Tame Iti on being bullied, Tuhoe Raids and being a father

He describes himself as colonised, yet stood four times for parliament. Tame Iti is a teetotalling, vegan, cyclist and doting koro - a former radio DJ with a thing for house music. Moana Maniapoto sits down with him in this special little interview.

So incredibly happy to see Tame is getting the recognition he deserves and sharing his story through his beautiful art. Only met him twice, once when he knocked on our door (in Ponsonby) looking for his sons girlfriends house, next door. And again later when he was incarcerated (it was for the Tuhoe raids). Not a tall man but he exudes mana and had a very peaceful aura actually. Was there the same time as Yakuza members…couldn’t help noticing the similarities. Small stature and many body tattoo. Was an impressive day for me. Please treasure and protect Tame. Record his stories well for future generations by which time Te Reo Maori has been normalised in Aotearoa. 🥰🥰
