In this vlog we take you on a tour of the famous Medieval Tallinn Old Town which is a UNESCO World heritage site. Part 1 of our tour of Tallinn Old Town begins on the edge of the city as we head into the upper Old Town (where the political and religious powers once lived) we show you the viewing platforms that will allow you to get a glimpse over the whole of this beautiful 13th century old town!
After Patkuli and Kohtuotsa viewing platforms - two of the best views of the Old Town, we head over to Bishops garden and Piiskopi viewing platform which has a view looking over to Telliskivi creative city, Balti Jaam Turg (popular shopping market), Kalamaja and over towards Stroomi Rand (Beach) and Rocca Al Mare which has the Estonian Open Air Museum and Tallinn Zoo.
After taking in the views we set off to explore the sights up close as we walk over to St. Mary's Cathedral and then onto the stunning Alexander Nevsky Cathedral which is right opposite the government building and surrounding gardens. Then we take a walk down Pikk Jalg (which means long leg in Estonian) down to the lower old town (where the buildings were originally built for residential and commercial purposes). We grab lunch from a cute little bakery Loiri-Pagar and eat our pastries Al Fresco at Deer Park on Nunne. After lunch we take a walk along Lai Street (meaning wide) which is the wealthiest street in the Old Town, boasting lots of theatres and museums. We grab a coffee from Vegan Inspiratsioon a quaint cafe on Lai street right next to the tallest building in Tallinn - St. Olaf’s Church.
Parallel to Lai is Pikk (long) the longest street in the old town, here we take a look at the House of the Black heads, The KGB Prison cells, The Holy Spirit Church and the Great Guild Hall before finishing the day at the Passage of History - one of the many fascinating passages in the old town, this one has tiles on the ground the whole way along with historical events including, the first time Estonia was mentioned on the map and the date Estonia gained their independence. The tunnel ends in the future!
Upcoming videos
Be sure to tune into part 2, where we complete the tour from the Old Town Square and we climb the tower, lunch at the famous medieval restaurant Olde Hansa, and finish off this 2 part series at the Danish Kings Garden and Kiek in De Kok Museum.

We saved money and travel points, quit our jobs, rented our house out and boarded a one way flight. We started this KZbin channel to share our experiences with friends, family and anyone who plans to travel to the places we’re visiting. We leave TKT tips/facts on all our vlogs and blogs to give information that we wish we’d had before visiting. We hope you find our content useful :)

Thank you, for all the videos you've made in Estonia. Every place in the world has so many nooks and crannies and history and people to explore one could never understand it all, let alone portray it in a short YT video. You are so positive and loving, warms my cold Estonian heart. I've learned a lot about my own country from your travels. Always watch you with a smile on my face :) Cheers! And good luck on your travels!

@@TideKnotTravellers The building itself is beautiful, but it was built as a symbol of Russification (and that's why it is built into that location exactly). Though the Baltic provinces were annexed to Russia in the beginning of 18th century (and some parts of Latvia later than that), it had special authonomy, including German as the official language until the end of the 19th century, when forced Russification began. During the same campaign when that church was built, Estonian peasants were promised to get free land, if they convert to Orthodox faith. After some did, they were told "Ok, go and grab your free land in places like Siberia", but they were not allowed to convert back to Lutheran anyway. And now, the Orthodox church in here is split into Estonian (directly under Constantinople) and Moscow churches (mostly serving Soviet-time migrants, including that cathedral). So, it has been more a political symbol, than just a piece of architecture, and many Estonians find it insulting, if it is represented as a symbol of Tallinn.

@@TideKnotTravellers Apart from more distant places, there is a lot of choices for making daytrips, especially if renting a car. For example, Suurupi lighthouses - Türisalu cliff - Keila-Joa waterfall - Paldiski (a former closed town, Soviet nuclear submarines base) - the coastal area northwest from Paldiski (cliff can be accessed both from the sea level, and above, and there are stairs connecting in the middle of the walk to the lighthouse area; at the top of the Pakri peninsula the waves are hitting directly the cliff, but it can be passed if the water is calm as well, as it is about just one metre deep) - the mouth of the Vasalemma river (about one km from the road, but as there is no track, you may get wet feet though) - Padise monastery ruins - Harju-Risti medieval church with quite weird clocktower (likely half of it collapsed already ages ago, and it was restored the way it is) - beaches and forest lakes around Nõva - on the way back to Tallinn, Rummu career lake and a former prison (today, it's commercialized, overcrowded, and every blogger has been there already though) - Ämari (former Soviet airbase, today NATO, and there is the creepiest graveyard where the Soviet pilots are buried under the tales of their warplanes). That list is too long, so for one day, a selection should be made anyway. Paldiski can be well reached using public transport (minibus or train) as well, and the Pakri coastline is just a walk away. Or, another place for a daytrip using public transport - Haapsalu, with it's medieval castle ruins, wooden central town, and seaside, where even the Russian czars family used to spend some time in summers (so they built a railway, no longer existing, but the wooden railway station is a fine example of wooden architecture). And, of course, you shouldn't go out of Tallinn without visiting any bogs (one of the closest to Tallinn - Viru raba, not hard to visit using public transport as well, but using a car you can also add other locations like coastal areas in Juminda peninsula, or areas just next to Tallinn in that direction as Saha chapel (as a legend goes it is older than Tallinn itself, though the current building is about 500 years old; and, there are Pagan sacrificing stones just next to it), 3000 years old stone graves near Jõelähtme, Jägala-Joa waterfall, etc.

