As a former Navy F-14 mechanic I can't lie, you putting that VMF 115 decal next to the Navy decal drove my OCD nuts. VMF stands for "(V) Fixed Wing, (M) Marine, (F)Fighter Squadron. Nice build but painful to a former Navy mech.
@rvillgaming630623 сағат бұрын
Yeah that irked me too. Also my uncle was an aircraft mechanic and worked on F-14s too! He now works on F-18s at NAS Fallon. Was the Tomcat a maintenance nightmare like I hear about?
@howardelzey276019 сағат бұрын
@@rvillgaming6306 yes it took about 40 maintenance hours for every hour it flew when I was working on them in the early 1990s. I worked on "A" models I heard the "D" models were a little better. My squadron had 12 aircraft most of the time. and we struggled to have 5 of them ready to fly each day. We always had at least 3 of them that were torn completely apart in the hanger. Those were "hanger queens". We stripped parts off of them to keep the others flying. If we had a deployment coming up or things got slow we had to put the queens back together and that was really a nightmare. I literally got out of the Navy because they were going to send me to another Tomcat squadron if I reenlisted so I said no thanks and got out. It was the best thing I could have done though, I ended up going to flight school and became a commercial pilot.

Very nice indeed. Built and painted just for fun. That's how I make my models, just how I want them to be. Accuracy - mmm mostly, sort of. Correct paint and decals - urr sometimes. Impressive to other modellers - I really don't care. Most importantly - do I like it? That's mostly yes but the bones of a few dramatic failures can still be found at the end of my garden having suffered terminal air rifle damage. Thanks for sharing this with us, my regards...

@@ugurkenel No, I have no connection with Arma Hobby, just thought I should mention them. It's new company so their model range is not huge, but I like their model a lot. Couple years back on my return to the hobby, PZL P7a released by Arma Hobby was my first purchase. Of course I lost most of the details under too heavy coats of paint, but details and fit were great! Live this build few questions what was the prepared wash you used? How do you thin your vellejo air paint’s because I always get dry tip and what do you use to hold your gear doors on?
@ugurkenel25 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching it. - Wash: Vallejo Dark gray, at least 1/10 wash/water ration. It needs 2-3 layer application. - How i use Vallojo acrylics. I use 0.5 tip airbrush first, I dilute it as at least 50/50 or 40/60 with water, too thin to prevent blokage. - Gear doors? I always use CA glue (Super Glue), short drying time and very strong attachment. Cheers 👍🏻
@austinlangley453925 күн бұрын
@@ugurkenelthanks for the info i will try that stuff out. You never showed you removing the wash so you remove it or just brush and dab it on and that’s the finished result. And the gear doors I was referring to what’s temporary holding on the gear doors when you paint the fuselage
@ugurkenel25 күн бұрын
Since the wash is so thin, there is usually not much wash left to remove or clean. If there are little excess wash dried on surface, i just paint over them by brush with same fuselage color to delete it. I fix doors to fuselage with a piece of “Tack-It” ( re-usable adhesieve.)

I concur. The Tamiya sea harrier is a terrible build. It was my first kit I got after getting back into the hobby, and it nearly put me off!! I ended up scratch building the details on the seat using everything from cardboard egg boxes for the seat cushions, shaped blobs of miliput for the shoulder pads, thick tinfoil for the belts and thin copper wire for the ejection handles. I also had a lot of filling to do as well. I suppose in one way all of these shortcomings taught me some skills that I'd need on other builds. I'm currently using it as a paint mule to practice different effects and mixtures of paints to see if they're going to be alright for other models. I may take pity on it one day and finish it in the Falklands War colours and decals.
