While I was sitting in Annamalai Swami's ashram, talking about various aspects of Bhagavan's teachings, Henri Jolicoeur, the man who was filming me, asked a question about Papaji and his devotion to Krishna. What followed was an impromptu interview in which I managed to cover most aspects of Papaji's early life and his association with Ramana Maharshi. The talk was quite a long one, so we have split this particular story into two episodes. The second will be posted soon.

David - You have done a great service to all by documenting so detailed life stories of Papaji and Bhagwana Ramana Maharishi. My infinite thanks to you. There is one part of the discussion around Papaji's Krishna bhakti, which seems to indicate that he felt that he wasted 25 years in that, and that he was misguided by his mother. This seems like conditioned speech, and a classic traditional pitfall, where compares 1 path to another, which just isn't true. Each does a Sadhana which is best for them by God, Mother Divine or Self, or God. Remember Bhagwana asked him how did he arrive to Ashrama, and he told he took a train, then a cart, and then walking. All of them were needed to get there, and equally important. Nothing happens as an accident or waste of time. Had he not purified with his Krishna Bhakta, his gaining of Nirvikalpa Samadhi with Mahrishi would not have happened. So no time was wasted, and it was part of his Sadhana. A train is as important as bullock cart in reaching to ashrama, and what you take depends on from where to where you are going. This also sits at odd, with later discussion where it is evident that Papaji understands how Nature/God operates in grand scheme of things.

Listening to the Sam Harris podcast with Derren Brown I was shocked at what Harris said about Papaji. Sam somewhat hinted that Papaji was the real deal and how unique and astonished Sam was when next to Papaji... The clip is on the last 20 minutes of the podcast. Sam, who has many Zen friends who have made careers in Buddhism, still said only Papaji was the only person he ever met who was in the bliss state all of the time! Very strange this coming from Sam Harris of all people!

Yes, Sam Harris recounts the story of one of Papaji’s many “enlightened” disciples. It was a woman who was being celebrated as enlightened. She claimed to have a silent mind. They visited a Dzogchen master who said something like “really! no thoughts?” then said, “great. let’s sit here for a while and see if a thought arises.” Ever so slowly, the smile dropped from her face… after a while she said “oh.. that might have been a thought” etc. The story shows that this person was not at all enlightened. There were no symptoms, no Manonasa. It’s unfortunate that Papaji allowed hundreds to believe they were enlightened. Ramana never did such a thing. Papaji did visit Ramanashram, but out of all the people that ever went there, he was the only one to change Ramana’s teachings. He said of teachings “this is something new” Many feel there is way too much material out there promoting Papaji when there are many true devotees, that stayed true to Ramana’s teachings, (rather that deviate from them as Papaji did.) If we want Ramana, go to Ramana! If we’re interested in his devotees, why not celebrate Muruganar, Natananada, and Sadhu Om at LEAST as much as Papaji?

It's important to remember that Sri Ramana Maharshi never declared Papaji to be "Self Realized". Ramana also did not authorize Papaji (or anyone) to teach in his name. Many are now outright claiming or "aggressively inferring" that they are in a "lineage" to Ramana via Papaji. This is simply absurd as Ramana never left a lineage. Thankfully Bhagavan's teachings are so pure and complete that we have no need to stray from them by following anyone else.
@moojiisafraud7073
@moojiisafraud7073 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if Papaj's "self declared" Realization is seen as legitimate, it leaves the door open to anyone who merely passed through to therefore pose as legitimate. (As if it was contagious.) It's interesting that absolutely none of the offical Ramana Maharshi organizations, ashrams or learning centres even mention Papaji. Doesn't that stand out?

I think his desire to see God, showed how unripe he actually was. Most Indians would know there is only God! It’s the only thing anyone has ever laid eyes on. I don’t find Papaji to be a “great Krishna Bhakta”, I just see him as someone addicted to visions. A great Krishna Bhakta would have known from the Gita that they’re not the “doer”. Papaji didn’t understand this and thought he could “do” various things to help rid India of the British.

