I finally watched your course today, Sunday afternoon, and I actually got it. Additionally, I understood how the heliopause and bow shocks work. How fascinating that Earth's magnetosphere and the sun's heliosphere react the same. But then it stands to reason as they're both magnetic. In spite of my cat Delta pestering me, I got a lot out of this podcast. It's tempting me to take that space weather course from Millersville, even though I'm retired and have no need to learn about that. I find it absolutely fascinating. Please keep up your good work.

I finally got around to watching this video. What absolutely fascinating material! Thanks for mentioning whistlers and other ELF radio noises. I didn't realize that those ultra-low frequencies were sometimes amplified by these magnetospheric disturbances by solar storms. I would like to buy an ELF receiver and walk far from electrical lines to hear these amazing signals. The next time the magnetosphere gets squished by a solar storm, I'd be likely to be outside picking those signals up. By the way, there's a 4-CD set of these noises you can buy. I've forgotten the title but it features the most energetic of these waves.

Thanks so much. I have had the catastrophe contagion for about 5 years and have literally changed my life concerning it. Your presentation allows for the rarity of these events, but they do happen and can be devastating. There is evidence all over the world of civilization ending events and if it is coming anytime soon, nobody knows. Thanks again for your prestigious work and effort!

His "tone?" Not sure I understand what that means.

@@TamithaSkov it sounded a bit like when Ben's pretty sure he's right & someone says he's wrong. A bit more authoritative in delivery, like, "if you don't understand, don't assume" carried in the delivery

@NowanAtoll Ahh. When it comes to the weakening field, everything is speculation. We do not know exactly what form the overall magnetic field configuration is going to take so I have to tread lighty. There are models, but models can be wrong, even if they are state of the art.

Maibe the reason is a grand solar minima, not global warming. Maibe better protection from solar events... But is obvious they know something we don't! 😁 Thank you so much for education Dr. Skov🙏❣️

As far as I know, it does. We've seen in other courses that the layers of Earth's magnetosphere get peeled back but they always reform once the solar storm has done its work.

Not sure why you don't think a Creighton event won't take out our grid? If this happens we cannot fix it for 6 months or much longer because we don't have backup plans. It's the people you have to worry about they will become very bad to get what they need.

Carrington events are rare and we're much better prepared these days. The Quebec power grid wasn't prepared and suffered that melt down. Even so, being prepared with back-up transformers would make sense. Of course it only seems sensible to us but not power company pencil pushers. Here's an idea. Let's get an art grant and build a power transformer as a work of modern art.
