Nominations are open in the SNP leadership contest as senior figures have backed former deputy first minister John Swinney for the top job.
First Minister Humza Yousaf announced on Monday he would stand down as he faced two confidence votes in Holyrood but said he would stay on to allow a successor to be chosen.
The SNP’s national secretary announced nominations opened on Monday at 11.59pm and would close next Monday.
Scotland’s former first minister Jack McConnell joins Talk’s Mike Graham to discuss this further.

If I walked into a basketball game or a football game and started naming all the positions played by each black player with animosity in front of all the crowds with a microphone I’d be immediately labelled racist and arrested or removed and banned from games probably for life and in Scotland I’d 100% be charged with a non crime hate crime at the least ,but for some strange reason it didn’t apply to Humza I’m bringing back blasphemy laws to protect minorities except women ,anyone can see where his allegiances lie and it’s not with Scotland, there’s been too many party’s picking and choosing their leaders without votes from the public it’s now time that every time a leader leaves office the people have an election to decide the next one because it’s starting to feel too much like a dictatorship at this point in time in the U.K. it’s like they’re copying the EU’s dictatorship of unelected bureaucrats where they decide leaders not the people

I'm a liberal and definitely on the political left and opposed to racism and I think his speech was disgraceful. I will fully support any move to crush racism but you don't do that by accusing all white people of being racist. He was only going to create division and all that would do is breed more racism. He wasn't a very clever man and he caused his own demise

Absolutely wrong comment. They were there to put the Scottish people first together with the economy. Not everyone wants independence he/smdp should concentrate on the many issues Scotland currently has.

The SNP have always had independence as their core principle and it has always been at the center of their manifesto. Anyone opposed to independence should have never voted for them.

I agree with the opinion of the 2 workers he spoke with, not just in Scotland but across the UK. Unfortunately due to the system we have, we will have new faces with the same old outlook.

He has done what was required. He will now be plenty rewarded. Also, how is it that he takes all the blame when there is zero opposition? I don't know when Scotland became a one party dictatorship. And I wonder if the rest of the UK is any different 🤔

The SNP and Independence are toast for at least 15-20 years (if ever) thanks to the total lack of preparation in the last 17 years. Scotland now has a £ 20 + BILLION budget deficit which has to be funded, no real improvement in both internal and export infrastructures, declining education, health and local services. No coherent 'pathway to Independence' has been articulated to the electorate, only a number of very expensive, high-level, glossy brochures full of word soup and totally lacking credibility - promises of taking 100,000 children out of poverty, FREE bikes and laptops. Many assume Scotland will keep the GBP, but when I've asked the SNP how the currency will transition to a Scottish Pound - NO REPLIES - there is no detail, nor is there for other costly matters such as borders with the RUK, export tariffs, fisheries protection vessels. The list is endless because NOTHING has been done.

@@stevec6427. A minority government will not be able to advocate for independence. They’ve had 17 years to demonstrate that they are morally superior and can offer a better delivery than “them”. They’ve tried to spin a good story but events paint a very different picture. They have no real intention of delivering Indy. Being in power is very lucrative for politicians a who are poor to mediocre at best. Its vey much a friends and family affair, nepotism is rife as they rush to feather their own nests. Long serving MPs have become very wealthy whilst dangling the Indy carrot every 5 years. Do you think they’ll willingly give up the that lifestyle? Not a chance. What we have now is a country run by the Greens with the SNP there for window dressing.

Swinney was the SNP finance adviser for years. He was sturgeon’s number two. He must know we’re all the money is and we’re all the dirt is buried. If branch form is also searching for public funds they will be arresting him soon. Or can they if he is first minister.

Swinney allegedly covered up for Sturgeon by stalling the release of documents to the enquiry that would have seen Sturgeon more than likely guilty of breaking the ministerial code and those that he did release were again allegedly so heavily redacted they were next to useless. Let’s not forget Swinney was part of the problem the Scotland faced so he can in no way be part of the solution, as I have said before he doesn’t have any business acumen he has spent most of his working life in the world of politics which we are all aware by now is a world infested with vipers.
