Parrot Waving Hello While Free flying Outside

Practicing outside today with Kiwis high-fives and waving hello. When I make a specific whistle or call him by his name is how I have trained him to come back on demand.
Letting a bird be a bird that’s not caged up all the time is what I feel is right as a bird owner. There are risks with free flying through its a risk im willing to take to allow him to have the best life possible! Feeling free, lots of exercise and will always come back as he’s bonded to us. He also loves his food too much to defend for him self…. Haha

Aaaaw little Kiwi 💙 So precious the way he waves. The only thing about letting him fly freely outside is the possibility of other predator birds spotting him. Hopefully there are no hawks around your area.

Yes I agree. We have Hawks & Eagles here that have taken peoples cats and small dogs even. He's so lovely. It is nice to see him actually out flying. Not many people can do that with their pet birds.

Oml. Seeing him flying free was amazing -- and also gave me mild anxiety. There's so many horror stories of birds of prey snatching pets and even more stories of pet birds that got spooked and flew too far away to find their way home on their own. May Gaia keep little Kiwi safe on his adorable flying adventures

It is important if he does fly away accidently, that he knows where to go. The scary one was when he flew out for Halloween in the new home. But he made his way back. As far as a bird of prey, they would be too instinctually cautious to think it was a trap. But you can't go out everyday at the same time, as then bird of prey would get more emboldened.

@@11matt11 birds of prey are extremely fast, some can fly faster than 100km per hour. I see them everyday from my 24th floor balcony. They attack flying pigeons in seconds with no mercy. Some escape but end up totally disable and hurt, so I take them to be put down so their suffering ends. Very few survive but walk very crippled or with an abnormal painful wing. It's very sad. I wouldn't risk my pet bird if I were his owner, I would use a big net enclosure if possible or a long leash for birds. May God protect Kiwi.

So true. It appears only you and I, too few, think this way. I'll hitch a ride on yours reposting my comment here: Tamara is an incredible compassionate bird mom. And I too give my birds free flight. But my concern with Kiwi flying free is if his bird-call is not native to the area. I don't know what birds fly the skies in Nova Scotia, but a voice like Kiwi has, if parrots are not native, would signal other birds to swarm and attack. It could be a swarm of crows to falcons or hawks or an eagle. All of them predators. It just takes one hawk, to snatch Kiwi in flight - happens within moments - and fly away with Kiwi in its talons, Kiwi helpless and doomed. What would Tamara do if witnessing that? I am sure in that moment mom would offer her heart be ripped out in exchange, it would kill her. And all of us. Kiwi is not confined to a cage indoors, so free flight is safe within the house. He is not deprived of exercise. Where else might Kiwi fly new heights safely? Is there an indoor sports arena nearby, that would be a HUGE enclosed space, safe for Kiwi to fly free without any chance of hazard. What are some other ideas? With the fame Kiwi has, I think Mom could convince anyone to allow Kiwi entrance, promising to film and post the video, so their venue also gets publicity. I would rather see Kiwi flying free in an empty enclosed skating rink and such, than nervously watch Kiwi in the wild outdoors, with my one eye opened, one eye closed with my fingers crossed holding my breath. It is simply too big a risk NOT worth taking. Now that we've seen Kiwi flying outdoors, we don't need to see any more videos like this one. Please post your ideas of all the interesting enclosed SAFE places Kiwi could fly free within, that with the inclusion of interviewing the owners and other participants, make for really socially interesting videos. I don't know where you're located and your love and training of this lovely bird is impeccable. Beware of predator birds. I breed Chihuahuas, I am aware of them. They swoop down silently. I took care of my sis's prize Maltese for a week, out walking with my ( large) dogs..running in field. Out of corner of my eye, I saw him coming from above..got to the Maltese just as the hawk clawed his back.. knocked it off and saved the dog. Never been so frightened.

No, don’t give up!! Budgies love attention and I talk to mine at least 4 or 5 times a day, for about 5 to 10 minutes depending on what I’m doing. I won’t have to do that forever once they’re trained. They know my voice, and look for me. The most important time is first thing in the morning. One of my budgies fusses until I talk to them, and then he settles into playing and exploring for the day. But I have also trained him to stop, even if I’m in another room. “Stop”!! And he does, for maybe 15 mins. He stops completely when I talk to him. When you talk to them repeat the words you want them to remember in an exaggerated voice like people talk to babies. They love the cadence and recognize that’s the love talk. “MumMum loves you. I love you. You’re my big boys. Kiss kiss (Muah sound). You’re my birdsteins. My darling boys, I love you.) I say this repeatedly. They know the different sounds of my voice; when I’m loving, when I’m firm and want them to stop, etc. I let them out everyday and they have set up a time when they want to be back in their cages. I close the door to the room they’re in, open the window because they like to climb the screen and sit on the ledge and watch birds and people outside. They tend to stay in their territory.. They think they’re outside. If I’m reading, etc, I lie down near them. That way they think of me as part of their family. I know when they need to see me because they’ll chirp loud as if calling me. Once in a while, they’ll fly in a circle around me as if they want me to get up and fly too Yeah, right.🙄 That won’t be happening Now, I’m no genius. I picked all of this up off KZbin and it’s working. They are trying very hard to talk. Their little mouths are working like crazy to vocalize, but no sounds yet. . I got them when they were young. Their little mouths works alongside with whatever I’m saying, they are repeating it. When their vocal cords mature more, they’ll be talking eventually and will already know words. No time? That’s okay. I taped musuc they love and intersperse it with my voice talking to them. It plays on a loop. They’re looking for me, but eventually think I’m in the other room. Hope this helps. Budgies are more timid that parrots, but they are so expressive. They keep me laughing at their communication with each other when playing.

