I still use FCP because I bought it 8 or 9 years ago and have received every software update since for free. In the software world that’s the best $300 investment I’ve made. The Option+T keyboard shortcut to apply a cross fade between clips is a fantastic time saver.

I gave up on Premiere two years ago because of the same issues with instability and just how slow it’s gotten. I personally use DaVinci Resolve and absolutely love it, but Final Cut is a great editor too, and the magnetic timeline is its best feature. I’d really love to see Resolve have a magnetic timeline. However, since I do some advanced compositing and effects I need Resolve. I know a lot of people will do advanced compositing in After Effects and import their renders into Final Cut. What I think would really put Final Cut on a competitive advantage is if they had tabbed workflows and would marry Motion and FCP into one app. In Resolve there’s an edit page, a page dedicated to compositing called Fusion, and a page dedicated to rendering called the deliver page. It’s all-in-one application so there’s no need for round-tripping. I know Final Cut has come a long way over the years and would be my next editor of choice if it weren’t for Resolve.

Great video. So many things to love about FCP, media management and search tools, roles, stability, simple uncluttered UI especially on a laptop which gets out of your way and just lets you create, and so on but yes the best feature has always been the magnetic timeline. Makes editing so fast (as long as you have your clip connections set up properly). I seriously couldn't go back to a track based NLE again, especially one that crashes all the time.

Recently found your channel through the DJI camera reviews, but this was just perfect timing as I'd been reconsidering my Premiere Pro subscription after a year. It's quite unnerving to see that the subscription for a year is almost as much as a FCP license. So, I'll likely trial it soon, thanks for that friendly nudge! I also love your video style and aesthetic so the fact that you can make GoPro footage look as good as you do with the tools you recommended is very inspiring. - Angel
@TamaraGabrielUK

Ah thank you 😊 And yeah, it’s well worth giving the trial a go as you get something like 90 days which gives you a really decent amount of time to figure out if you like it or not. CineMatch and FilmConvert Nitrate are awesome. It would take me twice as long to correct and grade footage without them, especially the GoPro footage because I really don’t like that over-saturated crispy look, but grading the Flat footage freehand is a bit of a nightmare without those plugins, so they’re a massive lifesaver.

I owned a copy of FCP for 10 years but never used it because I have been a Premiere my entire career. Once Premiere started crashing on every project I did, I bit the bullet and started learning FCP and now I am so angry at myself for not using it back when I bought it. Would have saved me so many long hours of renders that crash and lost projects.

Not to mention how much money you would've saved. Let's face it, Premiere + After Effects and other bunch it is quite expensive considering DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro are just one time purchases... And well Resolve has free version as well which is really capable as well.

15 or more years ago, I used a “cut down” version of Final Cut Pro - “Final Cut Express” on a not very powerful MAC - and it worked seamlessly. I’m going to purchase, soon, Final Cut Pro - I like the idea of avoiding annual subscriptions ! One thing to bear in mind about the various editing software packages is that there’s a certain number of users of them who are very “techy” and they can usually get to grips with problems (Premiere is a very widely used piece of software and I’d be surprised if there are any really “unsolvable problems” with it). Many users - by contrast - like myself - do not have the time or inclination to bone up on some highly technical matters to “fix things”. I count myself as reasonably “computer literate” and that’s it - I suspect Apple sussed marrying a MAC operating system with video editing software specifically designed to work on it would keep people like me happy!

When I started filmming and editing I had a very weaky notebook that was impossible to manage Premiere pro or other professional video editor. I found one that runs in my notebook, Filmora. I'm still using it. This video editor was created for amatures and begginers, but every update they include very professional stuff. Today is Filmora 12 and it's perfect for me, I can do professional video editing on it. It's very user frendly interface and runs smootly in my Macbook air m1. It deliver to much for a cheaper price.

I'm just a hobbyist where video editing is concerned and use it mainly for editing drone/Osmo footage. I found Premiere probably the easiest to use (slider based controls), but also experienced crashing and other niggles, plus the cost of subscription is high for hobbyist use. I've always found FCP to be quite unintuitive myself, if honest, but that's maybe because I haven't taken time to learn it properly! My MacBook has an M1 chip, so I suppose FCP been optimised specifically for this. I started to use Resolve - initially the free version - then got a free licence to Studio, when I purchased the Speed Editor. They say it has a steep learning curve, but it's also quite easy to just get up and running, plus all the plugins you mention are available for that platform too. Not trying to promote Resolve here you understand - just sharing my personal experiences.

Any thoughts on Apple Motion versus After Effects? I made the switch from Premiere to Final Cut a few years ago, just as a hobbyist, and when I couldn't figure something out I always found great, free tutorials over the years, but I haven't been as lucky with Motion. I've always found really good info and tutorials on AE, and not to say Motion info isn't out there, but I guess it just doesn't have the user-base to be covered as much as AE.

Planning to build my first PC and I'd also like to buy a Mac Mini/Studio. I'll take Davinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro any day (even tho I've NEVER used them before) over Premiere Pro because you just pay once, it's not subscription based like Premiere Pro. Also, I've heard many times that DR is more stable and less buggy on Mac than on PC so that's a nice bonus. Instead of fighting over PC vs Mac I'll just try both out and have the best of both worlds...

