@@ArnelsEverydayEnglish I can see crucial in-class techniques being not only used, but evolved to a whole new level by the use of technology, such as modeling and some mini-drills. I highly value teaching technique. In my country, almost all English courses/schools are not building teachers; they just want "ready-to-go teachers". Students constantly tell me my classes are better than my workmates and I don't like it. There's no pattern at all. :( Has teaching changed to worse in your countries, guys? I started to study 20 years ago, in an old method, with less resources but with teachers with much more technique, gladness, productivity and efficiency.

You have no idea, Spanish is way more complex when it comes to tenses and conjugations. If fact English is a very practical language keeping in mind how complex other languages are. The thing that it differs a lot from Spanish or other languages, but if you focus on similiraties rather than differences, you will figure how easy learning English with the correct mindset, approach and guidance. Don't give up you will get it one day for sure and always repeat " English is easy" cause it actually is.

Thank you, Arnel, for such a great lesson! Very clear and profound explanation! Can you please explain, why do we use in the sentence №10 (I was advertising / I had been advertising for months before I got my first customer) Past Perfect Continuous (had been advertising)? I got the point that we want to emphasize a long duration of the process of the advertising, but for most businesses, as far as I know, the process of advertising doesn't end after getting the first customer, so, in that case, action of getting the first customer is happening during the process of the advertising (it interrupts it, but doesn't stop and in that case we can only use Past Continuous)?
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! If the past perfect continuous is an interrupted action, it may continue after the interruption. It really depends on the context. And normally with the past continuous, the duration isn't mentioned. Hope this helps :)

Hello, Teacher Arnel! Greetings from Philippines. I got 7/8. My mistake is on number 5. Thank you for this lesson. It helped me understand the difference of the two tenses. ❤️

8/8 I'd say number 5 could be both. Both make sense. Wasn't using = at that moment Hadn't been using = for some days, /weeks/ months. The question is: Is it necessary to make the duration explicit everytime we use past perfect continuous? In this case, I would say the duration could be an implicit information.

Great job on the test Warlie! I'm so happy this lesson made things clear:) For #5, both sentences could be correct depending on the context. 😬 The reply to this comment by Carlos is a good explanation.

Oh! I see. The truth is I'm confused while answering to it. I'm also thinking it could be both but it's because I'm not confident with it so I believe Teacher Arnel's answer. 😅 By the way Carlos and Teacher Arnel, thanks again! ❤️

Hi Arnel, Can the past continuous stand alone in a sentence without the past simple? Ex- "I was editing a video." Is it correct or should it be, "I was editing a video when Maggie called me"? AND "Julia was cooking for two hours." Can we use duration with the past continuous? Is it correct or incorrect?

Of course you can use the past perfect alone, but if you are going to write something else in the same sentence it must be in past simple. Example I was studying. I was studying while I talked to my brother Can we use duration with the past continuous? Of course again, but the meaning is a little different. Julia was cooking for two hours. this means: she finished to cook (we don't know the time, but she finished it) Julia had been cooking for two hours Julia maybe still cooking at the time when we say this sentence, I mean she could keep cooking. we don't know, remember past perfect continuous is an action which may continue or not that depends on the context and the situation.

As always, a very clear and useful video. I notice that English learners often overuse the past perfect/past perfect continuous, so hopefully, this lesson clears up any questions about when to use it. 👏👏

Can't we use Past perfect with Past continuous and Past perfect continuous with Past Continuous 🌼🌼🌼= 1) while i was coming home , She had gone. 2) while she was going home her husband had been going to pharmacy.
@LearnAcademicEnglish
@LearnAcademicEnglish 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-jd2oj1ez1p Neither of these make sense to me. If you use "while," you should use continuous to show that two things happened at the same time. While I was coming home, she was leaving. While she was going home, her husband was going to the pharmacy.
