Sarah Willis meets one of today's greatest musicians, Russian star pianist Daniil Trifonov. Sarah Willis talks with Daniil Trifonov in Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle, where she finds out how he chooses a piano for important concerts, and is thrilled to hear him perform live for the first time.
Daniil Trifonov had his first piano lessons at age five, and his first professional appearance at the age of eight. He plays solo recitals and concerts all over the world.
Sarah Willis is a British-American French horn player. In 2001, she joined the Berlin Philharmonic, becoming the first female member of its brass section.
She was born in Maryland, USA and grew up in Tokyo, Boston, Moscow and London. At age 14 she started playing French horn and then attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department in London, UK. She studied full-time at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK.
In 1991, she moved to Berlin, where she became Second Horn in the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim.

I had never heard the Bach partita arrangement. My dad always played the original on the violin when I was growing up.

I hate to be a pedant but the piece being played a towards the end of the video is Scriabin's Prelude for the left hand Op. 9.

Last piece is obviously mislabeled. Its the prelude for left hand alone by Scriabin, Op.9. Not the etude Op. 2.

You see...pure luck, talented because his parents took the choice to give him piano lessons. If my parents sent me to piano lessons when I was five, I’m sure I’d be exactly the same as him right now.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of adults who took piano lessons from 5-20 and they could never come close to Daniil.
