If I had a nickel for every time Netflix introduced a love interest of colour in the sequel of an original film to create a pointless love triangle that isn't going to go anywhere, I would have 3 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened 3 TIMES, RIGHT??!
@incharak19273 жыл бұрын
This isn't exclusive to Netflix, seen allot of this trop in romantic/comedy genre. They love to add a racially ambiguous handsome guy who deeply falls in love after knowing the typical white lead for 8 whole seconds.
@lauragoreni30203 жыл бұрын
I completely agree, I really hope he's not just a token black character. Also, let's not ignore they called the Swedish guy "Ikea", that would be like calling a korean person "Samsung" or a Mexican "Burrito". I guess the US doesn't care about xenophobic comments if the people are white. For American people who may not get it, just imagine you went to school abroad for a year and people called you "Hamburger" or "Trump" (aka any stereotype, just like Ikea) to dismiss you. That's called xenophobia, it means that people stereotype you and treat you differently (worse) because of your nationality. If you have never experienced, you're lucky, because in some places xenophobia can get as bad as racism, with people denying jobs to others based on their nationality and in worst cases even resort to violence. And they put it in the trailer. Who tf greenlighted this???
@witchplease96953 жыл бұрын
@@lauragoreni3020 Netflix has films that are bigoted towards all groups of people, don’t know why you expect otherwise. The character they made say that is a stereotypical sassy token Black girl that exists just to worship her tall white bestie. At least the Swedish characters have actual arcs and plot relevance..
@lauragoreni30203 жыл бұрын
@@witchplease9695 i expect otherwise because I have standards??? The black friend should have an actual personality and plot too, but at least people don't shout "chocolate cookie" at her or something. The issue with the token black friend is just as bad if not worse, any person with a brain wouldn't like token characters, just as they wouldn't like xenophobic comments, obviously.
@lauragoreni30203 жыл бұрын
@@witchplease9695 Xenophobia isn't much of a thing in the US, there racism is more widespread. However, in other continents xenophobia is very common. My friend was denied many jobs and apartments by people of her same skin colour just because she's from another nationality. So in some places where it's common, it's considered just as bad as racism. Idk about all continents, but from my first-hand knowledge I've witnessed xenophobia amongst white people in Europe and amongst Asians in Asia. It's 100% hypocritical of Netflix to have a movie about an American, attractive white girl to face prejudice just because she's tall, and then have xenophonic comments made to a foreigner and the definition of token minority characters that are just there to pretend Netflix cares about inclusivity, don't you think?

This gives off the exact same energy as the kissing booth 2. The female leads are beautiful women, with money, intellect, good friends and family, good education, having their dreams come true, having amazing guys that want to date them and still managing to complain about everything.
@maiar22392 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'd cross "intellect" off the list. Both films try to convince us that their protagonists are brilliant (Jodie being a well-read teenager and Elle being brilliant enough to pass the entrance exam of very prestigious and selective universities without problems) because it's seen that Netflix believes that being intelligent is essential in a teenager 🌈quirky🌈, but they don't make it believable at all with the dialogue and actions for its female leads, who think like girls without the most basic common sense. Typical case of what a movie says about its own characters vs what they actually show about their characters.

you don't understand. just bc u don't always see it or you've never been exposed or awared of doesn't mean it never happens bc in my case, i really relate to this movie. i'm 5"5 and i always hear every other tall people hear. i know what you're thinking my height aren't even tall but here in my place, it's tall plus i'm kinda skinny which made me look taller. i never saw this a problem to myself until people started to point it out. u see? there's no such thing such as insecurities, it's just the way the people around us percieve it that making us look to it as an 'insecurity’. it's not us, it's them, their perception and some of the comments are invalidating these feelings as if having this insecurity wasn't bc of them in the first place. you're just proving that the main problem to this movie is actually true and real and tbh the acting was kinda lame tho

@@lancemartinmagbuhos6168 I’m not saying it wasn’t sad that it was cancelled, I hear it was a great show, I’m just saying it was a factor. to be fair, i definitely prefer the angle theyre taking w this one. i feel like the first one couldve been interesting if it had been-less ab a girl being unreasonably-tortured for her height and more ab how (as individuals living in a society that puts pressure on us to be flawless) we tend to focus on small insecurities that most people wouldnt notice and blow them out of proportion, often to the point where we irrationally-believe everyone to be hyper-fixating on this same thing (when theyre, most likely, not). i get the vibe that they actually listened to the criticism levied against the first film and applied it to this film. i could (obviously) be wrong, however i feel like it definitely has potential, and i hope we can all go in w an unbiased-lense, as opposed to hate watching it because we're expecting the same problems as the first one

I am 186 centimeters tall (EU)... When I was a child and teenager, people always made fun of me because of my height. It never bothered me. In fact, I realized that they are trying to cure their complexes of short stature on me...I am proud of my height...Height should not be understood as a flaw, but a blessing. By the way, I come from a country where, according to statistics, there are the biggest people in the world. I'm currently in Germany, where people are short, so they think I'm a giant, it's funny to me. Otherwise, my friends, neighbors, acquaintances always tell me that they want to be as tall as me. Girls, be happy that you are tall...Otherwise, models are tall.😂❤❤

I’m getting sick of the hate on this movie. As a tall girl who’s struggled with my height most of my life, these were really relatable movies for me, especially with the addition of the anxiety problems. People hate on this movie mainly because Jodi has a problem with being tall, and insinuate strongly that she can’t have those insecurities or problems, or that her problems aren’t as bad as others’. PERSONAL ISSUES AND PAIN SHOULD NOT BE COMPARED! Every person’s struggles should be validated, everyone’s pain should be valued. The amount of people saying that Jodi doesn’t get to have her own struggles because her life is “so perfect” really shows how much people know about mental health issues… Anyways, thanks for coming to my TED Talk!

Why does Netflix put a second "love interest" in the second movie of all of their teenage romance trilogies? The same thing happens every time. The girl flirts with the other guy but ends up with their boyfriend. The second love interest isn't needed. Kissing Booth 2, TATBILB 2, and now Tall Girl 2. These are basically the same movie just with different problems and resolutions. At the end of the day, I still watch and like them.
