I have also always been torn... I love the range and volume a shanty can have when sung by a full choir of men and women. However, when listening to only men sing them, you get the authentic shanty sound as it would've been sung by sailors in 17th and 18th century. I love hearing both versions but something about the all male sound makes this land loving lad feel he has gotten his sea legs like an old salt lol
