African Kings/Leaders sold their own people to European slave traders. It was a massive industry. The people that complained most when Britain eventually ended the slave trade were the Africans - the stood to lose a lot of money. Surely if reparations are due you need to seek them from the people that sold you into slavery? Not the people that purchased you? If someone steals an expensive diamond ring and sells it - who should I (the rightful owner) seek compensation from? The person that bought the ring in good faith, or the person that stole it and sold it? What does the law say in this respect?
@michaelpcoffee6 сағат бұрын
The person who owns the diamond gets the diamond back. If they stole money and gave it away; the owner would be compensated by the original thief.

This Government is so awful that I would not put it past these idiots to even sympathise and encourage such ridiculous claims and I agree that this claim could be classed as grift . It seems to be forgotten that certain African nations were engaging in slavery long before Britain had any involvement and also continued to supply the slave Trade whilst it continued. The Middle East was heavily involved in slavery at one time as were many other countries ( remember the Roman Empire) and anyone pursuing such claims now should be firmly told to take a running jump and shut it forever.

My teenager son behavior was atrocious, he'd do what he wanted, gets up when he wanted, eats when he wanted. I had enough of him, one day after calling for him several times to come and eat lunch he'd just ignored me. I filled a bucket of water and entered his bedroom, he was lying in his bed and emptied it over him, problem sorted. At his 18th birthday, I informed him to find somewhere else to live, he found a flat and he's living there ever since.

We should claim from North Africa for the capture of many thousands of people throughout Europe (even as far north as Scandinavia); people abandoning fishing villages around the coasts because of the constant danger; taken back to Barbary and sold into slavery - women to Arabian harems - and the men castrated. I want reparation for my ancestors [long before Lammy's ancestors] for his brethren from the Ivory Coast, pillaging ships carrying white passengers, taking them home, enslaving them under barbaric conditions and making them work 24/7 till they dropped down dead. Shameful that not one person in Government has the balls to say this to those seeking compensation for what happened long before they were enslaved.

It's ridiculous. Look how many people reside in the UK and the US that did not even immigrate until well after slavery was over. My grandparents all when to the US from Ireland in the 1920's. So, now as an American, I should pay reparations, considering how the Irish were generally treated? That said, on an interesting note, St. Patrick is reported to have ended up in Ireland because he was kidnapped and brought there to work as a slave. Once he gained his freedom, he returned to Ireland as a Catholic missionary.

You have countries to call home due to the slave trade. I'm not saying it was a good thing because it wasn't. But please answer a question: Why are 8 of the top 10 countries in the world with the highest number of slaves in them still in Africa . We stopped 200 years ago, but Africa has carried on like nothing ever stopped . Maybe the people of the Caribbean should be more interested in that than blaming white European countries

So, reparations, logic. Rome Conquered most of Britain, they enslave 1000s if not millions, so Italy, Rome, the Vatican owe us billions. Anglo/Saxons, conquered and enslaved ( Holland and Germany), the Danish vikings, conquered and enslaved (Denmark), the Norman's ( norse/viking/France) the conquered and enslaved. Where do you draw the line? Africans ans muslims were very instrumental in the so called slave trade, Africans capturing and enslaving their own people( or neighbouring tribes). Islam, massive slave traders and some say they still are ( slave markets now in Libya after Clinton's murder of gaddafi ( the Libyans had the highest living standard in Africa and was the bulwark against mass immigration from sub Sahara Africa!) Add to that the Barbery pirates tgat enslaved many along the English channel in medieval times. So what about reparations? The people who enslaved other people no longer exist, how is anyone alive today responsible for what their ancesters might have done?
