I know a Resolve fans will be disappointed I didn't give it any attention, but I have good reasons. 1. I don't know any editors working at a high level that are using it full time. I'm sure they're out there, but I don't know one. 2. Version 15 completely crashes when I try to playback and of my raw footage, so I moved to the public beta of 16 and although it doesn't crash, it still doesn't support the AVC footage from my C200. The fact that my mainstream workflow is unusable in Resolve means I can't take it seriously yet. In the next 5 years Resolve will take a ton of market share and might even pull ahead of the others, but it's just not there in 2019.

What do you mean by doesn't supprt AVC footage. (By which I think you mean Canons XF-AVC) That and all other flavours of AVC are fully supported by the studio version. If you work in H.264 (AVC) or H.265 you should probably be using the studio version because of the broader compatibility and especially the much much faster hardware decoding support. That is one of the main ways davinci uses to sell their studio version after all ;) (Also resolve can run even faster with NVDEC and NVENC in the studio version if you use a Windows machine, so for all Windows users it is even more appealing)

@@MegaWeitzel Good to know that it requires the studio version, but I don't really have enough other needs for the studio version to justify purchasing it. I'm definitely not knocking Resolve, it's just not at the same play as the FPC and PP yet.

@@stalman How do arrive at the conclusion that it is not at the same level yet? I mean we don't need to argue that the color grading in DR is more powerfull. It is basically industry standard for that. Fusion while not yet at After Effects Level is way better than anything FCPX has And Fair Light is arguably an audio suit maybe only matched by AVID Which leaves the NLE part, what is there missing for you? For me it seems like just as good an NLE as the others. But maybe I am missing something I don't use. Also the speed improvements alone over Adobe Premiere make it worth it for most windows users (FCPX is equally fast) And all that at 300$, which is in line with FCPX and cheaper than adobe premiere. So again what is holding you back?

True, but it won't help you choose a software. Also you can never make professional editing with imovie or moviemaker. You need Avid, Premiere, FInal Cut or Vegas Pro in order to do that. But as long as it is one of those top tier, then you are good.

I love how you got input from different editors on this. I can tell Adobe Premier has features I probably would want in FCPX, but the ease of use of the latter and its speed just can't be beat. I feel like Jonathan said - if you're on a Mac there's just no reason not to use FCPX. One thing you rarely hear acknowledged is that the FCPX is basically the older version of iMovie on steroids. What's questionable is why Apple then went and destroyed iMovie. There were lots of frustrated people when that happened.

You're exactly right. I think a lot of people (established pros) were really hesitant to accept it in part because of how simplified it is. In Premiere Pro, you can really dial things in. Keyframes, masks, tracking, lumetri scopes, exporting with Encoder, etc. It's a very capable software. But to new content creators? It can be daunting. FCPX is easy to learn, you get a lot of pro features, and best of all, it's optimized. Premiere locks up, crashes, and the exports are comparatively slow. FCPX is quick and efficient. You don't even have to save your projects. It does that for you. It's ridiculously effortless.

We switched from Adobe Premiere to Final Cut Pro X, and the difference in speed, ease of use and just overall look of the app is so much better. Adobe is sitting on an old code base and that may be its biggest problem, as opposed to FCPX which was completely overhauled and though had some hiccups initially, it is now such a robust application

FCPX is designed based on a story telling workflow. While premiere , gives you all the tools and let it to you to do whatever you want with it. For me I like the FCPX clean and simple look. However, premiere just throws everything on the screen and you just need to know what you want to do if not it does not appeal to a person to do something with it. FCPX is like, “hey come do something with me load a video and make a story...” Premiere is like “ hey! so whatever you going to do just do it” I hope you get my drift.

They both do the same thing for the most part, but they offer different workflows to accomplish those tasks. Whichever workflow makes more sense to you, that's the one you should pick. I used to use Final Cut Pro for all our KZbin videos when I worked for a guitar store, edited over 600 on it over the course of a couple of yrs. literally wouldn’t be able to do that in premiere at the speed I had to edit them. Now I have went freelance I use Premiere Pro for all my projects, I prefer the multi cam clip functions and the layering in a non magnetic timeline. I feel it works better for the more polished projects that need finer tweaking. Both have their pros and cons but just pick what you prefer and works for you .

I am a wedding photographer/videographer. I have been a wedding photographer since 2014, but wanted to dab around video side of things at around 2019, used premiere pro till 2021 on my pc (I was okay-ish at it). I soon felt the need of an editing laptop on the go. Bought meself a Macbook pro 2017. Still on premiere pro, I was quite happy with it. Since I had a Macbook, I thought, why not give Final Cut Pro a chance, although I was not serious about it, FCP felt so easy that I just could not go back to premiere pro. In simple words, for me at the least, things in FCP are placed where they are supposed to be and within 2 months of switching to FCP, my workflow sped up by a mile. Got the Macbook air M1 (best purchase of my life), never regretted the switch.

