options as Revell or Airfix, as the two being most readily available. My point is people seem to get too wrapped up in what brand is the best and not what is the best kit for the subject I want to build. I, for one am very thankful that builders such as yourself, Will P and Matt @ Doog's Models put out some great content that help me improve with each new kit I build. I'm heading into my sixth decade this year, so you probably think I'm one of those "old farts", but I'm never too old to learn something new. Having come back to the hobby in 2013, I've really picked up a ton of tips & techniques which have improved my skills, as well as drained my wallet, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Sorry for the waffle, that's Harry's schtick!

Many thanks Ken - yes indeed you are quite right about keeping the modellers interest, and I think that's one area that Tamiya could definitely work on and expand their range. Airfix and Revell definitely cover more ground and there's other gaps being filled by better manufacturers like Eduard and even Meng. Hey I'm an old fart too, I'm halfway through my total journeys around The Sun..heh heh Cheers, Chris

Solid reasoning and great advice mate. You know I've got a foot solidly planted in both camps. I'm one of those who thrives on the construction phase, I love the challenge of solving fit issues and adding detail to realise my vision, but that has mostly stemmed from the fact that my preferred subject matter isn't available from modern moulds. That being said, there's great satisfaction in completing a trouble-free build phase and moving on through the primer to really focus on the painting, markings and weathering , and the Tamiya 1/48 P-47 Razorback is far and away my favourite kit for this. Keep the videos coming, can't wait for the next chapter!

thanks mate - yeah I'm definitely a fan of the older kits where the subjects aren't covered these days, like the big scale Airfix kits of old. Your comments are 100% accurate. The modern model kit when engineered correctly is amazing and the pricing is not that bad. Take Airfix for example. I enjoy their older kits but they should NOT Re- box their older kits without an advisory for the modeler that the mold is old and untouched since…..1971. As a side note, I am investing in some of the older kits from Monogram and Revell that were cutting edge at the time of introduction. A good example would be the Revell/Monogram models of the 1980-1995 era such as the A-6A, A-6E, EA-6, P-61, A-26, B-26, B-17, B-24, B-25 and more. These are still good kits and readily available. It is truly amazing the detail and engineering that Tamiya exhibits in the kits as a whole.

Thanks Jersey - its interesting you mention the older Airfix kits, because some of their earlier stuff (the white box ships and large scale aircraft) actually still stand up to today's standard of fit, engineering and mould quality - if you can find them and don't get confused with their re-box "red" versions as you rightly point out!

As a photographer I find I have to reign back my enthusiasm for photography when talking to beginners... Ultimately we should be encouraging people to just enjoy the hobby at the outset and the more they enjoy the more they will deep dive . I agree... I do enjoy getting into the tough limited run kits and enjoy the satisfaction I get out of those but usually after struggling through one of those I like a nice simple build next... and something like the 1:48 Tamiya Spitfire (the original ones) has a fair bit of room for adding some scratch built detail in the cockpit, not that it needs to be done, but it can be done and it's still a kit that closes up nicely once you're done... I figure do whatever you like, it's a hobby, if you enjoy what you're doing that's all that matters... I do think it's a great time for the hobby being how much information is available... I remember in the 90s what I built was what was at the local hobby shop... Now if I want to build an early 109 I do some googling, find out what's available and from whom... a little more to find out where I can buy it, read some reviews, decide if I want to track down any aftermarket bits... Order it all up and wait...
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed about the scratchbuilding - one of the pieces of mind I love with these kits is you can go to town and superdetail them, knowing that the engineering and fit is designed to do so. So instead of wasting time sanding and filling seams, you can be adding wiring and finer details to enhance it and get an even better finish. Having said that, yes there is always some enjoyment in tackling the lesser kits and getting a solid finish out of them! Thanks for your comment, cheers, Chris

I started again, at 37 and the last time was kind of intermittent at 26 and before that as a kid so you can guess how THAT went. Tamiya really imprresses me with its quality. I've also had good luck with Trumpeter. Trumpeter's deep submergence vessels (07331, 07332, 07333) are ridiculously well detailed and it's made even more impressive when you realize that they're snap kits. With a little bit of panel wash, then a finish of some kind, they look outstanding on the shelf in 3 hours. Tamiya's work is pretty incredible. I have hard time even considering other manufacturers. I was really fancying the AirFix Dogfight Doubles. I was, until I saw the molding and plastic quality. I'm not terribly impressed.