Our feelings towards this building changed throughout our six months in Tallinn, initially when we saw it for the first time like many tourists seem to, we were just wowed by it's beauty as a piece of architecture and couldn't believe something so large and grand appeared around the corner of these quaint streets. As time went on and we wandered the streets of the old town time and time again we became more aware of just how much this building really does not fit with the beautiful design of Tallinn old town, along with our increased knowledge of the history in this part of the world, it blows our minds that it is even still standing there.

11:00 That is not Deer Park, although there's a statue of a deer. I'm not sure what's it called, but the real Deer Park, Hirvepark in Estonian, is located on the other side of the Old Town, near the Freedom Square.

Hmmm, it’s a mystery. Tried to Google and find out but it doesn’t give a name just talks about the statue of the deer. Our tour guide (one of our previous videos) called this deer park as it’s supposedly where the deer famously fell. Maybe they’re linked? We have been to Hirvepark over the other side but just assumed it’s a popular name or something🙃☺️

@@TideKnotTravellers I know the legend, but he must have confused something or got ahead of himself. These young costumed guides are not always the most reliable source of information, since they prefer entertaining theatrics over the historic facts. I assure you, that place has never been called Deer Park, until very recently it wasn't even much of a park, just a verdant space between houses.

@@TideKnotTravellers It is not a park. It is called "Nunne tänava haljasala" (literally: the green area of Nunne street). Technically it is a pocket park or parkette. However, the Estonian word haljasala is also applied to public lawns, shrubberies, grassy strips like medians etc. As for the deer legend, it is one of many invented legends about the etymology of Reval and it is not an ancient legend as such. The Danes called the place Lyndanisse (has nothing to do with Linda, mother of Estonian national epic's hero -- yet another invented legend during the era of national romanticism). :) Revalia/Rävala (or Viking Rafala) was the name of the county or region. There is currently an exhibition on the birth of this city at the Tallinn City Museum Merchant House (Vene 17) English intro is here: linnamuuseum.ee/en/cat-linnamuuseum-en/linnusest-linnaks-800-aastat-tagasi/ If you are interested in the earlier history of this part of Europe, I'd recommend: www.aup.nl/en/book/9781641890977/the-viking-eastern-baltic

@@TideKnotTravellers If you're open to more recommendations: check out the Maritime museum -- both the Seaplane Harbour and Paks Margareeta (Fat Margaret or more politely, the Stout Margaret tower) and the Open Air Museum at Rocca al Mare (if you haven't already). meremuuseum.ee/en/ evm.ee/eng/home Of course, right now would be the perfect time to venture into countryside and forests to forage some wild strawberries or go for a hike -- if the weather permits. Over here you can check out the hiking routes, forest cabins, campsites: www.loodusegakoos.ee/where-to-go/search-options

Actually that's a myth that no building can be higher that St. Olaf's church. No such regulation exists (at least anymore).

Oh interesting, we had wondered if it’s a steadfast law or not. Think it’s still currently hanging in there as the tallest 👌🏼

@@TideKnotTravellers Actually it does not make sense to build very high buildings in Tallinn because there is still plenty of available ground. But yes... there is a regulation that prohibits to change a silhouette from the sea "drastically"

The Newsky Cathedral is disliked by the Estonians mainly for 2 reasons: it represents another Russian occupation and russification, and it does not fit in the picture, it's a different architectural and cultural style.

Stargate Max we generally hear it referred to as ‘the Russian building’ understandably the locals don’t seem to want to say it’s name. It certainly does stand out among the beautiful cobbled streets and medieval architecture, we explained a bit about it on our Instagram page to coincide with this video🙂

Honestly I find it sad that you were obsessed with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It's not a medieval building and doesn't fit into the old town. It was built at the highest point of the old town, in front of the provincial government (modern national parliament) building during the height of imperial Russification programme as a symbol of Russian imperialism. The historical religion of the town and of Estonians is Lutheran and this church doesn't represent neither the town, nor the native locals and as a symbol of Russian imperialism, it was even planned to be demolished in the 1920s and many Estonians still somewhat hate it.

We are showing all the sights of the Old Town not just that one. We are definitely not obsessed with it, in our earlier videos we mention it as a Russian building and that it looks out of place. This video is just a sightseeing one, which is why we don’t talk too much about any politics or history here. In part 2 we do of course visit Freedom square and St. Johns Lutheran church and actually put a lot more focus on that 😊