How can we ever know the self when we are constantly copying others and trying to be what we are not? No wonder we become so frustrated. Where is that child within me that knows all and asks no questions? It is not Krishna, nor Jesus, no any other that I seek. Only Self and Truth. All else will then follow. But when? Now is good.

I think if someone believes that everything is one, then there is no differentiation between Krishna and yourself, they are the same being having interesting "conversations" or silence within themselves. It's interesting to me that they'll speak of the unmanifest behind it all yet made by that same "source", it makes existence, so who's to say you aren't Krishna? Ramana came to people just like Krishna, or other "godly" beings. The same being says there is God and isn't a god so neither are valuable statements, they say have no attachment yet David sits here and speaks of bahgavan on at least 35 videos. So if all of it is God it doesn't matter but the same being can say it does...

We don’t even know if that conversation even happened. There were no eyewitness, and Poonja told the story many times with contradicting details. All we have is Poonja’s word, but which version of the story are we to believe? I counted at least 10 variations. Many that have no mention of “how did you get here”, and zero mention of train tracks being ripped up etc.
@lucyhartman1501

The first ever account we have of Papaji telling anyone about his alleged discussions with Ramana is from Henri de Saux. It was written in 1953. In it, there is no mention of "how did you get here?", and no mention of "You have arrived". As the years went on, Papaji seemed to make his alleged discussions with Ramana more and more elaborate, many scholars have said Papaji's accounts are simply "untrustworthy".
@NoRamanaMaharshiLineage
@NoRamanaMaharshiLineage Жыл бұрын
Others commenting here are correct. There is no record of this alleged conversation. A translator would have had to be present, and no translator has ever recalled such a conversation. Krishnaswami was the attendant during this period, and in none of his reminiscences, does he ever mention such a conversation. We only have Poonja's word, and as the others are saying here, he told the story multiple times with widely conflicting details. There is no way to sort out which version he is putting forth is the real one. Even if he settled on one, there are no eyewitnesses to corroborate it. If one is interested in Ramana's devotees, it would be safer to study the lives of Ganapati Muni, or Muruganar. Their accounts are corroborated by Ramana himself, and other devotees present.

+Karthik Venkataraman Papaji ended up learning conversational Tamil to deal with the workers he was supervising in Madras, but I don't know how much he knew when this encounter took place. Annamalai Swami told me that Bhagavan had a habit of repeating short important statements three times. This would seem to be one of these occasions. Papaji said that he occasionally chatted with Bhagavan in English, but if he ever asked a spiritual question, Bhagavan would reply via an interpreter.

We don’t really know if Bhagavan said this to him. In Abhishitktanada’s account, Papaji never mentioned the word “arrived”. Also, in all of Papaji’s various, conflicting accounts he never says that Bhagavan said this 3 times. I think it’s important to not assume out of the multiple, versions we have, that the one where he allegedly was told “you have arrived” somehow meant that Bhagavan then and there declared Papaji Self realized. The attendant Krishnaswami would have been there, and in any of his reminiscences he never mentions such a monumental “declaration”, or anything at all about Papaji barging in etc. No doubt there would have also been an interpreter there too. In the biography, upon being asked if he told the Maharshi about the experience he had in that moment, he said “no, I told no one”.

Most of the tales are impossible to corroborate. We simply can’t say with authority that “Ramana appeared to him in the Punjab” There were no eyewitnesses. He told the tale in with numerous conflicting details. One version was that his mother brought this “Ramana” food, in another version, his wife did, in another version he said “I didn’t tell my parents” (about the vision) His wife never corroborated the account, so we can’t accept that version. How on earth can we know which version to believe, let alone have any faith that it even happened? Numerous stories he has told are conflicting like this. I feel Ramana devotees would do best to only spend time listening to devotees stories that are corroborated. For example Ganapati Muni had a vision of Ramana in a different town. Ramana himself corroborated it.

