Both songs worship the motherland as a goddess. But Sri Lanka got lucky with single digit population of peaceful community. India unfortunately had 15% of them

I am Indian. Bengali. Keeping aside our national anthem the national anthem of Srilanka really touches my soul. Tamil version I do not understand but almost 60% of original song I understand as it consists of so many words borrowed from Sanskrit. But the music is too good. One more thing, I have an interest in listening national anthem of several countries and I have noticed most of them is based on military tune and praise their revolution, struggle, king and queen, might, religion etc. Whereas national anthem of India, Srilanka and Bangladesh says about their motherland, it's natural beauty and richness and national integrity. I love people of Srilanka except very few cricketer like Sanat Jayasuriya, Aurovinda D'Silva, Arjun Ranatunga and few more of their time as they were really a nightmare for our country in the cricket ground.... Never mind. I love them too. Great players.

In my entire school career in Jaffna at Vembadi Girl's High school or in Colombo at Ladies college did I ever sing the national anthem in Tamil. I would have sung this anthem over a hundred times but always in Sinhalese and never dreamt to questioned why the Tamil language was not worthy of the country's anthem. That is how subjugated we were by the old political order.. On the 68th year of Independence the national anthem has become a reality in Tamil and I salute the country for this.

+NideshPahath . The national anthem needs only to be in two languages in Sri lanka Tamil and Sinhalese. With independence English became obsolete. By allowing the Tamils to sing the anthem in Tamil would have increased a sense of patriotism and national identity. It may not have stopped the war as the Singhala only policy had set that trajectory in motion in 1958. We cannot be compared to India which maintained English as a working language even after independence and sings its national anthem in Bengali which was not the majority language.Our country should have given equal status to both languages. More Tamils learnt to speak Singhala than Sinhalese learnt Tamil. If we had maintained the importance of both languages then the channel of communication between the two races might have allowed us to understand our deepest desires better.

National anthem is being sung in Tamil since we got the independence. I was a member of my school national anthem choir and accustomed to listen and sing in Tamil language since my child hood. It was printed on the front page in all Tamil medium school books. I didn’t get an opportunity to listen this anthem in Tamil last few years. I really became nostalgic when hear this anthem in Tamil at 68th independent celebration. If the national anthem had been sung since the beginning only in singhala language I would say it should be continued as it is. I express my dismay on the attempts for banning to sing in Tamil language, which is being sung since the beginning. It’s like to ask a Tamil guy to call “thatha(Father)” instead of calling “appa”. Very moving to listen to this version of the anthem. Being only lingual in Tamil, this version brings renewed meaning and patriotism. What we fail to see that language aside, we share the same divine devotion to our motherland.
