One of your many strengths is that you take the time to share your reasoning for the various options that you have considered for your builds. This allows future modelers to understand the various pros/cons of the available options and can thus tailor their own build to their wants, skill levels, and budget. As always, Well done!

Hello Steve, this is pure fun to watch. Clean modelling and painting job. I am really looking forward to the brassin engine build, as I have to do one for my 1/32 Eduard Bf 109 E3.

Another great video Steve … it will be interesting to see the difference between the Tamiya & Brassin versions of the Merlin Engine. Your painting guides are very detailed and instructive. Thank you for sharing your wonderful skills with us

Good evening Steve, I believe that tamiya was possibly giving the modeller a choice between a packard merlin or a r.r. merlin. The pictures of the difference between the 2 was the supercharger which had a larger in cooler on the packard along with a different intake . Anyway it may a possibility . Forever in His service
@TheModelShed Жыл бұрын
The long intake is for the tropical filter Alex - the option in the kit which uses this intake is an Australian machine operating in the far East

From memory, one pair of sprue dies run to 25,000 to 50,000 for non-slide moulding. The plastic sprues are cheap compared to the moulds needed to make them.
@andrewgillis30732 жыл бұрын
This is true not just for plastic model sprues . The companies need to divide the cost of tooling over the amount of the product they think will sell. So if a new model comes out every year, they will cost more than an item made for many years. It also explains why model companies will include multiple sprues even though just a few parts are repeated. Any other modelers have a stash of leftover parts?

I believe Airfix 1:24 Spitfire has the Rolls Royce molded onto the engine.

possibly so I don’t know William - it’s likely a licensing issue rather than one manufacturer being more accurate than another.

@@TheModelShed I've been watching all your videos for the Mosquito, the Bismarck, the BF109, and the F-35 while I build Lego. I love the work you do and the detail and information you've given. Ive been battling cancer since Oct and haven't been able to work so I have a bunch of time everyday to watch. Thank you for what you do.

Was just finishing up watching the first version of this video (seemed fine to me) but just wanted to say lovely clean work on this first engine! I have the brassin engine set myself so I’m keen to see the comparison between the two in the next episode.

Thanks Will the previous upload only had sound on one channel so this fixes that. There’s lots to do in the Brassin engines as you’ll appreciate so I’m expecting them to take a while…..

The rolls royce trade mark problem goes back to the mid 70s when that bloke built a 6 wheel corniche with a spitfire engine in it and a normal rolls grille.which he was forced to scrap after rolls took him to court. The car was called The Beast.

I used Eureka brand wire sets for the Brassin engine kit line callouts as well as solder wire and thread to complete what the aircraft would have to function. Built with the landing gear as a stand alone model it was a great reference to add more details to the Tamiya kit. The plain rocker covers without the Rolls Royce badge typically would mean it is a U.S. Packard built engine. The Canadian Mosquito I chose to depict used Packard Merlin, 1,620 HP, 225s. With the Mosquito posed in flight the stand alone Brassin engine can be viewed instead of having to remove the covers on the Mosquito model every time. If anyone is interested I have posted new images of the Brassin engine and other builds on my w/site, chopperworks in Burlington Ontario, Canada, at the bottom of the 'DESIGN' page. As for deciding if the Brassin upgrade is worth getting, consider the new 1/24 Airfix Mk IX Spitfire when it is released as a alternative for super detailing a Merlin engine. My guess is Airfix will follow that with a new 1/24 P-51D. As always, great video.

Cheers John you’ve given me an idea about what to do with the port Brassin engine…….
@CAPNMAC822 жыл бұрын
Shinketsu Tamiya is large enough that Rolls Royce Holdings, Ltd.'s lawyers would likely come pursue for royalty payments for use of its Trademarks. Brassin may be small enough (or brash enough; or feels enough protected by the laws of Czechia) to just use the logo. Hard to say.

Would fitting the Mosquito with Roll Royce Griffin Engines made it a faster plane.
@TheModelShed2 жыл бұрын
Maybe so Richard but the Griffon was heavier and bigger than the Merlin so it would have taken quite a bit of redesign of the cowlings and ancillaries to install it in the mosquito. As far as I know it was never considered.

I think you are right not to make your models too dirty. Mosquitos were different from other aircraft in the fact they did last longer than a lot of WWII aircraft, which had a average life of around 30 hours. I was abusively informed that there are many photos of badly weathered aircraft but many of these photos are of old obsolite planes cos if you think about it the RAF and I guess the Germans thought similar why would you release photos of their latest developments, and its fighting aircraft people are trying to model not the old wrecks that the photographers got access too.
@TheModelShed2 жыл бұрын
I’ve never been into heavy weathering on my models Laurie. it can easily look very overdone with a heavy hand.

I've notice of late, in online fora, rather some fervent debate on having model engines displayed in kits. This--to me-is very much a rivet-counter argument where the claim that the engines have to be smaller due to the thickness of the plastic versus the prototype sheetmetal. Tempest in a teapot for my 2¢
@TheModelShed2 жыл бұрын
Agree with that Mac. in this case I fancied a go at the Brassin engine but in all honesty the Tamiya items are damned good and will satisfy most.
