Auschwitz, however is a place where so many innocent people lost their lives in horrific ways and family members and survivors are still alive today. We were attached to the army in Hannover for a few years and visited Belsen Camp , it was a very moving experience to see the mounds of the graves there and think about all the people who suffered . There was a small area which showed photos of the persecuted people and the evil looking guards . Also it was a very eerie feeling as there is no bird song or wild life because of all the lime that was used at the end of the war and as a military camp was quite close sometimes you could heard the tanks on exercise . We had a Jewish friend who wanted to visit as , it was summer she was in shorts and T-shirt but when we parked she changed into a long and sleeved dress to,pay her respects . She could also read what was on the few individual graves in amongst the others . It made it even more meaningful for us . In Belsen there wasn’t only Jewish people but a lot of others like gypsey’s , general convicts who were also persecuted . I agree with the panel visits could be arranged to see the history there .
