Just saying something because "it's the truth" may satisfy someone's need for being "in the right" but will certainly not motivate the players to perform better. It will more likely have the opposite effect. The players may not have the skill level needed to do what is being asked of them, or may not believe that they do. It's up to the manager to nurture them and mould them into a team. Once you go down the negative scolding track, especially in public, there is little chance of going back.