Some of the points raised in this video I agree with, others not so. But whatever your experience and age, you should choose the manufacturer you want to build. Tamiya are good well engineered kits and can seem "Easy Mode", but they're not. Airfix kits, some are harder to build and need a lot of finessing to get a good finish, but not all of them. I came back to this hobby after a 40 year break give or take the odd kit I built with my son. I returned because of lockdown, I joined a modellers group on discord showed some of my first attempts on there and was told "You have to put weathering on it". A lot of kits when I modelled back in the late 70's had no weathering on even the ones in competitions. It was more about making the kit look good (weathering can be overdone and the kit no longer looks good). I got into armour modelling recently and started getting the " That's not a real model, where's the wings and the engine" mentality off some people. The point I'm trying to make is: No matter what anyone else tells you to buy or build, you should build something that you're interested in. If you're into WW2 Allied artillery or armour don't build a plane because someone says you have to build planes, like me you will soon get bored of building something you don't want to. If you want to build planes then build them, the same goes for figures, ships, cars, motorbikes and helicopters etc. Also buy within your budget. If Airfix is cheap and makes a kit you're interested in then buy Airfix! If Tamiya is cheaper where you live and they make a kit that you'd like to build then do that. (Just don't buy (sh)Italeri Aircraft they are not worth the stress. My opinion of course). I like Tamiya, Airfix and Revell kits, If they make a kit I want to build I'll get it. Italeri armour is ok but as Tamiya tend to take their (Italeri's) kits and improve them then I buy the Tamiya kit.

Okay....I agree with your assessment of Tamiya products and your preference for 1/48 scale. However, I decided from the beginning that I eventually wanted to build out some large aircraft (I was fixed upon cargo aircraft at the time), but I didn't have a lot of space, nor a particularly robust budget, so I decided upon 1/72 scale. Since then, I've built out nearly fifty kits, including the star aircraft of the adversaries of the Battle of the Atlantic, painting by hand. Tamiya 1/72 kits are just as satisfying as their 1/48.

I was a returning modeller in 1999. Even as a newbie I could see that virtually all the 1/48th WWII kits were wrong, except for tiny handful (frustratingly, during this whole 1999-2013 period, really good kits only came out in 1/32 scale, which was ALL the rage then, and hogged most of the worldwide manufacturing effort in WWII subjects). I wish I had delayed my return for 14 years, when finally the Eduard Spitfire Mk IX appeared in 2013, the ONE kit which finally changed everything, with its combined quality and markings variety. Since then, many definitive WWII kits have finally come out in 1/48th, the most prominent for me being the Tamiya Me-109G-6, the Eduard and Meng P-51Ds, the Zvezda Pe-2, and the Tamiya Ki-61: All kits with infinite marking choices, and no re-shaping work. The Meng P-51D in particular strikes me as the ultimate beginners model, being revolutionary in having no seams to deal with: Any mention of a beginner's model should always include the revolutionary Meng.

For me, the casual kit builder, it’s easy if I’m unsure what to get, modern Tamiya 1/48, 1/35, and 1/32 . Some of these such as the 1/48 P-38 are just engineering marvels and an absolute joy to build. I’m certainly not interested in fixing manufacturers stuff ups, I just want to build and pant. I don’t mind Meng and Takom armour or Eduard’s own kits, weekend 1/48 spits, mustangs, Tempests and 109’s are superb value.

Good magic question. You have to be a bit deliberate about it - aim to get one technique sorted on each build. Start with your basics and get your paint sorted first. What I suspect is a big deterrent to beginners is that there is VERY little advice on the net about how to brush paint, other than detail painting. Not everyone is willing to commit to an airbrush and compressor right away. Also, spray cans for various reasons can be very impractical or inconvenient. Great video man. In point. One thing I wouldn't say is about enamel paints. I rediscovered them recently. If you need something very tough and shiny - use enamels. They are quite good for certain paint jobs. Cheers.

