When I was young (1970s), "Bad kits" were the norm. They all had flash, sink holes, warpage, dodgy decals, and every other sort of common complaint without exception. But bad kits made me a better modeler.

I have a handful of bad kits in my stash, specifically because they are bad. They’re almost all old-tooling Airfix that have been replaced with new-toolings. There’s a part of me that looks to them the same way that people comb junkyards for a special project, getting a wreck to see what can be made with the “canvas”.

I'm kinda shocked that the Yak-15 was here, because I thought the end result for you looked absolutely lovely. It wasn't a good kit but it's a cheap accessible kit that I think looks lovely! But the Spitfire, despite having lovely markings I will not argue with because it's not a good kit.

Thank you very much! The tamiya panzer suffers from a mould misalignment on every part resulting in seams that need removing, not to mention the instructions are sub-par (and only in japanese for the painting ones) which is why it was an honourable mention here

I'm a long-time modeler, and I'm currently working on a "river port" city in HO Scale. What I have discovered is a puzzling thing in that it seems like NOBODY builds model kits in the 1:87th scale, unless the company is dedicated strictly to model railroad buildings and such. Would LOVE some Scale helos, and Warbirds, Armor, and such in FAITHFUL 1:87TH SCALE! Any ideas?
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 7 күн бұрын
for subjects in scales such as this, 3D printing may be the solution. As you mention, unless a company is making HO scale models specifically, you are not going to find that many compatible products from other manufacturers. Unfortunately in your case, the most popular closest scale is 1/72, but will look noticeably large on your layout. OO gauge modellers have the same problem, but with the 1/72 models being a bit smaller The reason companies don't move into 1/87 is because scales such as 1/72 are already established and very popular as they stand, it does not make financial sense for companies to move into these scales when they know they will sell well in the more traditional ones
@rickmills4801
@rickmills4801 7 күн бұрын
@ModelMinutes Thanks for your reply. (*sigh*) Yeah, that's the same conclusion I came to. It's purposeful, and they're only shooting themselves in the pocketbook. Aside from the appalling retail prices! Especially considering how old the tooling for their mainstay models must be. I'm 64, and the retail price of, say, the Revell, or AMT, 1/32 '40 Ford Coupe, which my DAD built before I was born, tended to cost ME $3.75--4.00! Don't you reckon that set of molds is PAID-FOR by NOW?!? Sorry for the rant. My current project, as I said, is basically an HO scale railroad layout without the railroad. I live in a one-bedroom apartment, and am making an attempt at making a room appear bigger by actually taking up space, and it's WORKING! But the scheme includes a V.A. Hospital, with a typical landscaped front entrance, so I need the ubiquitous small collection of military vehicles set on the lawn, on display as a bracket for the hospital's formal sign. So I've found printed hueys, ambulance tracks, Deuce-and-a-half ambulance, and a jeep, all spiffed-up so patients and families can wander around, of a sunny day. This will include a rooftop heli-pad and Med-Evac chopper, the Hospital campus being a teaching-and-trauma-center sorta place. The rest of the diorama consists of a waterfront business district, behind which will be an assortment of various tall buildings that will also act as my window blinds. When finished, these buildings will be lit, as well as the streets, so that when it gets dark, all the actual outside-world street lighting will blend into the scale streets, kinda making the walls "disappear", See, I live in the top-floor apartment facing the Main Drag of my town. So I'm going to try to "bring the lights inside" after dark, as well as something attractive for people passing by to look at, instead of the P.O.S. mini-blinds I have now, while still having an actual privacy "blind". That's the plan, anyway.

I think many years ago there was an article in the airfix magazine to convert the yak 9 with a engine off the 262 and loads of filler,tempted now to go through my back issues to find it,must have been 1971 or 72 as I remember doing the gladiator on floats and waiting a week for the car filler to set and plasticard from shirt collars.

You're right, there was. I no longer have the 1972 Airfix Mags but it was definitely that year. The same article also covered converting the Yak 9 kit to a Yak 1 and a Yak 3. Neither of them would have been very accurate, any more than the original kit is, but that just reflects the state of knowledge about Russian aircraft at the time.

I built the old Airfix Wellington made of hard silver plastic. The fit was excellent. I built the same kit from a much later pressing in black plastic. It was very dodgy and the plastic soft. I got the super-thin for 1/35 - 1/32 - 1/48 thin rigging, antennas, and wires and 1/350 ships antennas. It's not actually a recommendation - its actually a list of the mistercraft kits I either have in my stash or have featured in a video (the ones in the stash will be built in the future). It gives people the ability to purchase the exact version I have featured if they fancy having a go - and just because I think a model kit is bad doesn't mean it won't stop people buying them, in fact I know some people who have specifically bought a kit that I told them was bad as a challenge . . . So if it supports my channel at absolutely no cost to them, allowing me to be able to afford to make these free-to-view videos, I don't think that's a bad thing. . . ?

