This is a great video. I started playing bass 3 years ago from scratch at the age of 55. I purchased Mark's Starter Pack and it really helped me. I now play in a Blues Rock band. I want to increase my knowledge of applicable music theory for bass and this video is very concise and helpful to me. Thanks, Mark!

The people who didn’t make it past your intro really missed out. I think they forgot it was from a live stream. For a professional like you to invest this much effort to give a free massive tutorial is remarkable. I’ve been stumbling around guitar and more recently bass for many years and this overview has been invaluable. As a Brit I also like your no hype straightforward delivery although I think you are from the wrong side of the Pennines and like me trapped in the Deep South. Many thanks

You’re really showing the value of music fundamental’s (theory) knowledge. Going through this stuff progressively and systematically really helps to eliminate the confusion and mystery. Most of it I am familiar with but, your presentation in a logical sequence is a cut above. Thanks for all that you do!

The one thing that helped me the most with the scale formulae was putting an "R" (Root) in the front of the formula. It then made sense to me..

You taught me a lot tonight. Thank you. I like the way you break things down. It's nice to know I can listen to this video again to reinforce sub median, leading note, etc and stacking 3rds, diminished, Augmented I enjoyed it thoroughly. You are a great teacher.

what always confused me in intervals/solfeggio is that any interval sounds different in different contexts - its easy to hear a third (for example EG ) if its played separately or as a part of C chord , but if the root is different ? i studied guitar in a musical college and when it came to multivoice harmony /solfeggio we were all doomed )) i m 48 and its been 35 years since i started playing the guitar and even now i really struggle when it comes to naming interval/chord progressions by ear (i hear all intervals if they are separate). its easy to pick a melody, or to pick harmonies with an instrument in your hands, but when you see people like Rick Beato you just want to quit haha) what is the best way (or the best order of ear training) to start to hear all intervals not just separately, but in all keys/contexts?

Hey Mark, cool about moving here to USA! I’m from both San Diego/Los Angeles, and live currently just north of Atlanta. I love your up north accent , no wonder I have no issues understanding you, because I am used to my fav Manchester bands accent, and can understand them when they’re drunk (most of the time), you kinda sound like Johnny Marr, Bernard Sumner! :) Sheffield is where the human League is from I think! I love Phil Oakey. They have some great bass lines, mostly synth but I think there’s a bass guitarist for “The Lebanon” :) glad you’ll be closer, so I stop missing the love hangs so much! Lol Dallas or Austin in TX is also cool! I’ve visited. Anyway thank you for this lesson! What you described about the chord progressions having a lot of extras on them is exactly what I’ve been struggling with within music theory. I bought your chord tones course and I’m so glad I did! I’m excited to get a start on it soon as my tendonitis gets better! Thanks so much for your awesome teaching style and materials! I have so many aha! Movements when watching your courses and KZbin videos!

I was lost for a second when you said that one note to another note wasnt a major third Like, ive known about enharmonic equivelence for forever, but it took me a minute to just look at the C major scale for example. Like, from C to E is a major third, but if you look at that as a flattened fourth instead which would be an Fb, which is the same sounding note as E, but F is the fourth in c, and because its a perfect fourth, it becomes diminished once you flatten it Or at least i hope thats right

HI, Thanks for the Video! It is so reinforcing to see you go over things I've read about in books and while I was pretty sure I learned them right, you never know learning from books alone. I do have one question though, it is about embellishments. Every Bass player I see in videos (including you) Embellishes with a bend or a compound bend at the end of playing a scale and where there is a pause in the music, I know it is stylistic and it adds a great deal to the sound, but no one ever mentions doing it. can you give us some guidelines on the usage? I also get a great deal of value from watching live video that isn't overly rehearsed because of things like hitting the wrong note and the fret buzz when you release the strings sometimes. I always struggle to keep fret buzz out of my playing and unless it is something like a ZZtop cover where there is mainly straight a pattern of 2000 1/8th notes I always (75% of the time) miss fret a note somewhere in the song if I haven't practiced it in a few weeks. I guess I feel inferior a lot of the time watching KZbin because everyone is either mostly just jamming (like Ryan Madura) or they have played the song 50 times immediately before recording it. I appreciate seeing someone around my age still having an occasional misstep in playing/teaching.

Ha. I fluff notes all the time. As for the embellishments I’m simply varying the rhythm. Just try to avoid thinking in a rigid metronomic way. Play freely.

I understand why he’s doing a lot of talking, and I agree he’s a very good teacher, but it also drives me nuts. I just can’t learn this stuff because it’s like going to a math seminar. At my age I’ll stick to memorizing bass tabs since I don’t ever plan on being in a band or writing music. I’ve tried many times to learn theory too.

@@RayPaganJr Yes I feel the same way. I learned by playing along with records when I was younger. I stopped playing for 20 years ,and started again due to the pandemic. I know the notes and have a good ear for music, not a long winded explanation. He has to get to the point and stop the BS’ing
