I built the Tamiya 'A' version earlier this year; it was a joy to build! Never had a kit before in over 50 years, that just went to together so perfectly! 👍 I did mine in the RAF Lakenheath markings (aftermarket). I'm going to HAVE to get this new 'B' version now; I'm glad that RAF schemes are included here.... This is even more stunning looking than the 'A' and will do it in vertical landing mode. Great in-depth review Peter; thank you.... 😊 Have a lovely Christmas, and best wishes for the New Year 👍

The engineering of the Tamiya F-35A & B kits are _almost_ catching up with Bandai engineering and fit. They have taken a leaf out of Bandai's book, so much to the better. If only all kits could be engineered that well? Airfix, are you watching? FYI: *DO* *NOT* weather these aircraft - they are kept meticulously clean!
@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab10 ай бұрын
Agree with you, though I understand the Top surface RAM tape goes a sort of slightly yellowy gold over time if on carriers.
@NPractitioner10 ай бұрын
You need to keep the weathering subtle I have found, it is needed just to break up the shape a wee bit; especially if without RAM tape. but you are right definitely not Tomcat style weathering!

hah.. you are definitely a Tamiya Fan, but I am going to have to say I can't disagree with you on the in-box view of this one. I have been on the fence for the F-35, and it's ONLY the 35-B that had any interest at all for the STOL capability. The way this looks.. oof..looks like I'm going to have to put that on the list to give a shot at. Thanks for the view.. Nice.

What I really want is for Tamiya to do a 1/32nd kit at the cureent standars of tooling. Can you imagine? Regarding Trumpeters version. Maybe its a good thing that they got it so wrong. The kit is probably not weight on wheels because it is really designed to be shown on the stand in the air - hence there would be no weight on wheels. They'd need to include two sets of wheels. The kit should be marked down because it includes parts for the open canopy, but not the wheels on the ground. If the left the open canopy option out and no weight on wheels then it there'd be no justification for marking down. But since, they gone halfway by adding both open and closed canopys, but leaving out the weight on wheels option needed to make the open canopy really useful, then IMO they should lose a mark. Can't have Tamiya getting complacent - esepcially with the F-35 series of kits which will be analogous to their F-16 kits for the last 40+ years. The F-16 kits are important because the F1-16 was the most widely exported fighter for "free world" and the F-35 is esentially it's replacment. As such we've seen a lot of F-16 kits and I think we can expect to see a lot of F-35 kits. It will be interesting to see if the F-35 is as long lived - it's harder to add capabolity and payload to an F-35 without reducing it's stealth.

Tamiya is making the best F-35 kit on 1/48 and 1/72 scale while trumpeter dominates 1/32 scale.

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab yes but what's the point of having this Tamiya kit that can be that open if this is to make it in flight full stealth and hide all these good features? I saw just days ago an Airfix video with the Lancaster Dambuster and the F35 in flight with the Dark Green and Dark Earth camo. I was telling myself that this camo would be a tolerable alternative for a plane that basically noone like. The full deployed Tamiya's is a tremendous kit that in itself is a marvel and honestly I'd like one day to give it a try. It won't be for the F35, but for Tamiya's kit.

Put on F35 grey lump next to my Vietnam camo'd MiG 17 or my French Mirage 3 with the silver and red colour combo that the French did in the early days of their Mirage service and there is simply no comparison .. the older aircraft have far more character and visual appeal Stealth/modern stuff is so boring now ...