If we are indeed already the self and searching for it is futile, then wherefrom these fairytales about true self, consicousness, enlightenment have sprung from? Are these also not concepts? If we are already perfect from birth, when did we start looking for the self? Who gave us the idea that we aren't realized already -if there is such a thing as realization- and we need to become something different than what we are? I bought these fairytales for a long, long time. Now I know, all gurus and their advocators and their techniques are not an end. The only path lies within. The only way there is.

Papaji was a devotee and not a disciple. Ramana maharishi gave no Diksha and so no disciples. The problem with achieving self-awarness is not self-confidence. It is the emotional residues in the subconscious that trigger uncontrollable thought patterns as part of our Karma. The Sadhana is a highly disciplined effort to replace all diverse and unstable emotions with one universal emotion of love or bliss. It is not the easy to get imaginary ecstasy that comes with an exciting group conversation.

Correct! Ramana himself said "I have no disciples" and "I am not a Guru" Papaji's "anti-sadhana" stance is not the kind of thing a "devotee of Ramana Maharshi" would spread. He clearly just did "his own thing"

Yes, disciple and “direct disciple” implies prolonged intimate Master-pupil tutelage which Ramana just didn’t do. All the old timers and live-in “inmates” referred to themselves as Devotees. It is near universally held that Bhagavan’s foremost devotee was Muruganar, who never allowed himself to be seen as a “Guru” “Direct disciple” is too loaded a term.

Hi David, Is Papagi told you that Rama, Sita etc came and knock on the door story when you interviewed him OR you read some books and telling here. I really want to know because some Hindu extremists people changing the story deliberately favor to Hinduism. If Papagi told you then I will believe that, otherwise I will not. I believe Rmanamagarishi and Papagi because they are god's man and real Sathguru.

When you speak of papa g playing with shiva and having apparitions of romana before meeting him I can't help thinking he was a bit delusional before the meeting. This draws his whole teaching into question. Was he really a reliable witness?

There are stories from others beside Papaji that claim that Ramana appeared before them as well, even though he was absolutely without question never away from Arunachala. Some people think that Ramana was capable of bi-location (a siddhi). If that is true, then it seems reasonable to assume that Ramana could have appeared before Papaji, and not that Papaji was ‘delusional’. It’s also been documented by many people that Ramana knew of rishis that existed on Arunachala, and mentioned that they would take physical bodies in order to come have his darshan in physical form. Maybe it’s also possible that Papaji had similar abilities, and could ‘see’ things that ordinary people couldn’t see. Again, this would not be confirmation that he was delusional. The thing I found very interesting about David’s story at 14:46, was that it was said by Ramana three times that ‘You have arrived.’ - and Papaji realized that he had always been the Self. This seems to support his teaching style or message (that many call ‘Neo-advaita’) that shows that we are already That - we just don’t know it - and that there’s ‘nothing to do’, though I’m not sure Papaji ever actually said it like that. Many, many thanks to David Godman for these stories he’s documenting. I love them!

So, when a hindu does chanting he sees Krishna (or Haniman, etc)...a christian chants sees Jesus....muslims, jews....so on and so forth. Isn't it the same to say, when a person is afraid of a ghost, ghost is what he sees in dream. Does a ghost has any reality? The question is - have you actually found the God?

God being the subject, the seer, yes I have found God. I prefer the term Self because it is who we all are if we seek our being deeply enough. Tossing aside all that we are not we find awareness alone to be the unborn, the deathless Self. However even this awareness rests in the Absolute, the all pervasive field of nothingness in which all things are seen

The fact is, Ramana Maharishi was not a devadasi's son. He was born to a brahmin parents, second of 4 children born to Alagammal and Sundaram Iyer. See the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppbJnWypl9B-rs0 (see from 3:00)

