Coming back here after 6 years and still......breathtaking. Can't compare this genious to any other drummer in the world. They're all doin fine, assimilating Billys Patterns and chops. What makes him outstanding, he is really the most dynamic drummer of all times. Listen closely to his records or live....Billy is not just Mr. Powerhouse. He seems to be the only one, capable of playing all of this stuff even in piano pianissimo. Only thing about him is, what is all of our fate, to get older.....unfortunatly....compared with his acting in the early 70s with Mahavishnu.....everytime I watch and listen this old stuff.....I think of an earthquake....he really exploded on the drums that old days

Breathtaking....today, there are more versatile drummers, more faster ones, more complex playing ones.....but there's one clue none of all is the "next Cobham" since today: Larry Rosen from GRP-Records once said in the 80's when BC recorded a few albums in their vicinity: "We are proud to record the most powerful and dynamic drummer in the world." He still is.

Faster, more complex, and more versatile drummers than Billy Cobham??? Name two.
@michaelkievernagel682410 жыл бұрын
Dan West Dennis Chambers, Terry Bozzio, Thomas Lang, Marco Minnemann, Gavin Harrison, Thomas Pridgen....yahhh they all use these "cobhamisms" and brought them to perfection. Their great benefit listening and learning from B.C. What Billy does is progressing Louis Bellson, Gene Kruppa, Buddy Rich, Max Roach to name some....

Why would he ruin these beautiful drums with awful heads like that, urgh. As terrific as his playing is, the tom sound is so disappointing.
@shrikramalei909110 жыл бұрын
Indeed! Chris, what worry me even more is the toms themselves don't seems to be as alive as I would like them to be, compared with the Yamaha Phenix, they sound lacking attack, but Billy play makes you forget that!
@shrikramalei909110 жыл бұрын
***** well, I did own myself a huge kit Tama Star, so I know how good they are, Phoenix Yamaha sound different, low end are really up to my taste, I asked Billy in person about that, I was surprised by the answer, well, I used to be mad about Sonor Signature, I cooled down since, what matters is the way you play the drums, Billy came in Nepal recently and had to play on a very cheap small kit, he handled it very well, even little disapointed did he say, but he was a master on it anyway! @OldManYellsAtCrocs9 жыл бұрын
***** yeah i agree they would need some taming for sure, but i just don't think those heads are the right way to do it. The suede finish on them just gives these awesome drums such a wierd tonality.
@andyham60946 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s definitly those heads. He’s using the Evans onyx heads and they are BY FAR the worst heads I’ve ever tried. It just totally kills the drum but not in a good way. I like double ply and thick heads and I like the Evans black chrome and remo ebony emperors but these Evans onyx heads absolutely suck on the toms. They actually sound pretty good on the snare but just makes the toms sound and feel bad no matter how well you tune them. Spanky actually demoed the Tama limited silverstar hyperdrive white kit which he also used these heads and that video it sounds bad too. If there were other heads on this kit it would sound magical cause it’s definitly not the kit, just sucks these heads were used for this video for this amazing drummer and for the best drums on earth.
