Jaysen Gill Back when I was there, sure. Most of the guys on the snare and tenors line now march top six. Almost all of them. But yeah when I was there it was true. Spirit was down the corner and many of my friends marched spirit.

Rimenuir you’re literally looking at a video of JSU playing warmups five years ago and use that as your basis for saying they’d get outplayed? Really? Norfolk is not bad. They can’t play above like 150 and their backsticking shit is cute. It also doesn’t fool me. Being able to play different sticking patterns and throw in backsticks does not make you good, much less better than one of the most technically proficient college lines in the world.

I love matchups like this. When I was at WCU (more corps style) played at a Panthers game with a HBCU type drumline from SC and it was a lot of fun seeing those guys do their thing, It's definitely different. What they do they do well though, and god damn do HBCU lines have style.

I hate to say this ..BUT this is the reason why the WHITE MAN will think he's superior. Prairie View, Bethune Cookman, Norfolk State, Virginia State, North Carolina A&T would have been a more sophisticated choice. It was like sending a delayed student to an advanced class. When the schools I mentioned play corps style bands they are clean and the other bands know it. It sounded alright in high school. But we gotta do better.

I mean hear me out if I Talladega had a drumline like pv or Norfolk it would've been less remedial feeling. Just like when scsu plays against Florida state. Scsu can be clean and sophisticated sounding. They can also drop the hood n!&&@ bomb on them anytime as well. All I'm saying is that I agree with everyone else. Talladega is one of those bands that are meant to be band only.

Okay first off I would like to say that both lines are great but JSU is one of the best lines I have ever seen if not the best. The precision is INSANE but I just want to know how these two got lined up. They are both different styles and totally different experience levels. Talladega is known to be one of the best bands around because they are. As a prior Talladega student in band as a percussionist I am proudly saying that Talladega is an amazing band but did not deserve to be put up against one of the best drum lines in the country. Talladega, keep on going because you are Amazing ASF but why dont you have any tenors? Tenors give every band event that spice that it's missing. Also from examining the video it seems that JSU has much more funding into band than Talladega does. This is understandable because if anyone has been to Talladega it is a VERY VERYYYYY small and poor town, therefore there is not a lot of funding put into Talladega band. Regardless of peoples opinions, TALLADEGA IS AMAZINGGGGG but JSU is on a whole entire level. I have literally never seen such a precise drum line in my life. But much love to both bands JSU is my dream college.

If you cannot appreciate the completely differing styles of these two lines you have a very unhealthy bias. What a wonderful opportunity for folks to see the talent, musicality and respect for their respective craft that each line had. I marched JSU and only ever had the opportunity to be a part of Corp styled programs, but my respect is off the chart for both styles and the kids who dedicate their time to it.

One thing I have to say TC pick up you snares and have them hang on the leg correctly. Damn! I get so sick of seeing snares sagging way below the playing height. If your going to have them on a leg brace then place them on correctly. It pisses me off when you can't play your snare. And please develop more. This sounds crappy. JSU Southerns sound way more advance even though its two different styles at least get with the program.

Talladega was kinda sloppy and the basses sounded like the shells were cracked and the drum heads were about to bust. I do like their grooves though, especially the last one. I marched with JSU so I know that most of that stuff they were playing was warmups. Machines, I tell ya.

The styles couldn’t be conflicting but Dega is beasting these grooves and Jacksonville has always had a name for themselves. Can’t really call a winner with two sections like this. I agree with the person who said jacksonville needs to go up against Norfolk State million dollars funk squad. That’d be a nice battle that made sense. And just think Dega’s band had only been in existence 2 years when they went up against this band with decades of experience and leadership. Hmmm.... Some of the best HBCU bands could easily excel at JSU's style. I don't think it's trying to be like anyone else to try to do fundamental and technical things. That's a lame excuse for people who want to accept their one way to doing things. I just like HBCU football fans who don't see the point in their teams being as good as other FCS schools or PWI on the D2 and D3 level. This "they have their thing, and we have our thing" mentality is BS. That's why I see no problem with HBCU bands flexing their technical side before they start to put on a show, and it's a completely ignorant way of thinking to say they "conformed" or " tried to change their style" or " switching up for white folks." There is nothing wrong at all catering to a crowd. If there are certain artist who are really big in an area playing their music is fine. yes you want to show off what makes you actually you, but there is nothing wrong with giving the home side a little love to. Isn't one of the the major differences with HBCU bands the frequent playing of "popular music?"
