I’ve oversized indoor coil or air handler by 1/2 ton on most jobs where they would fit in the last 24 years. Added TXV on most. You get a bigger coil, cabinet, blower motor that cost $50-100 more at the time. I set blower speed lower for a quieter unit, less water pulling off of coil in horizontal or DF and to help with humidity removal. Then when SEER went from 10 to 12 then 13, 14 and now 14.3 SEER2…most times I have been able to swap hp or condenser without issues. Most times it’s just better to change the air handler or coil due to mold growth, rust, longer parts warranty from the manufacturer and AHRI matched. The bologna about 410A heat pumps being ran on 22 indoor coils…The older coils were thicker and stronger than these new pieces of outsourced junk.

Hi Zach, happy Father’s Day. Was just at a customers house quoting a new system. He has r22 system and pretty good leak in evap coil. He’s always been a cheap skate. GE air handler in attic from like 1980. One of his suggestions/thoughts was to use existing air-handler and replace the evap coil, keep outdoor unit and replace compressor and whatever else needed to be done to convert this 1999 r22 condenser to 410a. No, just no Bill. Lesson here, as the pros, we can’t always listen to the customer and entertain their ideas trying to save money.

My friend is an installer and he replaced the condenser and left old coil and tried to compensate with a piston, well, it didn't work went to txv didn't work either, resulted in a damaged compressor, replaced compressor under warranty and now super heat too low and subcooling too high. Thank you and God bless you and your family as well . Told him to replace evap , but he doesn't think is the problem

Just yesterday I put an ac in for my friends sister for a super deal. Couldn’t get a match on a coil. I put a 13.4 seer 2 ton durastar (ruud) in with a 2 ton Goodman cased coil I uncased because that’s all I could get from Ferguson. Didn’t like it but it worked fine.

As a new tech I learn a lot from your knowledge of working in the field. Nothing beats real world experience.

I always try and replace condenser and coil at the same time. I think I’ve done a condenser only on a handful of occasions as long as the refrigerant type matched.

I had an air handler, nominal 3 ton, and I wonder when that thing was put in. I was small, the tubes were thick, the fins were sparce, and it had capillary tube metering. I was a total dinosaur and the one good thing you could say about it was that it lasted and lasted. I finally put in a modern 410a unit with a TXV and it was like double the size and I'm guessing double the efficiency. After seeing this video, I think it was a wonder that the old one worked at all. When I put the new one in, I definitely got much better cooling.

You can put in a correct air handler and or condenser that isn't documented a "matching" system. I did a slab air handler replacement, put in a R410 A-coil air handler, swapped to an R22 TXV, put in MO 99. Compressor before retrofit was running 9 amps, after the retrofit its running 6.9 amps and the SC was spot on, no hunting.

I learned the hard way on pairing a higher seer condenser to an older evap coil rated for both 22 and 410. About a month ago later I that dreaded call of my ac is not working.. Long story short is the terminals blew out on the brand new condenser compressor terminls. I’ve never made that mistake $$$$costly again.

If you want to pull a permit and work legally, AHRI-matched systems are the law of the land in Florida. There are some exemptions, especially in apartments with ceiling units (pancake units), as an AHRI match ceiling fan coil would not physically fit.

More good information. thank you. 😀 Cheers from Chicago. Our condensers don’t rust away, but they get small round holes for some reason?

2 issues. Techs are just too lazy to take the time to change the coil or air handler unit, or customers are too cheap to replace the evaporator coil or air handler. I avoid customers that want things done cheap or half ass. I want to do the job properly if i can. I have used condensers for others that dont want to spend lots of money.

I had an old evap, with new Goodman condenser 5T. Only Piston and about a 95 foot line set, and 18 foot drop. Super heat would run a while then just crash down and down. The compressor just could not handle it, and blew the output tube off the top. Frustrating.

So your saying it's best to have a matching evaporator to condenser?!!! Hum nice concept! Lol Thanks Zack!

The new coils fail more frequently. Once the coil starts leaking refrigerant there goes all the credability. It's easier to get out of HVAC and become a talking head on youtube telling others what to do and you have to do this because your sponsor is probably tell you to do it. Not that I am trying to pick on you Zack. But there's alot of talking heads on youtube, that got out of doing HVAC because of being gifted in telling people what they want to hear rather than well you know what, If this is about honesty you'll admit it, or gloss it over either one. *FREON WARS* coming to a neighbor near you, if not yourself.

Did you see the video where they say you need 15 things to start an HVAC business? I started with a cheap set of gauges, a 10-in-1, scale, home made recovery machine, hopes and prayers.

@@user-cz8do7xl8u If you're not properly licensed for the work you do, you run the risk the government comes in fines you or worse. There's also certification(s) you need to do HVAC. / Liability Insurance etc. / In Texas an HVAC contractors license isn't a registration with the state. Without that HVAC contractors license? You get caught big trouble.

Makes good sense! Always tried matching like for like but I can see where you’re coming from. Mismatched components is a definite recipe for oddball pressures. Your so right about doing the best practices in the real world is sometimes hard to do in whatever you might be doing. The world is just not too forgiving. Good subject!
@AustinAirCo
@AustinAirCo 2 ай бұрын
@@kg4muc well you can have odd ball pressures with matched equipment. So matched equipment doesn't necessarily mean problem free. If you don't understand what the pressures are telling you: matched or mismatched isn't going to matter that much, except maybe used as an excuse to rip it all out and start over. I've run those calls going behind people more times than I care to talk about. Mismatching can mean more than just name brand of the equipment. Just as much mismatched on size. If it's all the same brand sized wrong, that won't work either. To the untrained eye, they would claim it is a matched system. When you've done this as long as I have: nothing is left to the imagination. People are easily duped by talking heads on youtube. We get paid by people clicking / or endorsements or both. So which then is the con game?
@kg4muc
@kg4muc 2 ай бұрын
@@AustinAirCo Very true! Brand mismatch is the least of the problems sometimes as you've said . Knowing what to make of whatever reading you get on you gauges makes the difference in a properly working system and one that under performs. Experience is the best teacher in most cases.