@@TigerTzu I agree with @Clear Seeing. Jean Klein said Papaji was "dangerous". Klein outright warned his students to go nowhere near Papaji. Lakshmana Swamy also didn't buy the notion that Papaji was realized. Ramanashram have a total of zero Papaji books in their bookstore, they don't recognize him either. Ramana himself did not declare that Papaji was realized. He actually said nothing about his spiritual state. Papaji claims to have had a "blissful experience" at the ashram, but he himself is on record stating that he never asked Ramana to confirm what that experience actually was. A giveaway is if it's bliss, it's not Self realization. Ramana taught that "bliss is the final obstacle"

" *probably* in a good humored way??" 🙄 why did he feel the *need* to say that?? esp., if Sri Ramana supposedly gave the other man a serious answer...and David was, obviously, not there..but that a serious answer was the response, it was obviously *not* meant as a light-hearted comment..so, seems like it was the shadow side of his ego, *jealousy,* that prompted the question in the first place... also, there was a message - earlier in this video - about, "why are you afraid of the dream??" appreciate very much David *Goodman??* sharing his historical view of the *Papaji* story..but that was odd. and the Indian people were far too peaceful, too 'polite,' but only imho, of course - during the partition years.. because *unwelcome, brutal* colonization *can* be a reason to go to war... and it's all only a part of the Infinite Story, right? because, *what* 'authority' has the ultimate say?? as spirituality can & *does* exist in the presence of warfare..i mean, can *anyone* say *Bhagavad-Gita??* 🤷🏾🤔

@@Aceofcups111 He is posing as Self realized and in a "lineage of Ramana Maharshi" via Papaji. Ramana did not declare or recognize Papaji as Self realized, not did he grant him the authority to teach Self Inquiry. There is no lineage. Therefore, Papaji was in no way, some kind of 'official representative' of Ramana and his teachings. He infamously, taught things that were the opposite of Ramana! Ramana always stressed continuous ardent effort/sadhana was necessary. Papaji always stressed no effort/sadhana was neccesary. That's a huge difference! Papajis "new" way came to be known as "Neo Advaita". That is what Mooji teaches. Bhagavan's teachings didn't need "improving upon". Neo Advaita doesn't work. Anyway, Mooji eats meat, charges LOTS of money, and has sex with a female disciple 40 years younger than him. He has nothing to do with Ramana Maharshi.

@@__________Troll__________ Ramana maharshi is great. The most purest soul I’ve seen. He wasn’t papajis guru anymore than he was anyone else’s guru. Seemed Papaji claimed it though. Papaji brags a lot tho he seems to have some enlightened qualities. I would have thought more of Papajis boasting personality qualities would have been dropped. I just hear I’m so special I saw god bla bla. I can hear other speak of similar things and it won’t resonate with the same boastful energy I sense. Even Mooji appears to have some higher spiritual qualities. But I see ego. He loves everyone around him worshipping you can tell. Not in the purest sense. I’m talking about a whole bunch of Papajis students who went off to teach and claimed they were enlightened. Seems all around Papaji there was a lot of ego. I don’t sense pureness and I never have so I decided to comment to see if anyone else feels this. Compare Papajis gang to someone like Eckhart tolle. I sense more presence from Tolle. This is me discovering who I resonate with more which isn’t always who everyone says is so great. Learning about myself here too.

Where did you hear about 17 children? He did get a young disciple named Geneviève pregnant (while he was still married) When his disciples found this out, many left him. The daughter that came from this affair recounted in the preface to Poonja’s biography (German edition) that he then made her hide the fact that she was as his daughter. That to me is not the behavior of a Jnani. When we have the life and teachings of a true Saint like Ramana, there’s no need to try to wrap our heads around the notion that questionable ethics are somehow magically ok in the case of Poonja.

What makes you think a Yogi cannot not a householder. Maharishi said that renunciation is in the mind not in the body. Gita tells you to separate the doer from the self and the action. These are three different entities. If sex is what you are thinking then ask who enjoys the sex. The self certainly does not. Also whatever is in a persons destiny will happen yogi or no yogi.
