We can speak and must speak about Bombay Municipal corporation, which from an early date, when India was less rich, cared a minimum for their rich architectural and cultural heritage. Bombay or Mumbai is also and even more prone to goondas and dark activities than Chennai or Tamil Nadu. But they have managed to protect a minimum, and today, with better governance and funding, they restored (and not "renovating") even more buildings and awarn people of city heritage. Bombay is today a proud full city that outside bollywood and economy, can show to the world how it had been an important and crucial place in the past global history. It city centre is a world heritage site now, and its colonial and modern architecture (art deco) appreciated all over the world. At a state level we can't forget Rajasthan or even recently Gujarat, which benefit from a more heritage educated/valuing/enthusiast people, but also of Modis patronage (Vadnagar is a candidate for world heritage, and many Gujarati sites achieved to become a world heritage site last years). Many historians enthusiats and art specialists also says that Madras, or Chennai, have been a very interesting and a charming place. But succeeding governments did not much or nothing to preserve it. Outside of big government buildings, there is day by day fewer private with historically and architectural value. UNESCO itself criticised how Tamil Nadu HRCE is ruining the historical and artistic integrity of most temples of Tamil Nadu.

you are true karna . the castle built by French Engineer only because I belong to Karaikal region (Puducherry state) . so, lot of castle is now karaikal as same model for eg. KARAIKAL DISTRICT COLLECTOR OFFICE . as french model castle is now working as District Collector office .. thanks

Karaikal was looking like Pondicherry Old Town those days,... But now, most of it has been ruined due to general apathy for heritage and city pride.. I also suspect a Pondicherian favourable government that didn't care much for Karaikal. I openly speak about the real estate/land mafia, with it's important goondas groups, killings, intimidation, paper forgery, and many other crimes they are still doing here. Many landlords and heritage buildings owning people, let all go in dust and escape that "vanderi" cove, unfortunately.
