What a wonderful man !!! Nothing less than what we, the British public, used to expect from our police many years ago !!!????
@JohnSmith-gp3co
@JohnSmith-gp3co Жыл бұрын
The issue is, we the police, used to expect so much more from the British public. In generations gone by, the British public were honourable and respectful. They would keep each other safe and would help, actually HELP a police officer in need. These days the British public are full of petty criminals who don’t respect each other and don’t respect the law. A copper could be getting his head kicked in and the public will get their phones out and film it. A copper could be chasing a criminal down the street and the public will shout encouraging stuff at the crim and be happy they’re getting away. (With no idea what the actual crime was)
@tannhauser5399
@tannhauser5399 11 ай бұрын
@@JohnSmith-gp3co - what a naive point of view.... Those time are long gone, and if you want to find a guilty one - look at the mirror (as a police). No wonder it is all getting worse, if all police is doing is shifting the blame. In any normal corporation, even public sector one (such as education sector with larger universities such as UCL, UAL, King's College, Cambridge) or even something like TFL, British Gas and so on - people like that, who are behaving like some of the police officers do - would be sacked. On the spot. No remorse. But somehow, that behavious is still going on within the police, and has been for a long time. And Casey report from March is actually very specific, not the newspaper verrsion, but the original report. Pelenty of data there. Hence it is difficult to comprehend, why somebody would be saying that (of what you are saying). That is just too simplistic point of view missing a lot of other points. At the end, police in UK - it is just full of older generation guys, who still think that something that was OK 20 years ago, it is OK now (expecially concidering behavious towards women). And they are stuck within their roles, and probably going to stay there until they retire. And the new collegues are only learning from that that kind of backwater mentality, and daily behaviour. Also, lets not kid ourselves. Most of those police officers, are not the brightest guys in the world. A lot has average university, with some averege (useless - in a real life - degrees). A lot also couldn't find the job with those kind of degrees, and at the end all they could do is join the police. In a way, a lot of them would be a complete failure outside police (mentally too), and most likely completely unemployable due to education. Note: and you would be shocked, that according to the report from March, there is currently over 900 police officers with open court cases against them, over 1000 in fact - related only to sexual misconduct and also... domestic abuse. Only those 2 criteria. Those are results of some deeper, much more serious issues, mental ones included, and very often connected with the average education. And now, just imagine working there as a young woman.

The Police have become ineffective and woke. No wonder the public have lost confidence. There used to be a ‘Burglary Squad’, a ‘Shoplifting Squad’ a ‘Public Order Squad’. Their task was to prevent and detect crime and they were good at it. Now we have police officers dancing in the street at Pride events. We have rainbow painted cars while crime is being ignored. This is one of the best interviews I have ever watched and solves, in theory, our current situation of lawlessness and the villans who not only disrespect our police, but our judge's and our whole legal system. The reason = "we are soft on crime, soft on the causes of crime" and this has been the case for a couple of decades. Rishi & Suella need to implement Peter's recommendations IMMEDIATELY whilst we still have some hope of turning this around

Unfortunately, we didn't have these in the 70s - like PACE (Police Proceedures), Human Rights Act, Officers getting convicted of assaults arresting suspects/allegations of sexual assault by villians, CPS (the people who decide on which cases to drop) and softer sentencing due to the prisons being full, at Court. If we could Police like we did in the 70s, 80% of crime would be solved and we would need another 500,000 prison spaces. Being a child of the 70s Policing was by fear, not respect. General public didn't care how the police did their job, just that they did it. Villians knew that they would get a bashing if caught, but how many unsafe convictions did we see due to fabricated evidence, who many prison releases did we see? where is the balance?

The way It's going the public will have no choice but to start to take the law into It's own hands and when THAT happens it will NOT be a good time for criminals, no more "mind your head sir", "mind your legs sir" as you get put safetly into the back of the police car, "would you like a cup of coffee sir" in the police station as you're being questioned, it will be a case of them curled up in a ball on the floor feeling sorry for themselves whilst most likely in a pool of blood and broken teeth.

Far more important is the fact that when criminals are caught they are punished, just read your local paper to see the ludicrous sentences (if any) given to habitual criminal's time after time. It can't be good for police morale as they see this too, we need more jails and stronger court rulings.

What a breath of fresh air! Great interview and so much common sense. The old style, residential, (local area beat bobby) backed up with Unit Beat Police vehicles, (panda cars) was a very workable system which, given the advances in technology and other equipment since the 70's & 80's, would work even better today. At least back then, the writing was joined up, not like the totally disjointed system today, due in no short measure to the fact that there are no, really experienced, officers to train the current contingent. It's a poor show when a police officer has to rely on google to search to see even if a crime is being or has been committed. Try doing that when trying to arrest a struggling suspect! As for the CPS, and them not really wanting to prosecute anything with much less than a 99% chance of conviction, that rot really began in Kier Starmer's reign! (No further comment required). If people think Starmer would make a positive change in that area, forget it! 🤡 The judiciary also wants a shake up, mainly due to years of failing to deal out sentences that reflect the seriousness of the crime and having any deterrent effect. We also need to stop giving "concurrent" sentences and impose more "consecutive" sentences where multiple crimes are committed.

Police just gather evidence. It then goes to the CPS to see if there is a case to answer. If they believe there is it goes to court. A trial determines guilt or innocence. The police can’t send anyone to prison.

Outstanding stuff and comments from P.B s per usual 😊 robust methods and zero tolerance to criminals should happen ASAP but a loss of 20,000 police officers in cutbacks has been a monumental disaster to this country. As a nation we were proud of police in the community now now...........

When they have sold off all the local police stations where the beat bobby lived & worked on a long term basis, there does not appear to be any moves to return to that very effective form of policing! They have gone the way of the Post office where there are no local outlets for the public to access!

I resonate with your piece completely, thank you - a tragedy and a scandal about the incompetence and corruption of the police. I have witnessed at first hand their disinterest and laziness in dealing with shoplifting crime with regard to M&S in High St Ken, having spoken to M&S staff and then popped round the corner to talk to police at the station in Earls Court Road. I have read that only about 6 per cent of theft crime gets solved and that 600 thefts a day go unsolved. I must stress that the true figures must be understated as people know that it is a waste of time reporting crime to the police. Effectively, therefore, vast swathes of crime have now been de-criminalised. It is just scary. The police are a disgrace. They are though part of a wider societal problem relating to a corrosion and corruption of our public services, including the NHS and the Civil Service. These public service bodies have become ungovernable; they behave like drug barons or Prince Bishops for want of better analogies. Only the (or an) unstoppable Farage can rescue us as the mainstream politicians do not have it in them to sort out this deeply-entrenched problem.

I received a letter accusing me of dangerous driving threatening me with years in prison. When I asked to see the evidence, the charge was withdrawn but apparently if new evidence comes to light I might be prosecuted. I still have no idea what they are talking about, that day I only went to town, it's slow speed.

Got to toughen the punishments as well. Bring back death sentences for intentionally taking life, treason and importing/manufacturing/distributing illegal drugs. Lengthen sentences, and reduce criteria for life sentence. Abolish minimum term. And more importantly, convicted foreign nationals to face immediate deportation to home country, even if here claiming asylum, and biometrics placed on a banned re-entry database.

Same has happened in New Zealand under Labour. They appointed a Police Commissioner, Andrew Coster, known as “Cuddles Coster” who believes in “ policing by consent” & a softly,softly approach. The results in terms of escalating crime have been disastrous.
