Billy’s the man, one of the many legends I look up too. Him and Simon are two of my favourites 🥁 also these Star drums sound fantastic, very expensive but worth it. I watched how they were made and was extremely blown away with the craftsmanship, it made me switch back to Tama. Glad to be part of the Tama fam again, I shouldn’t have left in the first place.

He is a left hander, very much like Ringo Star of Beatles and an Indian drummer Sivamani. All three left handers do wonders with open hand playing style and the other right handed drummers have to practice immensely to play in Ambidextrous way.

I've been listening to him for decades, but have never seen a video until this. What's up with the setup? Is he left-handed (open), but right footed? This is one of the craziest setups I've seen.

+Redeye Percussion From what I understand, he plays from both sides using a right handed drum setup like most of us. He is equally adept at riding with either hand. In fact he has ride cymbals on his left side, and as you will notice, he plays his hi-hat with his left hand instead of crossing over. In my opinion, that's how all drummers should learn to play from the first time they sit behind a set of drums. It's so much easier than the cross-over technique mos of us use. I remember when I was studying, how the drum manuals would always say to practice with both hands leading - for example, play a passage or set of bars starting with the right hand, then switching and starting with the left hand. This is what Cobham and a few others have learned to do. More drummers should be able to play equally well from the left or right side. it's not easy though...hehehe

+joe jewhurst - Thanks for the reply. I am familiar with the open-handed style and I knew he used it, but the tom setup is what threw me off. The thing that looks odd is the rack toms going in a different direction than the floor toms. I suppose if you played like this long enough, it would be natural, but it still looks crazy.

+Redeye Percussion yeah, I agree with you. it does look like a crazy setup, but boy, oh boy, it sure works for Billy though. The guy is just an amazing drummer in my opinion. I remember hearing and listening to him way back in the early '70's when I was in high school, and just getting into my musical career and playing drums. Back then I didn't know about Steve Gadd and Dave Weckl, and Vinnie Colaiuta and some of the other world's greatest drummers. Of course like all of us, I knew and loved BR, the master who all drummers aspire to I think. Anyway, enjoy chatting with you. Keep your sticks close to your heads and your feet firmly planted on your pedals. Just have fun!

This version actually seems to be on "Palindrome". There are many studio versions of this incredible composition! Also check out his latest album with "Frankfurt Radio Big Band" called "Broad Horizon". That's my favorite version so far.

Shells made in Japan, but you get corroded Chinese hardware. Might as well just get a Starclassic or a cheaper Chinese set.

I think its a result of poor engineering, the sound in general is poor, the hole set sounds lifeless including the cymbals.
