When I met the children, they were playing.(not mentioning the period of time). When I met the children ,they had been playing for 2 hours(mentioning the period of time) I think this is the difference between two tenses

I had been practicing as an advocate at district court in Srivilliputtur. I had been living at Triumullaivoyal before I bought a flat at Tambaram. My son had been studying in Sainik school before he joined the college. Jamuna and I had been working in law dept before she was promoted as Assistant Section Officer now she is working in Highways dept. .

Mam could you please explain this sentence The clerk who had served in police department for 30 years, retired from service yesterday. Does this mean The rule which you said that for past perfect in this video like There was a gap between his retirement (that is yesterday) and for the period he had been serving as a clerk

@@marshmellow7210 No no, what I said was that there's a possibility of the past period of time not extending till the past point of time. Not necessary that it has to be like that all the time. In the sentence that you have written, the past perfect tense can also be replaced by the past perfect continuous with the same meaning.

Not correct. If you are still living in the area, you should use the present perfect continuous tense to talk about it.
