@PropaneWP7 жыл бұрын
Please explain why this is so well said. I don't understand it. It just sounds like pretentious fluff to me. Being excessive doesn't make you ambitious nor brave. Though, I suppose it sounds nice to say to yourself at the moment when you're about to spend a lot of money on an item that is ultimately rather pointless.
@PropaneWP7 жыл бұрын
I get it in the sense that it's a great thing for a salesperson to say to a customer to make them feel better about an excessive purchase. But I don't see how it actually makes any sense. I have to add that the logic behind _the pointlessness of explaining something to somebody who doesn't already understand_ also eludes me. I see how it's a convenient thing to say, though.

Are you really this dense? The point is these are high price, intricate and luxury watches but... they do not have to be only used or worn when going out to dinner or formal event. They are to be enjoyed every day and blend in with your lifestyle. They shouldn't restrict you, they should enhance you.
@tigerbelly21526 жыл бұрын
Nah. this is just straight up arrogance. Nothing about enhancing how i clean poop. News flash- you are the dense one. I TOTALLY get it!! I've been collecting watches for close to 40 years. My father was a postman in the 'Jewelry District' in NYC for 23 years. He was constantly bringing home stuff that 'fell off the truck'. At the age of 8, I was walking around with an Omega on my wrist. Watches are a fantastic means of opening a conversation with a stranger. I use that device all the time. More, by complimenting someone's watch, they feel a little better about the day and themselves. Everybody wins....!

The sad truth is John is probably one of the realest watch collectors hodinkee has ever interviewed. he is real and passionate about watch collecting. most of the other guys they interview on here are just turds who think because they have a 45,000 dollar watch, they are a real watch collector.
@rumporridge18 жыл бұрын
joe schmo lmao. But what's the official de definition of "watch collector". I've seen this statement before and it's troublesome at the least. It's snobbery. Relax. If anyone who collects more than one timepiece calls themselves a "collector", so be it. They are still consumers moving watches along a given cycle. Breathing life into a mechanical device. Instead of it living a dirt nap existence under a glass display case or worse a frigging safe. Who are we to define a watch guy and who isn't. We need to embrace any form of horological acceptance for our passion to survive and this includes every member we can get into the hobby.

@@rumporridge1 um, that’s exactly who John is. I like the guy’s music but he sounds like a watch snob here. TGV of The Urban Gentry channel knows more about the history of these watches than Mayer. I think my favorite part was "People say 'Well I got the time. It's right here.' But that's not the point." In reference to people using their smartphones for the time. Because that's so true. Automatics, Quartz, Vintage, Pocket watches, it doesn't matter. You buy them not just because they can tell time to some degree of precision and accuracy, you buy them for the stories they tell. I just got my first "big deal" watch. It's a Bulova Precisionist. $315 for a quartz watch, which I'm sure there's autos out there that many enthusiasts will think I should've bought. But! There's a story behind the watch. The blood, sweat and tears of some engineer figuring out how to increase the vibration resonance of the quartz, to create a watch that stays precise for nearly an entire year where most would be 10 seconds a month. I'm also wearing a Casio Forester, a cheap little $20 wal-mart watch. But it's my work watch. It's story is going to be the memories of all the work I do while wearing it. And when I change careers, I might not wear it anymore. But I'll still be able to fondly look back on those memories every time I see it, cause I'll be holding onto it.
