Fun fact: This song was traditionally sung at the end of the final journey when the ship was docked at port. The "her" that you hear in the song is actually the ship, not a woman.
@kushankurdatta68514 жыл бұрын
This makes the song surprisingly wholesome. Thanks.
@evanrowe88174 жыл бұрын
It’s all in the way the song was sung to each man you can’t define one song to an entire world each means something different to every man woman or child so the ship is a her so the loved is a him or her it’s the words that need to hit home and home is where the heart is
@robertkeeton384 жыл бұрын
You may think you leave your ship, but you never really leave do. I remember her smell, the sound of her engines, the taste of the sea air, and the hours she and I spent gazing into an endless horizon watching blue sky and blue water dance their eternal ballet beneath a silent audience of stars.

I joined the tall ship Duyfken in Fremantle in 2014 and spent the next 7-8 years as crew. In 2020 the ship left the west for eastern shores due to covid and I couldn't follow. I must've listened to this song/clip a hundred times while drowning my sorrows. Then a couple months ago I was invited to fly to Sydney to join the crew again to sail Sydney to Hobart for the ntional wooden boat (tall ship) festival. I spent 4 glorious weeks as crew again. A week shake down, 10 days at sea and another week at the festival. Flew back home a few days ago and while I'm happy it happened, I find myself listening to this song again on repeat. Till next time Duyfken.

We recently watched the ships Pass in Review (army term) at the Festival of Tall Ships in Galveston (APR 2023). In fact, we got to see them three times. They passed by where we were on the Sea Wall, and turned to come back. Then we moved to the park on Pelican Island and watched them come through the back-bay to the docks.

I've seen/heard them play this song countless times over the years, but it always brings me back to when I was a kid, sitting at the top of the stairs, listening to them practice in the basement with the band. 6 years might feel like a long time to you now, but wait till you hit 30.

I know this is a decade plus ago ... but it's one of the most beautiful things I've heard. 7 guys sitting around a table singing like it's nothing when it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. My heart is FULL. Listening to this literally brought me to tears. So beautiful.

I've wept to this video multiple times as a grown-ass man. It's so beautiful and I can't even explain why. It feels like I'm nostalgic for a life I could've never known--or like I'm grieving the loss of someone I've never met. Isn't that strange??

Dont forget the random glasses of wine lying around. Just a couple of men hanging out and occasionally singing shanties.

My dad and grandpa once owned a ship and small crew, and they were a small fishing crew, but the boat was really old and the bottom rusted out, and during a storm, a wave literally busted the bottom out, and the ship sunk quickly, there were plenty of life boats and land wasn't far away, but my grandpa, was the only one who died, he was the captain and he lived by the law of the sea:"the captain goes down with the ship" and as my dad and his crew left, they sung this to the sinking ship and it's captain, my father told me this story and I'll never forget it, and this song always reminds me of the man I wished I could meet, my brave grandpa

I call bullshit. the whole saying of a captain goes down with his ship, is that he wont leave it if men are aboard. if not everyone can leave, he cant leave either.
@shaskasu-130pm64 жыл бұрын
the same thing happened to me in the Navy but our ship was hit by a old depth charge and I was a Navy gunner. when we had to abandoned ship our Caption paid the ultimate sacrifice. we sing this song to honor his sacrifice to thee, God Speed

I know it’s about a ship, but I can’t help imagining it being about a sailor being encouraged to let go of his attachment to a woman he let go on the mainland. He’ll be gone for months if not years, and he’s unlikely to forget her considering there’s no other women around, but ultimately she will move on, and this fact haunts him. Sad
