If the migrants were genuinely fleeing war and persecution, then hotels with no heating would be an improvement. Everyone should have a safe place to stay but pensioners are going to freeze in their own homes. They are of the generation that believe that if you can’t afford something, then you don’t do it - we need more of that. This would be a non-issue had they restricted the WFP to basic rate tax payers, or even non-taxpayers. Could have done £200 for non and £100 for basic, for example. Given the average council tax bill is north of £2K, Gas and Elec not far off that again, water perhaps £500 and food and insurance have gone up a lot, how much does Starmer think those who miss the Pension Credit cut off by a few pounds actually have left?
