This is making life impossible for the 'ordinary' constable. You have to understand how the rank structure in the police works, you do as you are told, unless it is obviously unlawful. The poor constable gets allocated a job and they have to give a result for that job. If they are told to knock on someone's door and tell them they are being reported for a non-hate crime, then they have to do it. There will be a due date on the job, and they will have to explain why it has not been actioned. Unfortunately saying 'the police' regarding such incidents, creates the illusion that it is the ordinary copper who trolls through the internet to find something to investigate, whereas it is a select minority of supervisors who decide what is investigated. It's been a long time since I was a police officer in GMP, but I can tell you this, no matter why someone joined up, very soon they would realise that the general public is extremely vulnerable to the scum of society, and the scum of society hate you. Ordinary coppers would rather put scum before the courts to be tagged and released, but with the hope of a custodial sentence, than to record tweets as non-hate crimes. ACPO, if it still exists, needs to catch a grip and take policing back to what it was, and definitely get rid of any political interference. Let me just inform you about the attitude of me and many of my colleagues in the 80s and 90s, particularly with regard to traffic offences. OK, 'traffic' give out the tickets, they are involved in enforcement, we as constables and sergeants of course had a duty to stop offenders, but we had discretion. If you failed the attitude test, like YT seems to preach, then you'd definitely end up in a cell. If you passed the test, which isn't hard, just don't be a ####, then you'd get a verbal advice. Why? Well twofold. Firstly, there is no point in persecuting someone for a mistake, or not having the funds to fix a broken light, basically a law abiding citizen. Secondly, if you are lying by the roadside getting a kicking, the said motorist who got a warning rather than a ticket may feel inclined to help, rather than drive by. My concern is that ordinary coppers on the street will become pariahs, not to be trusted, even hated, when they are just doing what they are told, which if it doesn't reflect Nuremberg, has to be done to keep their job.
