What should be done to solve the problems with Britain's railways?

Let the market function. Railways need to be in private hands - not privatised which is only a state franchise that the state controls.

@@Ruda-n4h It was certainly better in my experience, but it’s no where close to what it might be if there was no Government involvement. Franchises are a halfway house - remember at least one of the franchisees decided to back out and the Government has already re-nationalised the service on the East coast. Rail track is still under full state control too.

I've been to Copenhagen and Stockholm, big cycling cities, Copenhagen much more so. In my time over there, I was astounded by the athletic, slim looking people generally in both countries, all people cycling over there were very fit looking, well dressed. Hence both countries are healthier and happier regarding their standard of living, more than most countries in the world. In Copenhagen, the pedestrian and the cyclist had the right of way, it works. Cleaner air, less health problems, less noise pollution, less accidents. It can be done. Its all about attitude, attitude, attitude in a the culture of a country. The more that do it, the more they influence others. By the way I'm a cyclist and a car user.

There’s a lot of propaganda for cycling. As a cyclist myself I find the sanctimonious, pompous attitude that more cycling is a necessity that everyone must choose in order to be saintly. Cycling is a form of transport just like a car, I choose to cycle because it’s convenient, not because I’m saving the ‘effin planet. I’m quite happy for even more cars to be on the roads and more roads - big 4wd, large engines, luxury cars, super cars are all good.
@jimmybobby4824
@jimmybobby4824 Жыл бұрын
Well there is an in between. I don’t cycle or drive and I don’t have a problem with either, but I wouldn’t want more cars on the road. Turn the entire country into a polluted motorway? Forget saving the planet and Climate change but let’s at least protect our clean air and countryside, from dangerous cars
@nockianlifter661
@nockianlifter661 Жыл бұрын
@@jimmybobby4824 I find that most people that think the way you do tend to live, or commute in high density cities and complain about too many people and cars. For the rest of us this is not an issue. We have to travel and there is no integrated transport system village to village, or even town to town. Public transport is expensive, inconvenient, slow, uncomfortable, unreliable and sparse. Making it more difficult and expensive to travel by car is not a win, it’s punishment, it removes our mobility and freedom. Cycling is not a serious alternative, it’s a lifestyle choice for very short journeys or leisure.

I trained on the NHS. The attitude was that we, the NHS are doing you a favour and don’t bother us unless you absolutely have to. Which meant and still means avoidable early deaths. The majority of people I’ve worked with in London who cycle just do it to avoid the conjested public transport and fare cost. Some just use it to go to and from the station either end. The health argument is questionable, most people’s diet / lifestyle more than offsets riding and you can see that in the bulging lycra they all wear :)

Yes. I wonder what percentage of the workforce actually live within cycling distance of work. I'm 22 miles away from mine and I'm not bloody cycling that after a twelve hour shift. I'd do it for anything under 7 miles, though.

Public transport is all well and fine in a large city(e.g. London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham, etc.), but outside of that - it would be very hard to make such a system to meet everyone's needs. People do make quite complicated journeys. I suspect car usage is falling anyway, what with the new vogue of "working from home". Peter's idea that suddenly we are going to see some sort of vast increase in the public's health because of cycling, is a little far fetched - most people I know who live in London, use cycling for convenience of getting around a congested city.
@MrScottskiuk

I like this show, but what a load of claptrap. If you live in London where you only need to make a short journey to work, a bike is fine. Equally, the transport system in London is world-class. In the rest of the country public transport is non existent and most of us have to travel to work

Isn't the reality that traffic(of any kind) is an indicator of economic performance? Busy big cities(like London, New York, L. imagine what would happen if private cars ownership was banned and apart from cycling and walking you had to rely on a much expanded public transport network. This would leave the power of the economy in the hands of the transport union, strikes would be threatened every year unless their members were the best paid workers in the country.

Motorcycle helmets should not be compulsory on motorbikes. The reality of compulsion is that when it was introduced, virtually all riders chose a helmet anyway. It’s really not comfortable to ride without a helmet anyway and it’s not easy to go faster than about 30mph without goggles. There are times when riders can do without a helmet in town - the same speed as cyclists and the exact same risk-or if picking up a passenger who doesn’t have a helmet, or if the helmet gets stolen.

That may well be true, but he never addresses the fundamental point that if you hit your head on the pavement not wearing one you have no protection, whereas if you do have one on you do have a level of protection. His point regarding shoulders is mute and irrelevant. It's like saying 'most soldiers get shot in the body, so there's no real point in them wearing helmets'. Um, yes there is.
