You know, it's a great time to be alive if you have an interest in military aviation. Not only are we getting a steady stream of fresh content from SMEs via platforms like KZbin, but people like Jell-O, Mooch, Bio, Hoser and others are using their real world expertise to enrich our experiences with platforms like DCS. It kind of feels like we're in the midst of a flight simulation renaissance.

Totally agree with you and well said. I think anyone that's been around flight simulation or combat flight simulation for many years will also agree with what you have said. As a 2nd seater on the duty tanker (always the last to come aboard) I only recall those moments when a BINGO was not an option, and we had a full bag of gas 36K lbs. and CCA said dirty up contact tower on - - - . It takes more than 45 minutes to dump 30K pounds to get to landing weight. It never failed to happen and then when we got aboard, in the ready room waiting for the LSO to debrief us CAG would call on the squak box reminding us to make early preparation so not to delay the last recovery of the day......Everything considered I miss those days and my shipmates the best times of my life.

That diversion cruise from the med up north above the attic circle- I was on that one. We did get a heads up while in the gulf. My mom sent me long Johns that never arrived. Navy goofed and sent our squadron desert fatigues instead… which we wore on the deck freezing our tails off surrounded by ice bergs- fun times

@@kuiper921 You reminded me of a story my dad Joseph Stephens WW2 CPO PBY and aircraft carrier duty told me about cold weather in Alaska and the Navy way of keeping secrets about deployment so to speak. He was given summer uniforms to help keep the secret of the Alaska build up? He wondered. As I recall the story he said it took a long long time to get winter clothing and real suffering took place as a result. Tough duty in harsh conditions. Many died from mistakes or lack of attention. Just saying thanks for mentioning Marine Naval Aviators (my dad was VMFA-212 in the mid 80s). He just wanted to fly, USAF said they didn't need fighter pilots, Navy said you'll be on the boat, Marines said maybe on the boat. (He's from CO, no ocean). Getting ship qual and into fighters gave him gray hairs, hence "Pappy" once into the fleet.

Really, really, enjoyed that. Selfishly I hope this gives E.D. some more followers; so they can make B-Dragon's job easier (and therefore all of us other frustrated mission makers). As a keyboard warrior I really loved Mr. Miller's Raven series too, and how I can 'escape' for about 1 + 30 every now and then, sampling small bites of what it might be like as he describes... Last night I blasted off in my digital Hornet, in the pre-dawn darkness (the northern Med no less), loaded for bear (enroute to a JTAC), and accidently dropped the gear at 350+ IAS! Doh! I'd messed with the keyboard combo for "[G]oggles" (NVG's - I fixed this later). So, I raised them up but the alarms confirmed something had gone pear-shaped inside. Had to dump gas; hold over the boat, in the weather; cycle the gear; then CASE III to the boat. Wondering if I was going leave a greasy smear when the undercarriage collapsed -- and all this with "Jello" in my ear all the way down! "Fly the ball", "fly the ball", or something like that. To anyone who's remotely interested in this genre: Raven One is as good as Red Storm Rising, what I consider the gold standard. I'm really picky. The fact he didn't dumb it down is appreciated - the profession doesn't need any artificial ingredients.

While at DMAFB, Tucson, Az we would drive in our '67 Dodge six pack down beside the end of the runway to watch the F4-C grab the cable across the runway. Each end of the cable was attached to a length of ship anchor chain of 3 foot plus long links beside the runway in the direction of the planes' travel. The poor pilot's and gib's heads would viciously sling forward as the plane was jerked to a halt. We would give them a very enthusiastic thumbs-up with big grins for a successful trap which they would return with happy smiles of their own. Then a B52 capable tug would tow the cable and chain back into place one side at a time. Love your videos.

I own a framed black & white photo of USS JFK anchored in Dublin bay from July 1996. Extra cool for me because my grandfather presented JFK with an honorary degree from the National University of Ireland on 28th June 1963. I downloaded a colour photo of that event from the JFK website which has the President, my grandfather and an Airforce officer who I can only assume was the “guy with the football” (underneath his chair). KABOOM! 😎

You won't regret the leap to a study level sim! DCS has its quirks, but it's a great sim with plenty of diversity in the community. The multiplayer community is a smorgasbord of personalities, good and bad. If you need help, seek out the 107th Through the Inferno servers and their discord. Very helpful group (full disclosure, I'm a member of the 107th) with a very active and large community in the PvE (fighting AI) arena. And if you decide to jump into the Tomcat, I'd be happy to give you a and help out! :)

Hi Ward - I'm a relatively new subscriber, and haven't commented yet but wanted to take a moment to say thank you and compliment you on your great content! I'm slowly catching up by "listening" to your episodes in the background at work. These story episodes are great, but I especially loved the Ward at War episode and have shared the link with both my former military and civilian colleagues who have been at odds while armchair quarterbacking the recent withdrawal. I thought you had incredible insight from your time embedded in Afghanistan. I also wanted to thank you for the Westpoint Cheating Scandal episode. Your personal story about the "gouges" helped me reconcile some nagging internal conflict surrounding similar experiences at AFOTS some 20 odd years ago. Thank you! As a guitarist, I look forward to some more guitar content in the future too!

Looks like you're having a great time! I like the Raven One series (actually BOUGHT the Kindle version of the series!) I enjoy reading about air combat from the folks who've "been there, done that." Would be cool if you could interview Jack Broughton, but he's gone now. Thank you for your posts. We flight sim, armchair aviators eat this "stuff" up! I read "Silver Waterfall" recently.

I’m on the T&E side of the house and I have one of the hoodies from DCS where it shows the HUD from a hornet 🐝…. It’s a BVR 120 shot. And man I have a story about how that can cause a storm with security lol. Loved the vid! I naturally follow Both channels and it’s actually the first time I’ve seen all them together. Really awesome.

Subbed. Been watching a while Ward and the content is always 100% genuine and since its real life it doesn't need any extra bells and whistles.........seeing the screws of an aircraft carrier as you're about to land? Just land in Edinburgh next time, beers on me. Thanks...

Absolutely fascinating segment! Ward, you do an incredible job of offering a great deal of diversity from episode to episode - often within any given episode itself - yet there is always a feeling of cohesion, it all holds together well. Thanks for sharing your some of your experiences at HOOK via these episodes for Team Mooch. I dare suggest that this adds new meaning to the term "multitasking" for you! Best, Ken

Vince has a very entertaining show but i had to go back to the pbs carrier documentary after he had the episode on the flying tic tac and mentioned he was on that cruise/work up. Forever linked sort of to an event which the “mis”history channel made a living on.
