I love the dt02 gearbox. One of the best Tamiya ever made. Probably won’t be for Christmas, but I will get one of these

I just built mine over the last couple of nights and it was an incredibly refreshing build! So many clever design choices to fit the new gearbox/rear suspension and front suspension/bellcrank steering to the old Hornet chassis. I loved that in one step you were utilizing build methods from the 1980s and in the next you're building a ball-bearing supported bellcrank steering rack... It was a great build! I built mine as a Grasshopper II EVO. I bought another Grasshopper II kit when I ordered mine from AMain (got a sweet Black Friday deal so I couldn't help myself!) and the Grasshopper II body fits great! You need to trim around the front shock holes on the body, or remove the shock tower reinforcements (I'm not sure they're going to do any good anyway..) and use the front body post relocation piece from the Grasshopper kit but then the body falls right on and works great! Grasshopper II's front wheels fit perfectly and the rear wheels need to use the Grasshopper II's wheel adapters but otherwise fit perfectly as well. Grasshopper II EVO!

Very cool!! Yes I was saying to myself when building it... I can't imagine who the hell researched and made all these mods and inventions to make the old chassis and new stuff all work together with it? Thanks for watching.

TOTAL BEAUTY!!! This won't ever be competitive.... but Tamiya took the classic Hornet, and made it GOOD! Especially the bellcrank steering, which could be added to any Hopper!! Can't wait till mine arrives.

Nice building video Steve. I like the adaptatinon of the gear box to the old cjassis. Looks very durable. My biggest complain're theses rims. They really should have putted in some evolutionary one-piece-rims into the kit😂
@ShenRC
@ShenRC Ай бұрын
I think they left the stock wheels and tires because they wanted it to be like a classic hornet first priority, They do include rear adaptors to fit new buggy style wheels on also in the kit which was nice! Thanks 👍

A guy on Tamiya club built one as a Grasshopper EVO and I built one as a Grasshopper II EVO. I also put the Super Hornet body on it (Super Hornet EVO!) but my Super Hornet is a shelf queen so that body is staying there. Haha. Too rare and hard to get these days!

I'm glad you noticed that it was heavier than the original. It is, by quite a bit. Especially in the back. Which is probably what allows it to jump so well and gives it the understeer its known for which is a lot of fun, but mine needed a lot of preload in the back shocks. The manual shows no preload spacers used but the promotional material shows 3 'thick' preload spacers in each shock for a total of 6 while the kit only includes 4. I think it needs slightly stiffer springs in the rear but I'm going to drive the heck out of it with the stock springs and lots of preload spacers.
@ShenRC
@ShenRC Ай бұрын
Yeah I think it is heavier in the back too! A lot more weight to put down on the rear wheels! Yep more shock spacers are needed. Thanks for sharing. 👍

You can put a limiting tube for the rear shocks. You can cut the tube to the length you want

Looks cool. I am pretty sure they made a new body for it to accommodate everything properly. Might just be new cut lines or something.

Thanks, Yeah the back rear fender had to be cut to clear the DT02 gearbox ware the side gear cover goes on.

I thought the wheelbase looked longer in the photos. Guess it's just the gear box. looking forward to seeing how it runs. I'm trying to keep my R/C collection small, still trying to figure out what tamiya buggy I want. This mixes old and new so might be a good one.

@@ShenRCIt's on the top of the list of buggies I am looking at. My savings is still recovering from my super clod buster so will be awhile lol I was trying to avoid one, but monster trucks are my favorite and I had to have one.

I think the way the manual tells you to build the front shocks, makes em too long for the springs. Like when they extend all the way, the spring perch can fall right out. Step 29 says to use part V11 , it's a small spacer. I instead used part V2, the longer spacer, in its place and the front shocks are perfect. Kinda wish I had used the 2 hole pistons in the rear, cause yeah, it's pretty soft.
@ShenRC
@ShenRC Ай бұрын
Hi they are not to long you need to use the clip spacer collars to take up the space of the spring to the the top of the shock body, I have 1 large spacer on my front and it's fine my spring is a little lose but I can put another clip and make it fit perfect, I have no problems with mine at all. If you don't want your shock shafts extending out of the shocks far you can put a spacer on the shock shaft under the shock piston and this won't let the shock pull all the way out of the shock making it shorter. Hope this helps.
@Hillbillypunk
@Hillbillypunk Ай бұрын
@@ShenRC that's what I did the first time, used the big spacer above the spring and it held fine. Using the big spacer on the bottom, with no clip up top, basically gave me the same effect lol I think I will try the spacer inside the shock, some time later cause for now I wanna drive this bad boy!
@Hillbillypunk
@Hillbillypunk Ай бұрын
@@ShenRCI put the larger shaft spacer under the piston, and the shocks are perfect. No preload clips needed, the front end isn't jacked all the way up, and now the steering works way better.

They have taken a simple Hornet and made it very complex. You are right it looks weird and I wonder if they will do this to the Lunchbox next, the parts should be a straight swap well almost. It would need different mounts for the gearbox. You will have to do a full compare to the old Hornet once done, speed and handling comparison.
@ShenRC
@ShenRC Ай бұрын
Don't know if they will do a lunch box? This is going to be much better than a normal hornet I can tell already. Thanks

It does have some weird quirks! But I think it will drive great just from the little test drive I did at the end! Thanks for watching.