I absolutely love budgies, and i let my budgie out of his cage regularly, he loves to fly around, but we always leave his cage open so he can go back in whenever he wants to. 💕 Whenever im in the same room as him, and he gets a bit lonely, he jumps from his perch onto the cage bars, and starts moving his head from side to side. Its so adorable!! i think we got him somewhere around the age of 6 weeks? Im not sure. But we thought he was just dancing when he was younger, but now we know that its his way of calling us, and saying 'come here'!

Kiwi is awesome and so happy! It's amazing to see the training you've done with him. Come when called/whistled is such an important command for any of our pets to learn. Kiwi's feathers are gorgeous. In some videos they are so smooth it looks like blue skin. ❤️❤️

It's so wonderful to see Kiwi fly so effortlessly and at the same time enjoy home comfort. Just make sure that you never leave Kiwi alone or fly near by tree when a group of parrots are around. The other parrots tend to perceive anyone outside of their group as a threat and hence may even possibly attack him. I am telling this from an experience of raising 3 parrots in the past.

It's not other parrots you need to worry about. It's raptors that might decide to snatch him. It's wonderful to let our parrots fly free outside, but understand that it comes with very real dangers.

Other wild birds in general are liable to charge at a loose parrot. One of our conures flew to me as I was stepping outside a couple years ago and she found out the hard way that the local birds are assholes. She went flying around the trees in the back yard looking for a place to land and ended up on a neighbor's bush the next lot over. I had to follow the sound of conure trilling to find her, and she gripped the strap of my shirt pretty tight all the way back inside.

@@Kaidona Agreed. These are not wild-raised parrots, taught by their parents how to navigate the dangers of their indigenous environment. They are domesticated pets. While it's wonderful to let them fly, there has to be some serious management of that for their own safety.

I LOVE KIWI! 🤗 I never cage my birds.. they're all free range in my house and enjoy flying from window to window or their nesting area room, but this made me hold my breath the whole video. 😖 Birds get spooked VERY easily and if he saw something different he could easily become disoriented.. I've had that happened to a friend who lost his cockatiel that way. 😬 I also had a friend who had a cockatoo sitting on her shoulder outside on her patio. A hawk actually flew down and nabbed the bird. Thank goodness the hawk lost it's grip and the cockatoo rolled down the roof. 😖 Traumatized but ok. All it takes is ONE time. Birds of prey are incredibly smart and watch patterns. PLEASE rethink this for Kiwi's sake. 🙏 ❤

So true. It appears only you and I, too few, think this way. I'll hitch a ride on yours reposting my comment here: Tamara is an incredible compassionate bird mom. And I too give my birds free flight. But my concern with Kiwi flying free is if his bird-call is not native to the area. I don't know what birds fly the skies in Nova Scotia, but a voice like Kiwi has, if parrots are not native, would signal other birds to swarm and attack. It could be a swarm of crows to falcons or hawks or an eagle. All of them predators. It just takes one hawk, to snatch Kiwi in flight - happens within moments - and fly away with Kiwi in its talons, Kiwi helpless and doomed. What would Tamara do if witnessing that? I am sure in that moment mom would offer her heart be ripped out in exchange, it would kill her. And all of us. Kiwi is not confined to a cage indoors, so free flight is safe within the house. He is not deprived of exercise. Where else might Kiwi fly new heights safely? Is there an indoor sports arena nearby, that would be a HUGE enclosed space, safe for Kiwi to fly free without any chance of hazard. What are some other ideas? With the fame Kiwi has, I think Mom could convince anyone to allow Kiwi entrance, promising to film and post the video, so their venue also gets publicity. I would rather see Kiwi flying free in an empty enclosed skating rink and such, than nervously watch Kiwi in the wild outdoors, with my one eye opened, one eye closed with my fingers crossed holding my breath. It is simply too big a risk NOT worth taking. Now that we've seen Kiwi flying outdoors, we don't need to see any more videos like this one. Please post your ideas of all the interesting enclosed SAFE places Kiwi could fly free within, that with the inclusion of interviewing the owners and other participants, make for really socially interesting videos. I have a cockatiel that was someone's pet bird that they lost outside. Looked for her owner and got a few calls about male birds, but no females, so here she is lol It's sad it seemed no one was looking for her.

I live in Australia, and someone had lost a pet cockatoo - it was way up high in a gumtree over the neighbor's yard, I remember watching it all day until the owner could come and coax him down. We knew it was special, because it acted so tame and just stayed there. I forget how we got in touch with the owner... I think we called the local radio station and the owner got the message lol

@@MattExzy It was cold outside when I found her. She stepped right up onto my hand. I was going to take her to our local humane society but they're ill-equipped for birds and overcrowded. Instead, I called their lost and found and put a notice on our local facebook lost and found pets page. She's quite the little personality, so I just had to make a place for her here in my home for elderly and abandoned animals lol. I also have an elderly papillon and two cats from a feral colony that became very friendly and adoptable. Add several fish that are also rescues...I have a small domesticated zoo lol My sisters call me "Dr. Doolittle."

He was properly trained by an experienced mentor. Freeflight is not where you just release your bird outside and play, it requires a lot of training and many ups and downs. I’m sure the owner knows how to take precautions against predatory birds.

I love to see Kiwi fly! My 1st lovebird 25 years ago, I did what u are doing with Kiwi. I lived kinda in the laid back area in Kailua town, on Oahu. Of course, no more country there in this day, and I'm in the city. I don't know what really made me feel it was safe back then. I think it was that there was more open space and the communication between my bird and I was so good that the trust and bond with each other was so embedded between us. U are so wonderful with Kiwi💕 I just love yours and Kiwi's interaction. As the saying goes : Birds of a feather, flock together. That goes for the human/ bird connection, as well! You've got it 💫