Yup! Final Cut is the best editing software for creative storytellers! It gets the complicated UI nonsense of other systems out of the way and streamlines the entire workflow and editing process. At the same time it’s also a much deeper and feature rich app than one would think at first glance. Premiere has better advertising and has had a ton of features added to it. But I have never enjoyed using it, especially because I’ve lost so many hours of work, it’s frustrating.
@usernamehandle

I hate Adobe, so this is interesting. But I will say that in all fairness, Premiere does have an autosave feature you can enable and set up in Preferences! Can’t remember if it’s on by default, but I would highly recommend using it if you ever need to work in it again. The mag timeline seems really interesting… Working with premiere’s timeline can be really annoying and feel archaic.
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I used the autosave feature with Premiere but it’s not as frequent as FCPX. FCPX is instant so you won’t lose any work at all, but with Premiere you could do a whole chunk before it saves and then it crashes and you’ve just lost all that stuff because the save was maybe 5 minutes ago.

I have a M1 Macbook Pro, and for some reason Final Cut Pro keeps crashing when adding titles and or effects. Just how it handles iPhone HDR and multiple video source and ratios is awful when outputting. On the M1 where the RAM management is slowly killing the SSD is not good. Gonna stick to my Gaming Windows Desktop - 2TB MVME SSD's, 32GB Ram, 4 Output DP Nvidia grahics card all built for $1,200 and Premier (3x better IMO) - where Adobe has made their cloud editing a lot better.

The "QuickTime Gamma Shift" issue, where exported video looks washed out in QuickTime Player, Safari, and Chrome is more of an Apple issue. Adobe uses the standard gamma of 2.4, the television broadcast standard for exported video. FireFox, ironically doesn't suffer from this issue as it doesn't use ColorSync, so video viewed in FireFox would look exactly like how it looks in your Premiere timeline. This long-standing problem can be tackled in three ways: 1. Do nothing: Use the exported video file as-is, knowing that it'll look fine on most TVs and computer displays. 2. Export gamma-corrected video for Mac viewing: Use Adobe's free QuickTime Gamma Compensation LUT on export to make the video look similar to the Premiere timeline in color-managed Mac applications. Which would have an impact on how it's viewed on non Macs. 3. Add contrast to the Premiere timeline: Use an adjustment layer to increase contrast in Premiere, making the exported video look better on computer displays, which use a brighter gamma value. The root of this issue lies in Apple's use of a non-standard gamma value of 1.96 for displaying Rec.709 video, causing the washed-out appearance. This problem won't be resolved until Apple addresses it. For now, video editors can grade for Rec.709, calibrate their displays, and try not to stress over the inconsistency. Yeah, but the constant crashing might be a bit of a deal breaker ^^
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK Жыл бұрын
Yep, I saw a thread about all those solutions, but I didn’t want the inconsistency of videos looking overly saturated or contrasty in some scenarios and not others so FCPX was the best solution, haha. I don’t regret switching at all 😅

How are you dealing with the lack of internal storage on your MacBook? Are you using cloud or transferring data on an external drive? I’ve literally just ordered mine a few days ago, also with 1 TB of storage. After watching your video, I’m now a bit worried I’ve made a mistake 😢
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK 10 ай бұрын
It depends on the size of my project. When I shoot with my A7s III I tend to shoot in 10-Bit 4:22, 4K, Slog3, so the files can get very big. At that point I edit off my external SSD. Otherwise, if my project is smaller because I've used an action camera (even though I still shoot in 4K or 5.3K with a GoPro) then I have enough space.

@@TamaraGabrielUK yep, I asked a whole bunch of people on Reddit what was going on with my footage, they all blamed me. Thanks for confirming this gamut issue is an issue with Premiere. It's so annoying though, especially that you said it was a Mac specific issue. i'm pretty much done with Adobe, there are other Mac specific issues with Photoshop also.

Hi Tamara. I'm relatively new to editing and don't do it that often but have been using Premier and am pretty frustrated with it. Just wondering, if after a few months since this video you still rate FCP?

FCP does crash sometimes (in my experience) but it never loses any work- so its not a big deal at all. Also, it's MASSIVELY important to delete 'Generated Library Files' - Unused from the Library periodically to save space. A project can grow to 500GBs maybe more. Once deleting that and letting FCP render again you can get back down to like 30GBs.
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that’s a massive space saver.

You forgot the main reason. You don't need to pay monthly for it, you buy it once and own it forever. That's the only reason why I'd change to FCP cause I honestly really like premiere pro, I just feel the monthly payments are a ripoff.

This was an issue for me at first too, I realised that you need to delete the generated clip files regularly. Delete the unused ones whilst you’re working and then delete all of them when your project is finished and you don’t want to work in it anymore. You’ll find it in File > Delete Generated Clip Files.

Hey guys!! Great video Tamara! I’m new here and have subscribed too 👌🏼 - I’m buying the MacBook Air M1 2020 (on offer in uk for £800 and not heard a bad thing said about it … today actually (woah doesn’t time fly on KZbin) I heard that Apple owns FCP - I’ll be honest here. I am a hobbyist drone pilot - looking to create cinematic videos and aerial photography and fed up with editing on free apps on my iPhone 13 Pro or old iPad 10.5” - CapCut (it’s ok and serves a purpose for home viewing) … but I’m hoping to get a website made, offer my drone skills, plus learn the MacBook, and Final Cut Pro - obviously I have to purchase that too so it won’t all be at once … how easy is it to add music? Colour grading? I think I’ll be ok around the MacBook with having iPhones since the 5 came out … does FCP have music to get me started before having to download epidemic sounds? I have lots to pay out for - MacBook, editing software, website etc etc - it’s going to be a steep learning curve. Thank you for the video Tamara - you’re great!! 😊 (any tips from anyone would be so useful please, tia) I have to admit, this may as well be French to me at the moment, but I hope I’ll get there 😊

Sorry, I missed this somehow. Thanks for subscribing! 😊 In terms of free music, KZbin has a free music library that you can check out, but other than that, I don't really know of any. Audio Jungle used to do free music years ago, but I don't know if they still do.