Couldn't agree more with Thomas's assessment - the software just gets out of your way so you can get in the flow. LOVE it for that. Any time I edited in FCP7/Premiere Pro I'm constantly bumping up against the application (dropped frames, clip collisions when revising, crashes, and NO ability to smoothly and easily organize the footage before I started editing) and losing my flow. If you shoot a lot of documentary or commercial work that has a lot of interviews, you'd be NUTS not to go with FCPX. The Magnetic Timeline, Multi-Cams, and all of the amazing things you can do to organize and log your footage (Favorites, Keywords, etc.) has saved me countless hours and significantly improved the quality of the finished video. FCPX all the way!

Midland Pictures how does that work without having layered tracks? Curious how you go about layering your broll over an interview. Are you having to cut the interview and add the broll? Seems harder to move stuff around. I’ve never used fcpx so I’m genuinely curious (and could be wrong about the layered tracks). I’m also a doc filmmaker so I’m surprised to hear fcpx over premiere.

​@Amanda Horvath With the Magnetic Timeline you do get something that approximates tracks - the main difference is they're not locked in - they flow and adapt as your edit progresses. And there are a number of things you can do to clips above the main "track" of your timeline/sequence to enhance that experience (Secondary Storylines, Clip Connections, Compound Clips). As far as b-roll over an interview goes, I layer it above my interview footage similar to how you would in Premiere. And it's actually much, much easier to move stuff around, especially when you use Secondary Storylines, know the key command to be able to move your Clip Connections, and use Compound Clips (which is like Nested clips in PP). The tracks in Premiere, for me, are more of an obstacle to me getting in the "flow" - with FCPX I feel like I'm always thinking of something I want to do and then just easily doing it where with Premiere I'm always managing some kind of resistance with it. I felt the same way when I made the switch to Affinity Designer from Illustrator. This tutorial is VERY old, but Larry Jordan does a good job of explaining the core concepts of the Magnetic Timeline and demonstrating how it works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYiWq4Rol75rqbM Best part is he's editing in Standard Def! FCPX now, by the way, has a much fresher, modern skin to the UI (although the UI is pretty much the same). The real magic with documentary editing is how FCPX lets you organize all of your footage. ESPECIALLY interviews. I use Favoriting to mark up interview clips and enter notes that summarize what the interviewee is saying. I actually have my assistant editor do all of that, and when I sit down to edit I can read those notes and see what questions were asked so I can spend my time building the story instead of playing back the interviews and grabbing chunks and sending them all down to the timeline and then try to organize it all in the timeline (like I have to do with PP and FCP7). Or, even worse, sending the entire interview down to the timeline and cutting it all up and removing the parts I don't need, then doing another pass and cutting out more, rinse and repeat. Sometimes I layer b-roll in as I go, sometimes I wait until I have a pretty solid story using the interviewees and THEN add b-roll in over the top. The bottom line is the software HELPS me tell stories ... instead of creating friction - dealing with the UI, clunky organization, a bunch of stuff to move and arrange if I want to move a section of a video up 2 mins in the edit, etc. etc. This reply is already way too long! I use FCPX with motion (and other Apple pro apps) for 4 reasons: 1. no subscription. I paid once and now get all updates to the software for free. 2. Macs with nVidia graphics (like my 2014 MacBook Pro) are no longer fully supported by Adobe with Premiere 2019 whereas Final Cut supports it fully and without any problems. 3. I can edit 4k video with some pretty extensive edits with much better performance on said MacBook Pro without a major loss of performance. 4. The biggest problem I had with Adobe was with it creating a hidden cache of many of my projects in the hidden library directory that wouldn't clear out unless I manually did it and took up almost half of my hard drive.

This feels one of the most honest comparisons between these two NLEs, amazing to see first hand point of views from people that use it in full blown professional productions. I have used mostly After Effects for over a decade (not Premiere) and have been wanting to dive in FCPX and Motion full-on, got most of the recommended plugins out there from MotionVFX, Red Giant Suite part that happens to be compatible with FCPX, FxFactory, etc... but man, I just can’t get in the flow most of the time, I’m trying to not fight the magnetic timeline, dropping a few titles here or there becomes an issue after a few stacked clips (navigation wise for me), dropping vs connecting clips from the browser, etc... I’m seriously having a hard time the few times I have wanted to use it. The inspector for changing settings feels sluggish/slow... the transform/distort/etc tool good jesus... Some things are amazing though, the fonts and text handling and the way most plugins hook into it, the way audio ‘trails’ can be left by just expanding and extending the audio part of a clip and fading it with the ready to use fader handlers at the edge of the clips. Motion I haven’t used it as much, but the fact that there’s no concept of ‘pre-comps’ is a huge negative, however it’s amazing to create Transitions/Titles/Effects that will magically work in FCPX, plus the whole suite of Behaviours, Replicators, Particles... I don’t know, I’m seriously torn... will continue to explore it whenever opportunities arise since I really want to master it little by little but can’t help but do a big frowned face when wanting to do some custom animations, expand the ‘animation curves’ (if you can all them that!) and add some keyframes on... that thing... The maps animations shown on the Vox Borders though, for sure I wouldn’t risk it doing them in FCPX/Motion just yet... definitely would just attack it on After Effects and deal with the render times. The cost component for some creators is a big part of the equation. FCPX one time cost is a huge money saver, plus the fact that you can scale it to as many machines as you want. The other aspect to consider is FCPX plugin market is very robust and varied. Premiere is a more capable program but adobe keeps focusing on high-end features rather than just overall speed and stability. I hope the new optimizations they have been doing continue.

