Build a new efficient houses of parliament in the Midlands which has accommodation for MPs (where land and property are cheap). There would be no need for expenses, long term this would be much cheaper. Especially if you sold the existing building as a hotel/ housing.

Vehicle excise duty (or road tax to us oldies) is not ring-fenced to be spent solely on the nation’s road infrastructure. It’s simply placed into the general taxation pot to be spend on foreign aid, fake asylum seekers, MP’s expenses… the list goes on.

Fuel duty is already a 'pay per mile' tax. The more you drive, the more you pay. Why is the government trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist? Why not have regional fuel duty charged at the pump. If you live in rural areas you pay less, but if you live within a larger city you pay more.

Taxation on fuel and energy is a stealth tax on food, food production and food retail - it is taxing you to eat! - no sane Government taxes or unnecessarily admin burdens food production in a fashion that drives prices up. Taxation on Fuel and energy for the masses is a taxation on your freedom of movement - the 'luxury' of taking the kids to school, to get to work to go to the supermarket and get the taxed food ... and the 'luxury' of heating your own home, keeping the lights on .... there should be ZERO taxation on fuel and energy -- it would drive the cost of nearly everything down - everyone would be better off .... particularly the less well off ....

The Civil Serpents have been planning this for the last 15 years. The pre-requisite was the need for high speed fibre broadband as the vast amounts of data from the millins of roadside cameras would have overloaded the system. They are now planning a "Pay per Mile" system at a low rate that will be steadily increased to eye watering charges of about £2000 per year so only the very rich will be able to afford the motor vehicle. This is all part of the grand plan to drive the general public off the roads. The government needs ever increasing amounts of our money to fund its totalitarian madness.

Another reason why I’ll will never buy a EV, as they cost to much to buy, then taxed a luxury tax due to them costing over £40,000. I can’t afford to buy one, taxed £500 plus for 3/4 years, then scratch the battery & have to spend £20,000 on a new battery. If you can find someone unless it catches fire before then. It’s like the diesel all over again when the government stated buy diesels then years later they are crap. EVs will be like mobile phones, renew every few years. No thanks EVs.

Thereby reducing taxation across the board and driving growth, which would then create more revenue and allow even further reduction in tax rates and free up money for investment.

Alexandra, Good afternoon I respect your candid approach with guests on your talk show and wish to thank you for tenacity, you’re a breath of fresh air! When speaking with your Guest from New York, you mentioned the word vacuous, forgive me for thinking this word perfectly fits in with your guest when discussing “the motorist” and plans on scrapping fuel duty, I concur with you when diving anywhere in the UK, surely, in part, the problem with congestion, is digging up the roads and motorways and leaving them for weeks (sometimes months) with absolutely nothing happening! I accept Andrew Gilligan is no doubt an intellectual thinker, however, on occasions, “we can’t see the wood for the trees” Give us a break!! Many suggest using Public transport, however, when one looks closely at the reality (unless in London) it’s a non-starter and let’s be honest, the tube often simulates becoming a squashed sardine! I missed a flight by 10minutes months ago due to 13 miles of road works down to one line on the M1 south and not one person working! Rant over. Best regards

When ever people start talking about things like this Is to think if you are not collecting tax from somewhere you have to as it somewhere else. The problem with road pricing is tracking it. You will either have to as checks to the mot system or track cars by anpr. It will cost a fortune and it will add cost for transport so the price of everything will go up.

Road pricing won't help drivers. Nobody will pay less so what's he talking about - people can't choose when they drive! What people dont understand is, its correct EV cars dont need to fill up with petrol, hence the governments fuel duty figures reduce, but EV owners pay in other ways, they have to top up there cars with electricity so there electricity bill is higher than people with petrol cars, so I think its unfair to charge EV owners more money.
