What is the meaning of Taken For a Ride? I broadly agree with people who say it's about getting over depression. But however the interesting part about the song is that the hinted at cause of depression changes each verse, and a lot of the song places emphasis on not overthinking stuff to be happy. In the first verse, the character isn't depressed due to something bad happening, rather, they are just searching for some higher happiness that isn't there, and even though they are happy, or at least fine, they don't realise this and search for 'true' happiness, spiraling them into despair when they don't find it. Next verse I want to draw your attention to the line: 'Lonely paperbacks that wanted just a taste of feeling to implode them before living' I believe that this cause of depression is a sort of sensual depression, where sort of nothing feels as good or as fulfilling or just as much feeling at all, as it should. It sort of says if the character got just a taste of the feeling that they had before, that it would be so much compared to their current, bleak, disconnected existence, it would figuratively implode them. Basically, the character thinks they should feel more, well, feeling, more sensation, than they do whenever they do stuff that used to feel fulfilling and looking for that, they find no way to increase this, leading to depression. I also see that the word lonely implies that the things that would feel fulfilling are social interactions, and meaningful conversations with other people, and either the character doesn't know about this and tries to stay away from people, or just is a social outcast who does want to join in and interact, which of course being rejected socially would lead to more sadness. The chorus is mainly about getting over all this depression, but: 'The chemistry is gone, taken for a ride, far away from you, no longer left inside' Really stuck out to me. I think that 'the chemistry is gone' and 'far away from you' hint at post breakup depression, which means more heterophonic tunes of how love bites, and another hinted at cause of sadness. Then the final verse, I think this one especially is about overthinking, and overall the main message of the song. I think everything apart from the first line hint at this, and I'll give explanations for all of them. 'Or is it just we all think that our answer isn't real it's just a picture of a letter' This is about wondering whether anything we do or say, or even us (our 'answers' so to speak) is real and meaningful, and whether it's futile to try and do or not. 'Bumble mumble make the rounds no matter what you'll seem profound it's useless just to worry, Something normal happens somewhere far away in clouds so please stop thinking this is happy' Clearly to me at least, this is just summarizing and telling the sad character that it is utterly useless and futile to worry and overthink, especially when it comes to stuff like the last line we covered, and the nature of reality. The last line of this excerpt also makes me believe it talks about not worrying what everyone is doing, or what's happening with someone else or somewhere far away, and to just focus on yourself. Additionally, the first 2 words 'bumble mumble' make me think that the song is also saying don't try to figure out what everything means and ascribe some higher meaning to everything. Some things are just gibberish, or not worth going into deeper detail about. Speaking of, as for 'Listening to painted whispered light on top forgotten hill' I think it's complete gibberish, real Tally Hall style. I think that Taken For A Ride is a story of despair, presented in a happy tone, about a character being driven into depression by a multitude of factors, such as overthinking and worrying, which then led to more negative consequences such as their partner leaving them and them being rejected by society, sending them deeper into despair, and potentially recovering at the end. In short, Joe Hawley origin story.