I'm a FCPX editor and it's amazing and super fast for personal films, events and things you want done fast but even with my bias, I can see some things that could make premiere better for some of those longer projects that aren't at all chronologically based like a documentary. Final Cut Pro just has to release a new setting so we can choose between forced (connected) timeline or flexible timeline. I also switched from Premiere, and it is frustrating when you have 3 video clip layers and three audio tracks. If you decide to remove a video track, it could remove all of them, depending which one is attached to which. frustrating at times.

I think it really does just come down to how you work and what you feel looks and acts right. For me Premiere looks exactly how I imagine editing videos. I have Final Cut and Resolve and I have a cursory understanding of how to navigate them BUT when I open it and look at it...it just doesn't inspire confidence. Also I've used Premiere for 3 years and have had almost no issues and certainly nothing major. Whatever you use, use it and love it....and be kind to your tools :)

I hear where Premier editors like Johnny are coming from when their way of working doesn't feel like it integrates well with the more linear-focused merits of the magnetic timeline... though more and more FCPX editors are beginning to realize you can just drop a long blank generator in the spine and use it as a static pin-cushion to stack all your clips onto, making it feel a little more like Premiere. If you're cutting a linear vlog, you have the option of ripping through and taking full advantage of how the magnetic timeline was intended to work... but if I'm cutting a non-linear trailer where I'm jumping all over the place for example, I might stack shots 15 clips high on a null generator, building something that resembles a giant lego castle of blocks in the timeline. I think Jonathan edits like that from time to time too, depending on the project. I know he and others catch flack for editing like that (because part of the FCPX community thinks they're not using the magnetic timeline "correctly"), but it works really well for non-linear edits. From there, it boils down to the underlying efficiency of the codebase... and being able to stabilize clips in seconds rather than minutes is what saves me the most time on a day-to-day basis. Hi Tyler, great video. I'm a FCPX editor and I have a Mac, but recently I have found myself doing a lot of research into Premiere and heavily analyzing the pros and cons of one and the other one. Honestly FCPX give me everything I need in order to get the job done, however when it comes to the integration of AE with FCPX and Premiere I keep finding in my research that it is probably better to use Premiere if one is using a lot AE. I wish in the video Thomas would’ve gotten more into how FCPX works with AE. Maybe it is in the full interviews. I'll take a look at those. Either way, amazing stuff man, your channel is incredible helpful! Thanks for all your work.

Arturo Rivera That’s indeed a very underrated topic that barely anybody talks about today. I’d love to use AE with FCPX but I really don’t know where to get started. I guess rendering the files e.g. in 4K and then popping then into FCPX. There’s also Motion but that’s not nearly as popular, nor as powerful.

Currently switching to FCPX after years on Premiere and really excited about the potential. The magnetic timeline, although intimidating to learn, is actually making my workflow a lot quicker. It's also great to have no overwriting. Have been getting frustrated with constant crashing and bugs in Premiere and also the color issues upon export if you're not coloring on a REC709 calibrated monitor. FCPX is a breath of fresh air. Also the fixed price of FCPX is nice.

Biggest issue I have in FCPx is there is no audio crossfade keyboard shortcut. This is a basic task that happens many times during an edit, but for some reason Apple has kept that out of the application. I’m wondering if anyone else minds that issue.

The integration with after effects and even Photoshop is what made me pick premiere over final cut. Tha dynamic link feature is so convenient. I dont have to waste any time rendering anything in After Effects to put it in premiere. Same with Photoshop. If I have to make a change on a graphic, I can just make the change and hit save and the change will show in premiere.

Editor here. It's just a tool, the craft hasn't and won't change. Now, if you want to make a living off of editing, learn what your location primarily uses. I'm in the Bay Area and Premiere is dominant in most post houses or agencies. I've yet to go to a house that has FCPX or Avid as their main NLE. If I moved to LA, I would need to adjust to Avid. If you're freelancing in the comfort of your own studio, use whatever you like. I started with FCP7, made the jump to Premiere. Tried FCPX and did not like it lol...

Great review Tyler! As a FCPX and Motion user I'd be curious to hear a bit more of the limitations Johnny had with FCPX/Motion. The animations I saw are all achievable with Motion. Totally understandable for personal preference and there's a lot of things I like about Premiere and After Effects. It's great to have all these editing options.