I remember buying Mistercraft P-51D in 1/72 a few years back as a decal donor for a specific Mustang Mk.IVA I wanted to build (a plane flown by the final commander of the famous Polish 303 RAF Squadron), and these decals almost ruined the entire project as I ended up having to repaint the model and order good quality aftermarket decals. The Mustang kit itself is a Heller repack, so it should at least be buildable, although probably not all that accurate, right now it sits somrwhere in the pile. The only other experience I had with Mistercraft was a 1/72 Saab Draken kit which I knew was terrible, and based on some ancient forms (I think original Revell from like 1957), but I really wanted to build a Draken quick and as a totally fantasy project, using leftover paints and decals from variety of kits.

@@ModelMinutes I think I managed to successfully save that project. I cannot put a link to it, as in my experience KZbin doesn't like Imgur links, but if you want to check it out, it should be fairly easy to find if you Google "Imgur szalonychemik". It is a bit scrolling down my Imgur page as that was a project from 2019, but I've been on a break since 2020, before I managed to get one kit done this year. And along the way to the Mustang, you will be able to see my aforementioned Frankendraken project.

I personally have a number of Mistercrap models (cheap because good, good because cheap, cough cough) that served me as models that I won't be afraid to ruin them with trying to learn how to assemble and paint them. Some of them were relatively easy to assemble (PZL P11c or PZL 23) and don't look as bad, but some are indeed trash (CR714 - upper parts of the wings misaligned with one centimetre gap between where greebles were and where they should have been) plus yeah, it made me hate doing decals and transfers (I still remember having to assemble Finnish "happy windmill" out of tiny pieces and filling the gaps with freehand - it just looked bad)

@@Jfk2Mr The sole model I finished this year, AMT/Round 2 USS Enterprise D from Star Trek The Next Generation in 1/2500 was a real learning curve in terms of dealing. Entire surface of the model gets covered with large sheets of fairly brittle (although not to the level of Mistercrap) decals. I managed to complete it without ruining a single transfer. Some got torn a little, but I always managed to place them in a way that makes it barely visible.

I thought the Airfix Spitfire was a relatively good kit, I had the starter set version mainly because of the famous 610 Sqn DW-K markings which happened to use my local airfield (at the time) as a forward operating base during the Battle of Britain so I supposed I'm a little biased there. At least Airfix are honest about their old ‘classic’ kits, they make it quite clear on the boxing what you are buying and set the price accordingly. yeah . . .even the companies who make these kits don't blanket the 1/72 and 1/48 scale model kits as "beginner models". Even in the same range from different companies there are some which are dedicated beginner models whilst there are others which are considerably more complex and require more skill to complete and are certainly not beginner friendly. So many tiny kits, hate anything under 1/48 admittedly because my arthritic hands hare the tiny parts. These are some very poor kits to be honest. Had a few rough quality kits this year included 1 with such poorly printed instruction they were useless.

Fun fact: Academy/Minicraft cannot do 144. I've seen better being pooped out of carnival claw games. I'd advise to just avoid their 144 kits at all costs with the exception of super-large subjects like the B-52.

@@ModelMinutes yes, the Most of them are. It’s depends on your luck, you could get a Tiger II for 18,99€ and it will have bad quality. But you can also get one for good quality. The 1/35 models actually really nice, I built the Leopard 1 and it was not a pain in the Ass like the other models.

The Il-2 sturmovik is repack of a repack of a repack of kit made in 1980s Poland, back when it was socialist country and part of soviet block. It was made by ZTS Plastyk together with few other planes used by poland during WWII, like PZL-37 los and Yak-1. The thing is that even then , while PZL-37 and Yak were reasonably easy to put together, Il -2 was already known to be notoriusly bad kit. The legend goes that chief engineer resposnible for making is retired (or even died, according to some) in the middle of the project, and his succesors were not able to finish it properly.

I once took my girlfriend to the Aberdeen tank museum in Maryland. She looked over the exhibits and said, “Real tanks look like badly built model kits.” I guess she’d seen those, too. There’s no moral imperative to build like a god; it’s just a hobby. And as they said in that movie, it’s only a model.

Hi, your honourable mention of Tamiya's Panzer 2, I think I made the exact same model (even the box art looks the same) in 1974. That would certainly account for the bad mould closure lines. The moulds must be knackered by now. Tamiya - shame on you, that is disgusting quality. New (and modern style) moulds please. If anyone wants to tell me that these are new moulds then I would ask why they copied the old ones so faithfully. 📉
@ModelMinutes

These are indeed the old moulds, why expend cost making new ones when people will still buy the kit from the old toolings? Especially if they don't indicate tooling age on the boxes
