I read Stephen King books for their popular culture oriented themes. As an author myself, I like the stories within stories in his books though i don't like the stark gore elements with so much description in them. If you ask my opinion about plotting and imagination i would say genre fiction certainly need structures accepted by tradition. The reason many tried to imitate Stephen King and couldn't able to is his style is his own, cultivated by his earlier times. Nowadays people won't expect another writer write like Stephen King. But horror and suspense is a vast genre and new authors could try a lot of things in those genres, hopefully myself one of such new writers

I pretty much agree with Stephen when he gave the Frankenstein movie for example. To leave something to the reader's imagination is more effective than to show them the answer. The implication where things are left for interpretation is something so strong that it's the best solution in many cases.

I agree. Being so down to earth is probably one of the reasons he can write about "average" bluecolar townfolk so well. I am finishing "Under the Dome" right now and that is the latest example of how in my opinion he writes characters so well.

I always feel like King is just a normal down to earth guy, his interviews are so natural and just well....amicable. It really stands out with this lady, she's just completely unrelatable.

I live in London, born and bred, wear a suit to work, may grab a coffee on my way in before the rigours of the day begin, deal with the tax treatment of some clients' investment bonds, then drive home with the windows open... and what's blaring out of my car stereo? Travis Tritt... what does that say about me? (Don't answer that.)

@iamleda she was extremely (bad adverb) self-conscious and not at all stuck-up as so many are saying here. And my gosh, what writer wouldn't feel out of place with the great Stephen King? Perhaps, Pat Conroy, Ken Follet, John Grisham, Sue Grafton and maybe a few other notable living authors. I would mention Dean Koontz, one of my favorite authors, but my feeling is that Koontz is too shy for interviews.

Actually she isn't stuck up. She's very conservative/reserved. And when you sit someone who is so outgoing and charismatic as Stephen King next to someone who IS conservative and reserved, it can be misconceived that she is either stuck up or he is too comfortable

@LLeopardGGecko "stuck up" is pretty harsh. if you're a writer, and you're being interviewed on stage next to stephen king, you're probably going to feel self-conscious. self-conscious people don't come off well. it's a lot easier to be relaxed and conversational when you're top dog.

I didn't read it as her being stuck-up. She seemed really nervous if anything, and who wouldn't be? Honestly, they probably shouldn't pair King with other writers for interviews like this, because the reaction (even if the other author is good, and having read Niffenegger's "Time Traveler's Wife," she is very good) is generally going to be unfavorable because everyone is usually just watching for Stephen King.

She's talking about witholding information to keep the reader hooked I think, I don't think she's being pretentious.

Man, Stephen King is so down-to-earth compared to the other author he's speaking with. She seems awfully stuck up.
