Everyone keeps saying that the girls are so brave. But why do they have to be? These hostages have been to hell and back. Let us not forget that for a minute. Whilst their courage is an inspiration to the country they need to be allowed to grieve, to rage and to deal with the nightmares that they must surely be suffering without the added pressure of having to put a brave face on things so that we, the public, can feel better. We can’t even begin to imagine what they have been through and the best thing we can do for them is let them know they and their families have our unconditional love and support. Let them know that they do NOT have to pretend with us that their release is a fairytale happy ending where all the horrors they have endured magically go away. They have years of rehabilitation ahead of them, and they should be given the privacy now to take care of themselves without the burden of being our “heroes”.