Thanks - yep enamels have their place, and some spray tough really well. I just prefer lacquer for drying time and the range of colors/useability. Cheers, Chris

Totally agree with everything you say. The hobby is supposed to be fun not hard work. The completed model is supposed to be as close to the original subject as possible and not look like a glued together toy painted to look like it. If it takes hours and hours of toil and trouble to get a half decent result what’s the point. Much easier if it’s a high quality product with good design and tooling which makes the job easier and more fun. I recently made a 1/72 scale Italeri Harrier. And old tooling with terrible fit. Was so difficult to make it ended up taking months to make because it put me off. Just about to start a Tamiya 1/35 Panther tank which l believe is an older tooling but just looking at the sprues you can see it’s well moulded.

72 is my favourite scale.. but I do agree with you actually! nowadays I like to build a challenging old kit, even doing some scratchbuilding (I like obscure aircraft types) ... but if those were the kits I had to built 5 years ago when I started plastic model building I'd have given up xd

Challenging old kits can be fun sometimes - I'm restoring an Airfix 1/48 EE Lightning that someone botched the construction on - lots of swearing and sanding and rescribing going on, but its sometimes good to fight a kit to get a good result! Just not when starting out... On 1/72 scale, there's quite a few new kits coming out that rival or surpass the 1/48 mob, like the new Flyhawk SBD Dauntless, so its a good time to model! Cheers Chris

Just wondering if there was a similar "Golden Age" for Tamiya armor. Any comments on the kit number range, as with the aircraft range below. Thanks.

Ah indeed there is, there's some older Tamiya armour kits to avoid (in the main, they arent bad, but can catch you unawares - watch Houdini's video on this!). I generally would start at 35200 and up... or better yet, try out their 1/48 range particularly the larger vehicles, e.g Tiger/King Tiger. Cheers, Chris

Just to add to all the excellent points you made the same goes for armor modelers the new kits (for the most part) are beautiful, engineered exceptionally but can be pricey for someone who wants to test the waters. The older Tamiya armor kits may not be totally accurate but still go together easily and build up into exceptional pieces and are in the $30 range on the evil Amazon . Martin from Nightshift just did a repaint on a 1970’s Tamiya panzer 2 and the kit is beautiful. Just wanted to help direct any future armor modelers, and by the way Julian from the On the bench podcast gave this video a shout out (but not you by name, I guess he didn’t want you steal any of his jewels)😂😂😂 Again excellent video hit the nail on the head just thought I could help direct armor modelers because all you points still apply

Thanks Frank - yes I'm an avid watcher of Martin's artistry and Julian is a good friend, I think he wants me to pop in on the podcast! I'm thinking of a similar video specifically for new armor modellers - need to think that out carefully...cheers Chris

Is it still alright if you do get a airfix 1/72 because I’ve already ordered one as my first kit

You'll be fine, but see if you can get a Tamiya 1/48 as your second one. Take it slowly and dont expect perfect results at first - enjoy the journey! Cheers Chris

I'd say this is something that goes both ways. Starting on older, cheaper kits will prepare you for dealing with things like bad fit, but it also might put you off. Using a high quality Tamiya kit means you're less likely to encounter problems, but it's more money down the drain if you do cock up.
@beckersmodels

You still need to fill seams on the older Tamiya kits as I explained, but its an introduction to that skillset, not a requirement, particularly if you use the right solvents. If you can get a bead of melted plastic over the seam, that can be easily sanded away once dry and no filler needed. Still needs care and attention, hence why I said this isn't Lego! Cheers, Chris

Check "scalemates" before bying kits, removes a lot of the reboxing doubts...
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels 3 жыл бұрын
Yep - Tamiya notoriously rebox a lot of Italeri rubbish in their 1/72 line, which gets confusing because their later stuff (Zero) in that scale which is theirs, is beautiful...Scalemates is brilliant in that respect.

I only build TAMIYA and Academy models, I really enjoy the hobby and these manufacturers are why I enjoy it. TAMIYA make some of the best kits out there and academy do too, currently building tamiyas 1/48 Heinkel HE-162 and it’s a joy, recently built academy’s 1/72 Thunderbolt Razorback and it was amazing!

I love the newer tool Academy stuff - you might have seen my review videos on them, and I loved building that He-162 inflight. I might check out the 1/72 P-47, I have made several of the 1/48 P-47s too. Cheers, Chris

@@beckersmodels it’s an older kit but the fit is really really nice, lots of detail for the time (except the cockpit, barely any) but the exterior is nice, and the decals are not a mess either! Love your videos, cheers Cam
