Russell Quirk slams the Labour Government over "further attacks and assaults" on pensioners as 80% of the elderly on the poverty line may lose payouts.
Age UK said its analysis suggested that 10.7 million UK pensioners will lose the winter fuel payment, of whom almost one in four (23%) live in poverty - with a household income of less than 60% of the median - or just above the poverty line.
The charity found that 80% - or 800,0000 - of UK pensioners aged 80 and over living in poverty or just above the poverty line will no longer receive the payment, as well as 78% - or 1.1 million - of pensioners with a disability living in the same circumstances.
Russell says: "Talk about heartless!"

You can tell a lot about a society based upon how it treats its most vulnerable. Who are the most vulnerable in society- children, the elderly and the disabled. We are failing dismally on all three fronts.

I know where you are coming from and agree. What Starmer Reeves and Milliband forget is that we are still largely families - attacking one group isn't safe for them just because that group is stereotyped and their votes aren't needed.

The other day I heard Zoe’s place a hospice for babies in Liverpool is due to close this year after 30 years. Also Revitalise, Southport, holiday accommodation for disabled people is due to close this year after 60 years of being opened. It’s a disgrace and many more of these places will follow. The Government needs to give more money to the Councils so they can help these places. No, all they prepared to do is look after illegals that come to our country, give everything for free and that’s why Kier thinks he too should have freebies. We are all suffering, it’s hitting every generation of the people of this country. It makes my blood boil.

I am 81 with arthritic pain and neuropathy controlled somewhat by medication. I am not one to feel sorry for myself and I have always been an optimistic person who gets on with things. I do remember the deprivations of the last world war which lasted well into the fifties. We were a hardy lot and lived with the cold and a very simple, small-portion diet. We knew nothing else. Perhaps we were healthier. We certainly weren't fat. Oh dear, can I say fat?😯 😄 Now, in my latter years, I am very upset at the thought of losing my tax -free pension, my precious bus pass, my savings being hit and my single person discount on my council tax being removed. I am very scared by all this because my income is just above the benefits threshold. I have already lost the winter fuel allowance which had been a real help! I pleaded with the 'authorities' and got pleasant, encouraging replies however my MP told me that she abstained at the vote! Nice! I don't ask for sympathy. I understand the reasoning. I am sorry for all who will feel the scourge of the hard decisions. I probably won't be around at the next election. I didn't vote for this government. I didn't vote for the Conservative party. I felt, like many others, between a rock and a hard place. I didn't abstain though! The temperature this morning in my living room is 19. It's only October. I have gas central heating. I am expecting a visitor so I may have to put it on. Thankfully, I have a great faith in the Lord Jesus. He has been with me through worse things and He sees the sadness of all of this and the injustice. Something else, let us pray for the folks in Florida today. May God help them. Just received, through my letterbox, a Funeral Plan advice leaflet. Well, thanks for that, Mr. Postman, (no I know it's not his fault, I've got a lovely postman), you've got to laugh!🤣

It's an absolute disgrace. I am not a pensioner yet but I'm an unpaid carer for my disabled adult son and I get £130 a week to live on so I know how hard it can be. I also have arthritis and know painful it is when it's cold. I hope they change their minds on the bus pass at least. Would be totally cruel to take that away from the elderly

My first job was working in a retirement village at 17 as a waitress. Interacting with pensioners every day made me grow a deep-rooted love for our elderly. This was nearly 20 years ago now, and I still think of them. I experienced real heartbreak when one would pass away. I lost my own grandparents even before then. And I have deeply missed having those figures in my life. I hope that you have a support network in place. I urge anyone who has elderly family members to do what they can to ensure they are kept warm and fed this winter. It is a time of difficulty for all of us, and it's important for people to return to taking care of each other. Thank you for sharing, Sheila! Stay cosy

Beautiful post. My fear is for grandchildren cared for by grandparents after school and during the winter hols. The school gates have many elderly collecting their young kin for their hard working flexible hours parents! More galling still is watching smug teachers beam at this group at the school gates not seeing the tears of fear emanating from their decisions to strike? Same with doctors, most very smug yet winning yet more money in strikes. All at school gates, tragic. Sorry, some are nice, but others are just too smarmy smug in their affluent superiority.

One problem for pensioners, (like me), is that the problem of potentially reducing overall tax income by increasing tax rates and scope applies less to us. We have fewer alternatives and less capacity to shift direction because the mould was set in the past. That is why we are called pensioners! In a way we are sitting ducks!

I'm expecting removing the bus pass and rail travel, council tax reduction for single occupancy, and prescription charges. To finish off the pensioners, Reeves may go for wealth tax on assets, in other words, since many pensioners live in large properties or in affluent areas hence their properties are worth a lot and hitting those would bring in a few billion. What's the point of all this? Labour despises OAPs and believes that group don't vote for Labour so hitting them hard is ideologically correct and less about how much money could be taken off the OAPs.
