Tractate Sanhedrin is the fourth part of the order of Nezikin. The literal meaning of the words is: “The council of seventy-one Jewish sages in Judea during the Roman period". However, in this tractate it designates the higher courts of law (the Great Sanhedrin - with 71 members, and the Lesser - with 23) which in the latter part of the Second Temple period administered justice in Israel according to the Mosaic law in the more serious criminal, and especially capital cases.
Sanhedrin focuses on questions of court jurisdiction, criminal law and punishments. It also discusses the World to Come. The Gemara of the tractate is noteworthy as precursors to the development of common law principles, for example the presumption of innocence and the rule that a criminal conviction requires the concurrence of twelve.
The tractate includes eleven chapters and has 113 pages.

מסכת סנהדרין היא החלק הרביעי בסדר נזיקין. המשמעות המילולית של המילה היא: "מועצת שבעים ואחד חכמים יהודים ביהודה בתקופה הרומית", אך במסכת זו הכוונה למייצגי בתי המשפט הגבוהים (הסנהדרין הגדולה - 71 חברים,והקטנה יותר - עם 23) אשר בחלק השני של תקופת הבית השני היו אחראים לקביעת הצדק בישראל על פי חוק הפסיפס במקרי הפשיעה החמורים יותר, ובמיוחד במקרי גזר-דין מוות.
סנהדרין מתמקדת בשאלות של סמכויות השיפוט של בית המשפט, משפט פלילי ועונשים. המסכת דנה גם בעולם הבא. הגמרא של המסכת ראויה לציון והיא בישרה על התפתחות עקרונות המשפט המקובל, למשל חזקת החפות והכלל שהרשעה פלילית דורשת הסכמה של שנים עשר.
המסכת כוללת אחד עשר פרקים ובתלמוד הבבלי יש לסנהדרין 113 דפים.
