The idea of Goku being an adult starting from the 23rd Tenkaichi Budōkai Arc (Episodes 133-148) was enough to terrify Akira Toriyama’s 1st manga editor, Kazuhiko Torishima, as he feared that Toriyama’s decision would involve phone calls and complaints from the readers. But there weren’t any at all. It seems that they accepted it.

@ Imagine if, for example, the creators of Tiny Toon Adventures or Fairly OddParents just up and decided that one day all of their child protagonists were going to be adults from then on. That’s fairly unsettling to think about especially in the case of Fairly OddParents where the entire premise depends on Timmy Turner being a child, because only children can have Fairy GodParents.

I remember when I first watched these episodes as a kid, I thought it was cool as hell to see Goku all grown up. I was not expecting it at all but I loved the idea. I've been watching him from the start of the anime being a kid growing up like me, and watching grow into a young adult and still being his naive, pure self but at the same time seemingly being "enlightened" by his training with Kami, feeling on a whole different level compared to anybody else....it actually inspired me. It made the idea of growing up much less scary to me.

Oh no, Bulma did in fact mean it that way. She didn't mean it in a "oh he's grown" way. Remember Bulma is very shallow so seeing Goku becoming handsome actually intrigued her. Especially since the anime added in that scene of Puar trying to defend Yamcha's looks and Bulma was like "Oh Are you sure?".

16:29 That “Editor”, Torishima-san became a higher up at Jump but he almost shut down the possibility of One Piece being published. Good thing he was convinced otherwise. I think the interview of him telling his side of the story of how One Piece was published is still on KZbin.

I strongly believe if Toriyama-sensei had not created Adult Goku, the character would not have become as iconic as it still is to this day. We may not have Naruto Shippuden and Boruto (just an example I am familiar with) if we still had chibi Goku.

Growth spurt is kinda unreal but it is real 😂 I still remember my 11 year cousin is still 130 cm, then 2 year later he hit his puberty and become 160 cm. 😂

There are some dub watchers I know that are put off by Goku’s Japanese voice being the same as his child voice. How do you feel about it in contrast to his design?

In Japanese anime, it is very normal for the main characters to have a female Seiyū. Naruto, when he grew up in Shippuden, still has the same voice as when he was little, the same goes for Luffy.

Toriyama himself said that they had to keep Nozawa as his adult voice since her accent and voice to him was perfect to represent Goku's character. That settles any possible debate.

At the start of the series Goku is 10 and Bulma is 16, by the first tournament Goku is 12 so by the third he is 18 and Bulma is 24. Not all that weird for boys to have a big growth spurt between 15 and 18.

That's impossible since the first tournement was 8 months after the start of the story and that's why the Dragon Balls were still rock, Goku was alto stated to be 14 in one of the first episodes but then realized he was 12

The entire section where Piccolo saves that family is filler, by the way. There was no indication of good in Piccolo's heart in the Tenkaichi Budokai whatsoever up to that point. Unless one might want to argue that Piccolo choosing to fight under the "fair" grounds of the Tenkaichi Budokai sound like an indication.

Piccolo's age cannot be compared with human age, physically and mentally he is more like 18 to 20 years in the 3 years

48:05 Replaced isn't the right word for this as it implies that this was dubbed first and then when Goku grows up, we hear Sean for the first time. When that is far from the truth. Sean's crew started somewhere in Dragon Ball Z, roughly 20 to 30 episodes from now. Stephanie was part of the crew too voicing another kid. This crew would dub all the way to the end of Z, go back and redub the first series where Stephanie voices Goku as a kid until he grows up, at which Sean takes over because he's the voice of Adult Goku for the last 2 or 5 years at that point. Stephanie would continue to voice other characters until she was replaced by .........Someone when Dragon Ball Kai was being localized for North America. Dragon Ball Kai is Dragon Ball Z remastered for HD and cut down on the filler that existed purely to let the manga the other anime was adapting stay ahead. All to prepare audience for the then upcoming Dragon Ball Super.

I actually much prefer the English dub because not only does it do a good job (although the Japanese provides some context that is missed), Goku's voice actually changes as well which makes sense. In the Japanese, I can't get over his voice remaining the same (it's altered slightly, but barely). P.S. That still in the outro of the group together is the most wholesome thing

The eng dub changes characters too much. There is a certain sensibility that is lost when you alter a character. This influences how people perceive the character.
